Subject: RE: Coal Mining Songs From: mg Date: 18 Jan 10 - 03:44 PM I was just reading somewhere...I think in an actual book..about a Polish person in PA USA who wrote mining songs. He was not an actual miner but more of a sorter or screener up top. I would love someone to write about the Balmaidens? of Cornwall. It would also be nice to collect in other languages...Welsh of course, Italian, Polish, Ukraine..mg |
Subject: RE: Coal Mining Songs From: GUEST,Roy Peckham Date: 18 Jan 10 - 02:29 PM The Pit Pony Sanctuary Pontypridd are working on some video shorts on some of the small private mines & the Ponies they used. One is up on You tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=042xrlgDiIg With the soundtrack of a Choir singing Myfanwy. It would be nice to have a public domain track of someone singing about mines & ponies on the next one. Any Ideas? We are a small Charity. We have a petition running on a Government website to "STOP THE USE OF PIT PONIES UNDERGROUND". Would you please sign the petition and help us tell others. You will find the petition at www.visitpitponies.co.uk/petition Perhaps you could cut & Paste this email into your system and send it to all the e-mail addresses on your system for us. Thank you for helping us help them. |
Subject: RE: Coal Mining Songs From: henryclem Date: 18 Jan 10 - 11:56 AM I'd go along with Joe G's earlier recommendation (Jez Lowe & Ed Pickford). There's a terrific version of Ed's "Strange Lover Is The Coalmine" on Tom McConville's 2008 album Tommy on Song. My own songs - "Orgreave" (mentioned earlier by Ray Padgett and recorded by him for Yorkshire Garland) and "Pitworld" - can be heard on http://myspace.com/henryclements Henry |

Subject: RE: Coal Mining Songs From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 Jan 10 - 08:15 AM Just remembered a reasonably new one - Sting's 'We work the black seam' - I think that is what it is called anyway. Not strictly about coal mining but the use of neuclear power vs coal. Not sure which one wins out but it is a pretty good song. DeG |

Subject: Coal Mining Songs From: GUEST Date: 16 Jan 10 - 12:16 PM I'm a collector of coal mining songs. I have versions of a few hundred different songs, but I'm always learning of songs that I had never heard of before. For instance, I recently learned of "Anthony Riley" (by Ivan Fryman), as well as "Coal Miner's Blues" by Jim Owen (not the same classic "Coal Miner's Blues" that A.P. Carter wrote). Because I know there are many coal mining songs out there that I've never heard of, please tell me any that you know of, particularly lesser known songs. I'm interested not just in American songs, but British or any others. There's no need to list classics such as "Dark As A Dungeon", "Sixteen Tons", "Nine Pound Hammer", "Coal Tattoo", "West Virginia Mine Disaster", "Blackleg Miner", etc. Thanks so much! |
