"Agus fagaimid siud mar ata se."

Could someone give me a phonetic pronunciation of this line? The Dubliners do this song on a few CDs and I have always loved the song and sing it now and then. Much as I like Ronnie Drew's vocal styling his pronunciation of this line is unclear to me.

Thanks a lot

Don

Well, I wouldn't be looking to Ronnie for the perfect pronunciation of Irish! (I can afford to say that, being a fellow Dub). A rough phonetic representation would be:

fawg-him-eed-shood-mor-a-taw-shay
- with stresses on the first, fourth and seventh syllables. The o in mor is short

The literal translation is "We'll leave that as it is!". A better representation of the sense is the English expression: " 'nuff said!"

Regards

Funny that this thread should appear just now that I am getting reaquainted with this song again, after learning it many years ago.As is often the case, I am paying more attention to the lyrics and seeing the symbolism of the "cow" in this song. It is of course a poitín still is it not?
"a cow that will never run dry"
"Pampered on corn , good barley and hops"
"warm and round and free n her paps"
etc, etc.

God I'm thick!!!
