June Carter Cash's first husband. Some good stuff for sure, including some old Bob Wills (Deep Water) and some fun honky-tonk, e.g. " Hey Joe".

I was sure relieved to find that the i-Tunes version of "If Teardrops Were Pennies and Heartaches Were Gold" was the "clean" version.   Hard to imagine what the x-rated version would be.

It's good we'll always have his records.

RIP

Carl Smith was one of my favorites from the 1950s and was enjoyed again during the Classic Country reruns on TV where he frequently appeared. In one routine Minnie Pearl flirted continuously with Smith. He was generally unresponsive. Finally, she asked, "You've seen girls uglier than me haven't you?" Smith said nothing. After a few moments she started to repeat the question. Smith replied, "Shush, I heard you. I'm trying to think".

At least I can still listen to "This Orchid Means Goodbye", "I Overlooked and Orchid", "Loose Talk", and "Did We Have to Come this far to Say Goodbye" and countless others. Thanks, Carl, for some great memories.

A lot of great country singers recorded some clunkers once in a while. Carl Smith was one of the few whose recordings were consistently good, In my opinion. Rest In Peace.

One of the great singers who did not get the recognition he deserved. Thanks for the music!

Going over some of the songs he did were favorites of mine to learn on the guitar in my youth.
Sympathies to his family and friends.
Adrien

Agreed Adrien. Although the name Carl Smith does not seem to stimulate much interest now at one time he was one of the major forces in country music selling records, packing seats for live performances, and generating listeners on the radio as well as heading Cedarwood, a major publisher of the 50s and 60s. Whether Carl could not or would not change his style to keep pace with the emerging country politan sounds is for the real scholars to debate, but when I started to rebuild by music collection in these later years, Smith was one of the first names to come to mind and I was not disappointed when I began to play his music again, either in his voice or choice of songs. Country legend is certainly an appropriate term for Carl Smith.
