Subject: RE: Acapella ideas for a wedding march!? From: Micca Date: 22 Jan 10 - 06:51 AM Would this be a good time to point out that one of the 2 best known(aand most used) Wedding Marches, The Wagner one from Lohengrin, that is the "Here comes the Bride" one, is actually done acapella (without ANY orchestral accompaniment) in the opera? so a small chorus of voices might be able to carry it off? |
Subject: RE: Acapella ideas for a wedding march!? From: Marje Date: 22 Jan 10 - 05:03 AM I don't see why the lack of power should prevent instrumental music at all. Can't you find someone who plays the fiddle, or pipes, or flute, or (well why not?) even accordion? Or some combination of these? I think a tune (with no words) would be better for a processional march, leaving the song idea until later in the ceremony. That gives you a lot more scope, as all sorts of tunes are powerful and stirring enough to serve the purpose, regardless of their titles. A single piper would provide a dramatic start to the occasion. At our daughter's wedding, her cousin and uncle sang "One hand, one heart" from West Side Story, with guitar accompaniment. I think it's one of the simplest, loveliest wedding songs there is. But maybe not suitable for a march, better for a more reflective moment later in the proceedings. Marje |

Subject: RE: Acapella ideas for a wedding march!? From: MGM·Lion Date: 21 Jan 10 - 04:32 AM For the record, I was once musical director ·+· playing Amiens who gets to sing most of the songs in a 1970 open-air As You Like It in Cambridge. The theme was of a sort of hippy-paradise in the forest where they sang folk - so I set e.g. Under The Greenwood Tree to tune of The Gentleman Soldier &c. For Hymen's Wedding Hymn in the last scene {"Wedding is Great Juno's Crown' V iv 140}, sung chorally by all the 'courtiers', I used Kelvingrove ["The Shearing's No' for You" ], which all said fitted it beautifully. So I offer it as a humble suggestion - no royalties expected. The name 'Hymen' in the song, nowadays having other connotations, could be altered to something like 'Wedlock' perhaps. |

Subject: RE: Acapella ideas for a wedding march!? From: open mike Date: 20 Jan 10 - 02:52 PM Kate Wolf's Give Yourself to Love but perhaps you could have instruments... just no amplification...perhaps ones with some volume...such as bagpipes, nyckelharp, or some resonator type this would carry better than a voice.. will you plan to have multiple singers? a pretty waltz is Give Me Your Hand (i do not know of lyrics for this--i am thinking instrumental here) or as mentioned above, Mairi's Wedding |
Subject: RE: Acapella ideas for a wedding march!? From: Paul Burke Date: 20 Jan 10 - 02:39 PM Perhaps "Il Ne L'Aura Pas" as performed by the City Waites: though as this is supposedly commenting on the bride's state, perhaps it's not quite appropriate. |
Subject: RE: Acapella ideas for a wedding march!? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 20 Jan 10 - 02:20 PM 3 ideas: Use the Dutch hymn "We gather together," changing some words to reflect that this is a wedding. Use "Let all things now living," which uses the joyful tune "Ash Grove," and do the same. 'Be thou my vision.' Skip verse 3. |
Subject: RE: Acapella ideas for a wedding march!? From: John MacKenzie Date: 20 Jan 10 - 02:03 PM Love Is The Sweetest Thing Ray Noble "Say It With Music" Love is the sweetest thing What else on earth could ever bring Such happiness to ev'rything As Love's old story. Love is the strangest thing No song of birds upon the wing Shall in our hearts more sweetly sing Than Love's old story. Whatever heart may desire Whatever fate may send This is the tale that never will tire. This is the song without end. Love is the greatest thing The oldest yet, the latest thing I only hope that fate may bring Love's story to you. |
