Melissa, I heard back from Drew and now have a contact at Southwest Missouri State who is involved in the project. Hopefully, I will get my own computer back on Monday and I will pursue this further.

61,000 Ozark fiddle tunes?!
that's quite a few!!

Thanks for the link,
M

(laptops sure do seem to have their buttons in strange places, huh?)

I am at a disadvantage of late floundering around on my wife's laptop while my computer is being treated to a new hard drive and sitting among the chainsaws and VW parts in Willy's computer shop. I did find Drew's email address and have sent off a message asking about the status of the McCann collection.

Here is a link to a little article on Gordon:

Gordon McCann

My plate is pretty full at the moment but I sure do hope I remember to check on the possibility of those recordings when the project at hand simmers down.

Thanks, Arkie

I have not talked with Gordon or Drew or anyone else in that loop in several months but the last I heard was the project was progressing slower than expected, and I have not heard that anything is posted yet. When the Hunter collection was posted it was done in phases and I would expect that to happen with the fiddle collection as well, but that is a guess and not based upon any first hand information.

You might try contacting the Library at Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, MO for a more accurate update or timeline.

Arkie,
Do you know if the University has gotten any of those recordings digitized and available yet?

I think Charley Walden, whom you have contacted may have been one of the founders of the Missouri Fiddler's Association. I know he has been involved with the Association for a long time. Charley and Gordon McCann in Springfield, Missouri may be the most knowledgeable living resources on Missouri fiddling. Gordon had several thousand recordings of Missouri and Arkansas fiddlers which he has donated to Missouri State University in Springfield with the understanding they would digitize the collection and make it available over the internet as they have done with the Max Hunter collection.

Gordon and Drew Beisswenger have a book with accompanying CD recently published on Ozark Fiddle Music. I have yet to see the book, but it is my understanding it is the most comprehensive publication to date on Ozark fiddling.

Missouri has a very rich fiddle tradition including old time fiddlers and more contemporary contest fiddlers. Among the old time group, Bob Holt and Art Galbraith are worth a listen. And of course, there are a number of others.

If I end up running across any particularly delightful music, I'll send you a copy. This is probably going to end up being a wonderful topic.
I'm looking forward to mingling with the Old Circle and descendents.

The Exhibit comes with a series of panel displays and we are making some local panels to go along with the exhibit.
Music is going to be a fun one to work on!

He has recordings/video from this area!

This topic is now rolling smoothly for me.

Thanks,
M

Thanks, Kat. I hadn't found him!
I guess if he (or someone here) can't point me in the right direction, somebody at the WHMC archive might be able to.

I'm surprised at how little I've been able to find online on this.

I am trying to find out where (and when) the Missouri National Fiddler's Association started. I'd also like where/when for Midwest Fiddler's Association.

All I have been able to find so far is that when Jake Hughes (Midwest Fiddler's Assn, LudlowMO) died in 1964, Glen Keller (MoNat'l, BraymerMO) stepped up to host gatherings.

I haven't been able to find a site/contact for either of those groups and suspect they may have been absorbed by MoState Old Time Fiddlers Association.

Does anybody know where I can find information on these groups?

Thanks,
M
