Subject: Kendall's song for today
From: GUEST,Kendall
Date: 17 Jan 10 - 07:30 AM

Ever since I was a boy I wake every morning with a song or a tune in my head. Today it's THE GANGSTER'S WARNING. My Mother taught it to me when I was about 10 or so.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I was brought up by kind and good parents,
My life was their pride and their joy,
But I took up drinking for pass time,
This life got the best of their boy,
Some pals took me out on a robbery,
Just once I thought would be fun,
But one crime led to another,
Until it led to the use of a gun.

I wish I had listened to Mother,
She said there would be days like this,
I've lost all my true friends and sweethearts,
No more will I know love's sweet bliss,

It seems there's no hope for a gangster,
A true one will never be found,
Wherever they go they are hunted,
Like a fox being chased by a hound,
I'm leaving a trail that is crooked,
My foes lurk behind every bend,
I know some day they will get me,
And I dread to think of the end.
Young men stay away from bad company,
That's how I started in wrong,
So if your pals try to tempt you,
Remember the words of this song.

This doesn't seem to scan very well, maybe I'm forgetting a verse. It's been about 65 years.

Kendall-

Sounds like an update of the old "Boston Burglar," one of my favorite 19th century songs. Neat!

I heard Boston Burglar too

Now you who have your freedom
Pray keep it if you can
And don't go round the streets at night
And break the laws of man
For if you do
You'll surely rue
Behind these bars like me
I'm serving the sum of 21 years
In the penitentiary.

Sandy said he had never heard my version but it is what I got from my Dad. I was supposed to record it for him but never did. Too late now.

I am still battling "Put the lime in the coconut and drink it down." ARGHHHHH!

Sins, the verse you posted from "Boston Burglar" is almost identical to the last verse of "Louisville Burglar," as sung by the New Lost City Ramblers on their "Volume 2" album. They attribute the song to a group called the Hickory Nuts.

Probably an example of what we used to call "zipper verses."

Um -- "lime in the coconut"?? Where did that come from? Sounds dreadful...

lime in the coconut lyrics-a song by Harry Nilsson

(reminds me of thai soup that has cocoanut milk, lime leaves
lemon grass)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNcx59q05_I&feature=related

Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had another one, she paid it for a lime.
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, she called the doctor, woke him up,
And said, "Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?"
"Now let me get this straight ",
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, you called your doctor, woke him up,
And say, 'Doctor, ain't there nothing I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, dooooctor, to relieve this belly ache?'
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both together,
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better,
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning
Wouh wouh wouh wouh wouh
Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had another one, she paid it for a lime.
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up,
She put the lime in the coconut, she called the doctor, woke him up,
Say "Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say Doctor! let me get this straight".
You put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
You put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
You put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
Put the lime in the coconut, you such a silly woman!,
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both together,
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better.
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both down
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning
Woo Woo, ain't there nothin' you can take, I say
Woo Woo, to relieve my belly ache,
You say woo woo ain't there nothin' I can take, I say
Woo woo, to relieve your belly ache,
You say yah yah, ain't there nothin' I can take, I say
Waah waah, to relieve this belly ache,
I say doctor!, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say doctor!, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say doctor!, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say Doctor!, you such a silly woman!,
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both together,
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better,
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the moooooorning,
Yes, you call me in the morning,
If you call me in the morning, then

Hmmm; that Gene Audry guy sounds a lot like a very young Gene Autry : )    I had heard that Gene started out trying to be Jimmy Rogers, but I hadn't heard anything that sounded so much so before. That has to be a very early recording.

Open Mike, thanks for the link to the youtube video. I enjoyed it.

Gentlemen: please note that Open Mike's link includes beautiful dancing girls. Which do you really want to start your day, gangsters complaining about being in stir, or beautiful girls doing the hula?

I'm just asking.

The song reminds me just a bit of Mother the Queen of My Heart by Jimmie Rodgers. In the 30's the rescue and redemption theme was pretty popular.

Great song Kendall.

Mt Radio wakes me up so I get some very odd ones. This morning was Lord Rockingham's eleven 'There's a moose aloose aboot this hoose'. Bit of a lively start I'll tell yer!
