This Wednesday will be the first in February so we will make our way to The Beech, Beech Road, Chorlton, Manchester to sings mostly but not exclusively traditional.

I trust all those who fancied coming but never made it will join us and those that did will come again.

Cheers

I afraid I won't be able to make it this week - nor will JJ. We are deparately practicing for our annual "Folk & Fish 'n Chips" night at Chelford Village Hall - songs and tunes mostly but not exclusively traditional.

I still have some tickets left.

Good to see you all last time; hope to make it again at some point as & when opportunity / weather permits.

Sean & Rachel, AKA Fiddlin' O'Piobaireachd & Frailin' Rapunzel o' the Barley Temple

PS : someone asked for the words of that Burns' song I did:

Winter - A Dirge (tune: MacPherson's Rant)

The wintry west extends his blast,
And hail and rain does blaw;
Or the stormy north sends driving forth
The blinding sleet and snaw:
While, tumbling brown, the burn comes down,
And roars frae bank to brae;
And bird and beast in covert rest,
And pass the heartless day.

"The sweeping blast, the sky o'ercast,"
The joyless winter day
Let others fear, to me more dear
Than all the pride of May:
The tempest's howl, it soothes my soul,
My griefs it seems to join;
The leafless trees my fancy please,
Their fate resembles mine!

Thou Power Supreme, whose mighty scheme
These woes of mine fulfil,
Here firm I rest; they must be best,
Because they are Thy will!
Then all I want-O do Thou grant
This one request of mine!-
Since to enjoy Thou dost deny,
Assist me to resign.

Thanks to all who turned up, but special thanks to Ken, Kate, Phil, Babs, Claudine, the lady who does the poems whose name I've sadly forgotten, Helen, Mike Cosgrave, Steve with the blues guitar, Steve Saxton with the whistles, Chris, Nigel, Martin, Dave, the other Dave, and anyone else whom I might have forgotten.

Have a beer for me down there Les, and I'll see you next Tues for the Beginners Tunes Session : )

We had beer, wine and Chicken Piri Piri which were all rather excellent but some how they didn't keep the rain away!

However, Tuesday will be the last one in February so we shall gather in The Beech and Begin some Tunes and a few songs! All welcome.

How about a night of the wild Morresco Dancing to welcome the Spring - some time in March I believe?

Cheers

Beautiful spring day here in Chorlton! Time to assault a song for Wednesday, the fisrt one in March, and stretch the vocal chords ready for a Singaround of mostly but not exclusively traditional songs and a few tunes.

I would council all members of The Beech Band - that is pretty well anybody who has been to The Beech of the Tunes Session- to let me know if they are coming to the Benefit for Haiti this Saturday at St Margarets Whalley Range. PM for further details.

Thanks to everyone who came to The Beech last night, so busy people had to sit down in shifts and all the cask was drunk plus the keg Boddies leaving only John Smith's, beer without the bother of flavour, and Guiness which has more than it's fair share of flavour.

The songs and tunes were suitably chaotic. I think we did St Pat proud.

St George's Day April 23rd
It is likely that Saint George was born in Palestine and was, according to tradition, a Roman soldier. He is the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, and Russia, as well as the cities of Amersfoort, Beirut, Fakiha, Bteghrine, Cáceres (Spain), Ferrara, Freiburg, Genoa, Ljubljana, Gozo, Milan, Pomorie, Preston, Qormi, Lod, Barcelona and Moscow, as well as a wide range of professions, organizations, and disease sufferers.

Rose Funeral, Ingested, Bleed from within and Martyr Defiled are at Eddies Rock Club and Nailed, Bloodshot Dawn, Narcotic Death and Decrepit Womb are on in Wakefield - with support - which they will clearly need! Nu Folk or what. I'll wait until they come down The Beech

Oh my God, Les - and I thought you were joking!!! I thought you'd made up the names of those 'beat combos' - truth is, indeed, stranger than fiction! Incidentally, I had rather bland musical tastes in my youth - until I discovered 'hard core' Trad, of course.

I certainly will be at the Beech on Wednesday (Inshallah). I've learned a new song specially for the occasion.

Little did I know as I started last night's Singaround that it would one of the best nights we have had. In fact I am inclined to say the best so far?

Thanks to Dave, Jeanette, Glynn, Ken, Janet, Karina, Ruth and their friend, Angela, Phil, Steve, Ishbell, Matthew, Helen and her friend, Dave, John, Kate, Shelley, Chris, Ged, Alan, John. Also Michael, Phil and Sandra who couldn't get in.

Great songs, great singing, excellent tunes flawlessly played (?) well spirited anyway.

How much fun can we have a small room whilst eating the sandwhiches that the Man U fans in the bar couldn't manage? Not forgetting Black Sheep and TT Landlord right to the end!

Thanks again

That was a remarkable evening - what a lot of great singers there are out there. If it carries on like this we're going to need a bigger room, or an even earlier start, or an overflow session in the garden, or mount a takeover bid on Chorlton FC...

And, and Ingrid, how could I after that brilliant story?

I sometimes think about another venue but I can't find one within walking distance of our house. Staggering home distance to be more precise.

The acoustics are reasonable - would be better without that old carpet. I don't fancy the Cricket Club as a venue and it is popular in its own way.

I used to have plans, now I just turn up sing, drink, make silly remarks and have a great time. As, I think Harold Wilson once said, even no plan is a plan, so to speak

As this is the nearest one to St George's Day we will celebrate the possibly Palestinian born, Roman Soldier who is Patron Saint of all sorts of places, in multicultural Manchester, with a mixture of songs and tunes from all over the place.

Be early and be seated

Les, Pip and others - just back from a music and walking raid in Lancaster and Dent - not much ash in evidence up there.

A quick note to say thank you for letting me into your excellent singaround at the Beech on 21st April. What a great night! Sorry about the speed of "Dennis Murphy's" and "John Ryan's" - must have been the influence of the Guinness and the Irish barman on my mandolin... Or perhaps it was some passing gene from my Kildare ancestors!

Anyway, do please pass on my regards to all the regulars at the next singaround - a fine set of people - and I hope to see you all again soon.
