Subject: Lyr Req: lyrics to 'Muddy River'
From: GUEST,max

This "Muddy River" was popular in the late fifties and early sixties. It had a very simple minor tune, and the only lyrics I remember was from the chorus:
Muddy river, your muddy water, took my baby's life.
(Or words to that effect.)

Google on "your muddy water took my baby's life" turns up any number of direct hits. The title seems to be Moody River, which may have been confusing the issue.

Google Pat Boone Chords or Dic Watson Chords. I got mine from Pat Boone Chords.

This is from a Pat Boone recording. But Doc Watson did it as well.

Starts with a Chorus

MOODY RIVER
Gary D. Bruce

CHORUS: Mo(G)ody River, mo(Em)re deadly, th(G)an the vainest kni(Em)fe.
Mo(G)ody River, your mud(G7)dy water, to(C)ok my baby's li(G)fe. (Em)

VERSE: La(Em)st Saturday ev(B7)ening, ca(Em)me to the old Oak tr(B7)ee.
I(Em)t stands beside the ri(B7)ver, where y(C)ou were to meet m(G)e. (Em)

1. Last Saturday evening, came to the old oak tree.
It stands beside the river, where you were to meet me.

2. On the ground your glove I found with a note addressed to me.
It read, "Dear love, I've done you wrong. Now I must set you free.

3. "No longer can I live with this hurt and this sin.
I just couldn't tell you that guy was just a friend."

CHORUS: Moody River, more deadly, than the vainest knife.
Moody River, your muddy water took my baby's life.

4. I looked into the muddy water, and what could I see?
I saw a lonely, lonely face just looking back at me.

5. Tears in his eyes, and a prayer on his lips,
And the glove of his lost love, at his fingertips. CHORUS

Gary Bruce singing the song that he wrote(Moody River) is a much better version than Pat Boone's version. I remember it well. I just can't find his version anywhere. Back then it was hard to get your song on the airways unless you were already known and Pat Boone was that well known singer who got the air play.

You can hear the original 1961 version at YouTube.

The blurb at YouTube says: "Chase Webster ..., using his real name Gary D. Bruce, first wrote and recorded MOODY RIVER."
