Subject: RE: What songs on a typical singround night? From: Tootler Date: 29 Aug 11 - 11:13 AM "...can't work out why people get through so little in an evening." It depends on the amount of chat between the songs. I have noticed that in neither folk club I go to regularly do we seem to get round more than twice regardless of how many folk are there. On a week when the turnout is small, there tends to be a lot more chat between the songs so we don't get through so many. It also depends on the MC. Some like to move things along and some are quite happy to let the discussion flow a little. |
Subject: RE: What songs on a typical singround night? From: GUEST Date: 29 Aug 11 - 08:28 AM I'm posting anonymously to spare the blushes of the people involved, and I won't list the songs either, that would be a dead giveaway. But the list is quite varied, including traditional English, Scottish and Irish songs, blues, modern songs, country, instrumentals and recitations. Sounds brilliant. Downside is, with minor variations, it's the same every time. Each to his own, they seem to like it that way, and there are even non- participant supporters who turn up regularly, but I felt like screaming "Change the bloody record!" |

Subject: RE: What songs on a typical singround night? From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Jan 10 - 09:26 PM I attend one monthly song circle where you can expect that most songs are done every two or three months (and almost all are from Rise Up Singing). We sing "Waltzing With Bears" almost every time a certain person is there; and "Today" for another - and you know, that's OK. We sing "Julian of Norwich" (Sydney Carter) whenever there's a thought of snow; and we sing "River" (Bill Staines) and "Goodnight Irene" at closing, almost every month. I go to another singaround where the host uses her Website to post all songs we sing - and we've rarely repeated a song in the two years the circle has been going. Gee, I see we even have a posting for that song circle in the local newspaper. Guess which song circle I like better. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: What songs on a typical singround night? From: Bill D Date: 21 Jan 10 - 07:47 PM adding to above.. "Letter Edged in Black" No, there are no typical singing sessions unless there IS a topic as we do. If it is group of people who know each other well, there are certain songs that may pop up...or be requested. |

Subject: RE: What songs on a typical singround night? From: Tootler Date: 21 Jan 10 - 07:12 PM Is there such a thing as a "typical" singaround night? Singarounds vary widely, some are noticeably oriented toward traditional song with most singers singing unaccompanied while there are others which are more country/pop in content with most singers accompanying themselves, usually on guitar. |

Subject: RE: What songs on a typical singround night? From: Mr Red Date: 21 Jan 10 - 01:11 PM I chose songs that had some relevance for the night. Kiwis in the audience - Tamaranui. Ozzies - South Australia. Canadians - Farewell to Nova Scotia. 11th November - Old Barbed Wire. etc. Otherwise fall back on chorus songs. |
Subject: RE: What songs on a typical singround night? From: Bill D Date: 20 Jan 10 - 10:08 PM hmmm... I didn't keep notes from a couple weeks ago....will try to remember a reasonable list. (We have a monthly topic to stir folks ideas...this month was "Writing and the Written Word: songs about (or merely mentioning) notes, letters, books, sentences ("the judge he passed the sentence and the clerk he wrote it down"), messages, dissertations, etc., etc." I did "Do You Think That I Do Not Know" (from a Henry Lawson poem) and a gospel song about a verse in the Bible..(many of the usual songs involving specific mention of letters were done...(Ambletown...etc.) |
Subject: What songs on a typical singround night? From: Nick Date: 20 Jan 10 - 08:06 PM I did this a long time ago but thought I'd do it again as I can't remember where I posted it last time. Came back from our weekly music gathering (we are not a folk club and I definitely don't think of us as being primarily traditional but see below!) and thought I'd share the list of what we went through tonight. High Barbary A Hundred Years Ago Unknown Country song Fol-de-rol-de-riddle-i (not sure of real name) Thousands or More Tell Me Ma Adieu sweet nancy Country song Close to the Wind Set of three fiddle tunes Love in America Blues in D (for Kate Mcgarrigle) Accordion Tune Second Accordion Tune Mountains of Mourne Set of three fiddle tunes Hole in My Bucket Shepherd Song My Love Has Gone Put Out the Lights Set of Three Fiddle Tunes Cousin Jack Country Song Galway to Graceland Sailors Life Set of three fiddle tunes Unknown drugs song Northern Tide At Seventeen I Can Hew Fathom the Bowl Stormy Winds Do Blow(?) Vincent Bring Us a Barrel Both Sides of the Tweed Three Score and Ten One Starry night Too Long (?) Sisters of Mercy Lord franklyn Big River Hmmm.... more traditional than I thought. Not bad for three hours either - 41 songs and tune sets. I go to places sometimes and can't work out why people get through so little in an evening. It'll be different next week. |
