Subject: Tech: Anybody having trouble posting?
From: Joe Offer
Date: 23 Jan 10 - 04:16 PM

A couple of people told me they had trouble posting messages in the Forum this morning. Is this widespread? Has it resolved itself this afternoon?

Yeah, Joe - I had a few Teflon, non-stick messages this morning. Haven't noticed in the past few hours.

Occasional problems with messages that won't post, but not serious.
If I come back later, they usually stick.

I haven't been here much today, but for the last couple of weeks I've several times had to use the "back" button to rescue a post that didn't take and return to Mudcat in a new browser to paste it in.

This is probably a good day to remember to copy your messages before you post, just in case.
  • Highlight all the text of the message by using [CTRL-A]
  • Copy [CTRL-C] the text of your message
  • If your message doesn't post, Paste [CTRL-V] the message a message submission box, and submit again
  • And if THAT doesn't work, Paste [CTRL-V] the message into a word processing file and save it for later
You can sometimes get your message back by using the "Back" button on your browser, but copying in advance is safer.

Joe, Mudcat was screwed up. It was staggering around and then fell over completely. I texted Max and he gave it some coffee and an egg sandwich and it's all better now.

That's what I figured, Jeri - but still it's a good idea to copy long messages before posting - just in case.

I've had trouble scrolling on long threads - just in the past few days.

After scrolling down part way it freezes and you have to wait.

Haven't posted anything today, but yesterday when I hit Submit I got a "query error" and when I tried to refresh the page (to make sure the post hadn't made it so that I wouldn't double post) I got a "Page Not Found" and was unable to open anything at mudcat for about an hour.

Two or three days back I got one "shut down by operator" for an hour or two, and in the last two or three weeks I've hit at least a three or four "site not found" bounces, each lasting an hour more.

In the past, most failures could be reposted immediately; but all of my recent ones have found the site unavailable for some time. I've had to come back later to complete the post.

My most common relay servers are in areas where there's been some pretty horrible weather recently, with both phone and power outages reported, so that might have been a factor(?). I haven't bothered to look at whether any relays have been down though.

John

This morning I couldn't get anything to post and when I checked "Messages since last visit" it appeared no one had for a while. I got an error page, every time which said:

From: Don Firth

Yeah, Joe, I've found it to be a fairly chronic problem—within the last few months and seemingly on the increase, in fact.

I type up a message, preview it so I can see what it looks like, make sure any HTML codes I've used (italics, underlines, etc.) are correct, check for typos and such and make any corrections (often missing a few even then), and then hit "Submit Message." I almost always pull up the thread again to make sure that the message is actually there, and lo! frequently lately, it's not!

If the message is going to be of any length at all (over a sentence or two), I type it out in Microsoft Word, then cut-and-paste it into the message box, then go through the routine above to make sure I haven't missed anything. Fairly often, I have to go back to my Word document and do it again, because the message didn't take. Sometimes even a couple of times on the same message.

What's happening?

Don Firth

Another thing is that the cursor will vanish for several seconds to be replaced by 'beach-ball', which will then disappear & letters one has typed in the interim, before noticing this interruption, will appear separately — quite rapidly, but distinctly one-by-one: an odd, and somewhat frustrating, phenomenon, which I hope I have described with sufficient clarity to be understood.

— Anyone else noticed this particular wrinkle? - which seems to me to have been going on for 3 or 4 days — but hasn't happened while typing this one... {See my 'Sods Law' thread!}

We were having a problem, but I appeared to solve it last night.

It was a space issue. Well, only because I am not as suave as I should be with databases, and/or we're using 10 year old database software. I've fallen a bit behind on the learning curve. Staying up on the upgrades is less a money issue than a time and knowledge commitment. I'd rather have my nose in a Bronson or Grossman book than a Technical Reference.

Why have you merged my query in one about posting?

I'm getting an error message 1/2 to 3/4 of the time when I try to post today (or last night)>

This is my 3rd attempt to post this.

If you read the thread, Paul, it's the same problem, same error message. By the way, this thread was refreshed today and two new ones started for this latest.

It seemed to heal up there for a bit, but within the last few days, it appears to be back. I have to make darn sure I type a post into Word first, then cut and paste it into the message box. Several times within the past few days, I've hit "Submit Message," then opened the thread again and, lo! my post isn't there! It generally takes on the second attempt.

A few nights ago, I tried to access Mudcat fairly late in the evening (maybe ten-ish or so, PST) and got a message telling me that Mudcat had been taken off-line. I presumed that Max or somebody was wielding the wrench and screwdriver. The past couple of nights, I get the same message that RamblinStu posted above at 04 Feb 10 - 10:26 a.m.

I don't think the world is coming to an end, but if there's anything in what I've said that helps with the problem, very good.

Don Firth

Today, not only did I keep getting "error" messages, but one of them was a lie!
So I ended up double posting. Argh!

But it's NOT when I'm trying to post. It's READING messages. So if you want a general problems thread, change the title to match.

Paul, I can see your point. I think the problem was the same but the symptom looked different. I can see why people wouldn't have found this thread if they were searching for 'error', which is undoubtedly why there were new threads.

I changed the thread title, which I hope doesn't piss Joe off(er).

I have found the "CFQUERY" error several times when first opening mudcat, and once or twice in the last month when submitting a post.

I've more often found the "taken offline by operator," and in a couple of cases when I got the query error a retry confirms the "phone off the hook."

Maybe it's just because Max and I (and Don F once) are the only ones awake around 01:00 EST on a fairly regular basis. (22:00 PST would be 01:00 EST.)

I've also found more frequent errors than usual at other sites, e.g. with my email server "dropping the connection" just as it starts to download messages; although it's probably unrelated to mudcat. I blame the general network errors on Twitter, since a billion 25 char messages present a much higher probability of "collisions" than a few million intelligent (200 char?) posts.

I keep getting a long MSQL error message that has IP block checking in there with my IP number.

Am I paranoid or is someone trying to block me out?

That's the message we're getting (if we're getting it). It's the one I've received and the one people have quoted up above.

It's a good day to copy your post to the clipboard before hitting submit.

Last night at about 10:00 p.m. PST (1:00 a.m. EST), once again I got Error 503 - "taken offline by operator."

When I click on the Mudcat bookmark, sits there like it's died for several minutes, then the error message finally appears. Repeated attempts produce the same result.

Don Firth -

Yeah, I saw Max working on it last night too.

(Unless he's just takin' the phone off the hook to take care of some of the family business he neglects so often for us.)
