Did you know that there is a folk club again at the Lock pub, in Wolverley near Kidderminster?
It is run on Monday nights from 8:30ish by Ken.
I am told that there used to be one here 20 years ago, but I am a 21st century folkie and know nothing about the old club.
Do you have any memories or photos of this club that you could share here?
Lionel and Geoff have started going again..
I would be interested hear your memories.
Cheers
Alison

Great room fantastic Guest when I went Gordon Tyrral (That's a fiver Gordon)! One of the floor singers and regulars was Grant Banham and what a great name for a Folk Club The Lock Stock and Barrel Folk Club. In those day's I was the only person in Leeds with a car so I used to get all over The Bell and Pump and the Woodman are just two that stand out.

cresby.com (choose W Mids) is your best source of information on the area (if the datestamp looks old - ring the pub). Bell and Pump finished 15 years ago. Katie Fitzgeralds is THE music pub in the area. Plough Wollaston Tues and Longlands Tavern Thurs (all Stourbridge). If anyone knows the current status of session at "the Station" Kidderminster I would be greatful. Post here.

Bridgnorth have things if that is close enough.

I used to go there when Grant Baynham was a regular floor singer ( 1978 - 79ish) I think Moss Maurice used to run it.

Sorry for spelling your name wrong Grant. It was in the Eighies or early Ninties when I went. Grant seemed to have fallen fowl of the BBC. I did a package on him for the regional folk program which was never broadcast. I don't realy know if it was because of Grant or the funny song he sang into my roving mike as the contents was about the Arabs. We were having trouble with Iran at the time. It was a great night at the Lock Stock and Barrel (you still owe me a £5 Gordon) or did they call it the Lock Inn Folk Club?

Well I gess the good old day's were just crap for some! Hey I only went to the Lock Inn once so perhaps it was just the one great night in it's History. But I realy can't see the point of knocking something that happened Twenty Plus Years ago! It was a good room it was full the Beer was good and the atmospher was warm and welcoming.

I am glad to hear that Good Soldier Schweik Club is still going from Strength to Strength. Don't forget to leave details of where and when cos we love promoting folk music on the Mudcat.

my idea of a good folk club,is one that is built on a good nucleus of singers and musicians ,good residents, that can give an evening of song or music without necessarily having to book an artist every week.
the folk club that used to be in Kidderminster [imo] did not fall into that category.
I wish the new folk club well,it has no connection with the old club, and hopefully will be more successful.
I can even remember the previous organisers name, Maurice Hooper.

So just where is your Folk Club Good Soldier Schweik? What night did you say it was on?

I might just call in one of those nights as it's just down the road from me in Leeds.

Used to go to the Lock in the late 70s. Good club with some talented floor singers, good guests, and one particularly annoying heckler.

I had no problems with the audience, but I did have a major problem with the organisers.
in fact there was another folk club organiser from the battle of worcester folk club[a club I played several times] who witnessed my problem.
in the end I got my money, but only becaus i had a a musicians contract, three of the most unpleasant organisers,I have ever come across.
the booking had originally made through Maurice Hooper, on the stength of an lp I sent him.
I had driven four hours to get to the gig,and arrived at 8 40pm,I think the organisers had thought I wasnt coming, panicked and asked GrantBaynham to do the gig.
as I say I have an independent witness to all this and their behaviour.
however I wish the new organisers every success.

Is the organiser Ken Swannell ????

Last I heard about the Station sessions was that the landlord from a few years ago had died, his daughter took over temporarily - but had to sell the pub, and the new lot stopped all sessions.

GUEST,Mr Red: "Katie Fitzgeralds is THE music pub in the area."

Not if you want to listen to anything that could even loosely be labelled 'folk'. I think it may have had some designs in the folk direction when it first opened, but those aspirations (if they ever existed) are long gone.

Katie Fitzgeralds.
It has been a few years since I contacted the Irish sessionists. I worked with a guy who played there about 18 months ago. Their music was folkie enough (I could have danced their polkas, stepped their hornpipes) but they sacked the guitarist, the melodeon and Violinist (he fiddled well enough) and that could only leave two drums! It ain't folkie now!
Dunno about the pub, the landlord is a musician apparently.

Station - I guess it should be deleted from the records.

And as a floor singer I never had any problem with the Lock Stock & Barrel, Moss Hooper seemed to prefer not to be on stage, I always found him very personable. The fore-runner club was called the Cut Above. Organisers at the Battle of Worcester were Steve Bently & Gus Tysoe.

Not a lot of people know that.

I used to attend the Cut Above club and cant see how Good Soldier Schweik can make the comment "bad club" He is talking of a personal problem he had not the club itself,
I found the club to be friendly, full, entertaining with a good variety of regulars and floor singers, and the (Heckler)
I think was Tony, was loud but quick witted and usually funny

Jenny
I went to the Cut Above folk club at the Lock Inn in the late 70s. Always went with a group of friends and enjoyed the singing, the banter and the wine.
If it's anything like as enjoyable as it was years ago I'm going back soon. Does Lionel still sing Ferryman??
