Subject: Coal Mining Songs
From: GUEST
Date: 16 Jan 10 - 12:16 PM

I'm a collector of coal mining songs. I have versions of a few hundred different songs, but I'm always learning of songs that I had never heard of before. For instance, I recently learned of "Anthony Riley" (by Ivan Fryman), as well as "Coal Miner's Blues" by Jim Owen (not the same classic "Coal Miner's Blues" that A.P. Carter wrote).
Because I know there are many coal mining songs out there that I've never heard of, please tell me any that you know of, particularly lesser known songs. I'm interested not just in American songs, but British or any others.
There's no need to list classics such as "Dark As A Dungeon", "Sixteen Tons", "Nine Pound Hammer", "Coal Tattoo", "West Virginia Mine Disaster", "Blackleg Miner", etc.
    Thanks so much!

See if you can find ' 100 Songs of Toil,' edited by Karl Dallas, a whole section on mining songs and A L Lloyds ' Come All Ye Bold Miners ' a book of mining songs, both all British.

Easily the best hard copy source of mining songs from Britain ia A.L. Lloyd's Come All Ye Bold Miners. Lawrence and Wishart 1978. It's almost certainly out of print but well worth hunting down. Make sure you get the second edition, which is a much expanded version of the first, which originally came out in 1952.

Not all songs that mention "coal" are about mining it - ie "coal black hair" and coal in the fire, but certainly check out those songs in the Digital Tradition here. You can also search for "@mining" to see the songs that have that keyword (not all are COAL mining, but most are) to get another (overlapping) long list of songs.

There are several coal mining songs on British Columbian singer-songwriter Gordon Carter's CD "Diary Of A Coal Town". A Pit Pony's Tale appears on this CD as well as on his other record "Rivers and Roads".

I played a song called "Pneumoconiosis Blues" when I DJ'd in New Zealand.

Can't see referrences to it on the Web. It was on an American LP of Black Blues artists. Can't remember the label.

I thought I had posted about it years ago but even the 'Cat can't remember it.

("Miner's Lung" since you ask)

Just remembered a reasonably new one - Sting's 'We work the black seam' - I think that is what it is called anyway. Not strictly about coal mining but the use of neuclear power vs coal. Not sure which one wins out but it is a pretty good song.

I'd go along with Joe G's earlier recommendation (Jez Lowe & Ed Pickford). There's a terrific version of Ed's "Strange Lover Is The Coalmine" on Tom McConville's 2008 album Tommy on Song.

My own songs - "Orgreave" (mentioned earlier by Ray Padgett and recorded by him for Yorkshire Garland) and "Pitworld" - can be heard on

The Pit Pony Sanctuary Pontypridd are working on some video shorts on some of the small private mines & the Ponies they used. One is up on You tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=042xrlgDiIg   With the soundtrack of a Choir singing Myfanwy. It would be nice to have a public domain track of someone singing about mines & ponies on the next one. Any Ideas?

We are a small Charity. We have a petition running on a Government website to "STOP THE USE OF PIT PONIES UNDERGROUND". Would you please sign the petition and help us tell others. You will find the petition at www.visitpitponies.co.uk/petition Perhaps you could cut & Paste this email into your system and send it to all the e-mail addresses on your system for us. Thank you for helping us help them.

I was just reading somewhere...I think in an actual book..about a Polish person in PA USA who wrote mining songs. He was not an actual miner but more of a sorter or screener up top.

I would love someone to write about the Balmaidens? of Cornwall.

It would also be nice to collect in other languages...Welsh of course, Italian, Polish, Ukraine..mg

From: Rank

Old King Coal by John Kirkpatrick

Coorie Doon by Matt Mcginn

Song of the Pit by Jack Coterell and recorded by Muckram Wakes on Warbles Banbles and Reeds. Written to raise funds during the miners' strike.

Grandad and the Pit by Martin Nesbitt of Saltburn. May not be to everybody's taste, but I like it.

GRANDDAD AND THE PIT
Martin Nesbitt

Granddad, won't you tell us,
Now that you're old and grey,
Tell us where you used to work,
Back in the olden days?
And granddad, I've often wondered,
Though I've never asked before,
Why do you lay in bed all day,
And you don't work no more?

Lass, I were a miner,
And I worked in a place called a pit.
A pit is a dark and dirty hole,
And I worked in the bottom of it, digging out coal.
They burn coal on fires, bonny lass,
To keep folks warm from the cold,
And I toiled down that pit all my working days,
Till I lost my job, when I got too old.

Granddad, won't you tell us,
Now that you're old and grey,
Tell us why you cough so much,
All the night and day?
And granddad, I've often wondered,
Why do you wear that mask,
What could have made your lungs so ill?
Was it coal dust from the past?

Lass, I were a miner,
And I worked in a place called a pit.
A pit is a dark and dirty hole,
And I worked in the bottom of it, digging out coal.
They burn coal on fires, bonny lass,
To keep folks warm from the cold,
And I toiled down that pit all my working days,
Till I lost my job, when I got too old.

Granddad, won't you tell us,
Now that you're old and grey,
Why did the doctor say to mam,
You'll not see another day?
And granddad, I'm getting worried,
You're looking awful pale,
What could have made you so ill?
Oh, you look so weak and frail.

Lass, I were a miner,
And I worked in a place called a pit.
A pit is a dark and dirty hole,
And I worked in the bottom of it, digging out coal.
They burn coal on fires, bonny lass,
To keep folks warm from the cold,
And I toiled down that pit all my working days,
Till I lost my job, when I got too ……..

Granddad. Granddad. Granddad.

I sing "i work in the Mines"-- from the anthracite region around Scranton. It's on my Folk-Legacy cd, "American Primitive." It comes from the singing of "Giant" O'Neill. It expresses some of the pride miners have about their work as well as the difficulty.

I am looking for the lyrics to "That 25 Cents You Paid" by Sarah Gunning, "Which Side Are You On?" by Florence Reece, and "Coal Mining Women" by Hazel Dickens -- and I need them as they are on the CD "Coal Mining Women." I've found a number of versions on the web but can't find any that are exactly like the recording and there are parts I can't quite catch when transcribing the words.

Anyone have any help?

Thanks!

Don't forget "New York Mining Disaster 1941" by The Bee Gees. If you don't think this is valid, ask Martin Carthy why he recorded a version.

There are other mining songs from non-western countries - an excellent South African one by Hugh Masakela about gold mine workers, for example.
