OK, this is advertising pure and simple, can't disguise it in any other way...

Having run a number of 1- or 2-hour songwriting workshops at festivals in the last three years, I had been itching to run a full week long course that would give the opportunity to go into the various aspects of songwriting in more detail and would enable a more rounded-off approach using practical examples and exercises. So when Yvonne & John Hart approached me with the opportunity to run a course at 'Gleanings', their new rural study centre built in the magical Shropshire countryside in the middle of wild flower and hay meadows, I jumped at the opportunity.

The course will run from 6th to 11th June 2010 and is titled "Songwriting for the Unsuspecting", alluding to my belief that everyone can write at least one good song – my own songs took me by surprise, after all! We will follow the songwriting process from intent, idea and inspiration to structured crafting, arrangement and instrumentation, and will include elements of performance and marketing, (in other words getting one's song "out there"). The participants (maximum 10) will have the chance to put all these into practice and in addition there will be one-to-one tutorials to help individuals develop their skills. No need to be playing an instrument (but if you happen to, do bring it along).

There will be two 3-hour sessions and workshops each day, Monday to Friday. In the evenings there will be sessions and singarounds, either at the 'Gleanings' centre or one of the local pubs, and on Friday an opportunity to play at/attend a social evening organised by the Centre.

More information on http://folk4all.net/Gleanings.htm.

Note additionally that Harvey Andrews will also run his excellent songwriting course (I attended it myself a few years back) at Gleanings, 2-7 May.

Does sound absolutely wonderful. I'm dead jealous of the lucky 10 who can make the time to be there. They'll have such a good time - and probably enrich the folk world with some great new songs.

This sounds fascinating and much more fulfilling than the usual one hour songwriter's workshop at a folk festival.

Unfortunately I cant get the time off work but it sounds wonderful. It would be good to know what pubs you are going to to sing around in as Mr Scarecrow and I live in Shropshire and would love to come along. If you are looking for local song sessions. There is one on the 1st Sunday ie the 6th at the Black Swan in Jackfield. It's a bit of a way from the Stiperstones but is run by local songwriter Bill Caddick so may be of interest. There is also one on the Tuesday(8th) but I'm not sure where it's going to be at the minute. If you are interested pm me

Good Luck old pal! sounds absolutely great,be sure to give us all a run down on how it went, and more importantly what was created.
Once again I'm jelous of you, you fortunate fellow, all that and flower meadows too!
Don't forget to tell your students that the famous Lancashire dialect writer Ammon Wrigley said that the best of the songs came out of the middle of a barrel! it should add to the ambience of the occaision!
Cheers Scowie!

Good to hear your voice, George- your course sounds wonderful. And satisfying. I would love to attend. I wish some person like you would do something of the sort in southeast Alaska. Have you thought of a visit? :)

In case anyone's still wavering about this, I can report (having run a tunes workshop there over the Easter weekend) that it is a great place, and rather that quoting it all here let me refer you to this posting on melodeon.net from one of the participants afterwards. Not so much about the workshop - George's will be different, of course, and no doubt excellent, but everything else about the place too.

It will be a week to remember.

Anahata

Best wishes for all atendees. Wish I could be one of the lucky few.

Never in the field of human folk music have so few waited so long for so much

Have a super time among the lambs and silkie chickens! I slept in the Byre for a long weekend earlier in the month and it is heaven - all that peace - you'll have writer's cramp!
See you, Vanessa and Christine on Saturday at the Folk4Africa Extravaganza.
