Subject: Lyr Add: EILEEN O'NEILL From: GUEST Date: 03 Apr 10 - 03:56 PM A Maid from Tralee, she has taken my fancy, As fair as the lily, as pure as the snow, She lives on the road you would take towards Killarney, When my days work was over to see her I'd go. Morning and evening she worked in her dairy, Cleaning the hoops of her firkins and pails, She held my heart captive that sweet little fair one, That beautiful damsel called Eileen O' Neill I remember the night that I went to her father, To ask if he'd give me his daughter to wed, Unless you will pay me down twenty bright guineas, You never will sleep in my fine feathered bed. Oh the tears from my eyes fell like drops from a fountain, Saying if you refuse me her I will steal, So morning and evening I haunted the mountain, That shadowed the homestead of Eileen O' Neill One dark, dreary night as I lay in my hiding, A bright light shone out from my darlings domain, I hurried my footsteps for that was the signal, Tonight I would steal away Eileen O' Neill. Make no noise dearest darling, my father is sleeping, Your footsteps might wake him be as mute as a mouse, Sure we barely had gone when he started his bawling, Eileen where are you, there's a ghost in the house! We went to the station, two tickets we ordered, That evening at four sure we landed at Cork, And soon after that we were out in the ocean, And ever since then we've been here in New York. Now we've two darling buachaills and two lovely cailíns, And each of them now sure could tell you the tale, How their father thanks God for that night that he stole her, Their own darling mother sweet Eileen O' Neill. |

Subject: ADD: The Maid of Tralee From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Jan 10 - 03:30 PM Hmmm. I know of Ellen O'Reilly, the Maid of Tralee. There's also Mary, the Rose of Tralee. But I don't know of an Eileen. -Joe- THE MAID OF TRALEE Young Connel was gallant, young Ellen was fair He gaz'd and she blush'd, no one whisper'd - beware Young Ellen was fair and young Connel was brave, He swore to her beauty his heart was a slave; He pip'd and he danc'd and he sang full of glee And his song was of love and the maid of Tralee. Fair Ellen, sweet Ellen, fair Ellen O Reilly, Fair Ellen, the maid of Tralee. O say can the tongue a soft language impart, Persuasive and sweet yet unknown to the heart? Can true love so soon with possession grow cold Or, say, did he sigh after glory or gold? For high wav'd the banner, he went o'er the sea, And left to her sorrow the maid of Tralee. Fair Ellen, sweet Ellen, fair Ellen O Reilly, Fair Ellen, the maid of Tralee. That cheek where the roses and lilies were spread, Now boasts but the lily - the roses are fled; That eye, whose bright glance the heart's raptures reveal'd, Now dim with a tear, no more lustre shall yield; And broken with sighs, now for ever must be The once tuneful voice of the maid of Tralee. Fair Ellen, sweet Ellen, fair Ellen O Reilly, Fair Ellen, the maid of Tralee. from The Harp of Renfrewshire: a collection of songs and other poetical pieces, by William Motherwell (page 58) |
