Go to Wills site and wander around. It's like a candy store with no one around watching the joint.

Great!

I've been playing and singing this song since about 1964 and rarely get tired of it, although the melody consists of just the one verse (no bridge/"middle 8") and there are just the two verses of lyric (or one verse + one chorus, if you prefer).

I'm intrigued by Will's instrumental variations. I don't recall hearing them on my MJH record, but I do realize that several different recordings exist of many of his songs, and another source might reveal John playing some, if not all, of these licks. I would guess that Will came up with at least a few wrinkles on his own, and wonder if he's responsible for the whole shebang.

Either way, I'm about to follow Will's link to his own tabs to try and learn some new bits...

(PS: I've always heard, and have always sung "Roll my britches up to my knees, sell my todalo [sp?] to who I please," for what it's worth. There have been lengthy discussions here about the meaning and pronunciatrion of "toodleoo," or whatever, but I don't recall any controvery about which article of clothing was being raised up high...)

It's a smashing version of the old MJH classic, which I first heard by Simon Mayor and Hilary Jones back in their Spredthick days. The picking is clean and there is just something likably avuncular about Will Fly that makes you want to like everything he does.

Well, I've tried to get my head through the kitchen door - but it's swelled up to gigantic proportions. And it's ALL that Olddude's fault!

Anyway, I'm glad you liked the picking and, yes, the wrinkly bits in the middle are just me screwing around with the chord sequence (as usual) and doing what I can before age sets in... :-)

Jerry - I don't do a huge amount of singing in my YT videos, whereas I do a fair amount in a "live" situation. This is because I find - on the whole - that the projection needed when playing "live" is hard to replicate when recorded in my music room. Still, there's a bit of groaning here and there, though a large number of my videos are really intended as quasi-instructional/demonstrational.

Couple of excellent songs from Mr Fly at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club last night including a rather rude version of Candyman. Innocent that I am, I'd always thought it was about drugs not sticks of confectionary.

a rather rude version of Candyman

Indeed - John Hurt's words, I have to say, and not mine.

It was a very good night at the Elephant & Castle last night - I thought Mike Nicholson (the featured guest) was absolutely wonderful. I'm looking forward to presenting him with a nicely produced DVD of his performance (which I shot at the club) at the Charlwood village singaround tomorrow evening. Just a pity that the raffle was rigged, with not a blue ticket in sight... :-)

What Alan Day is referring to when he mentions the MrTenorGuitar channel on YouTube is this sort of thing:

Gentianne Mazurka

It's a delight to play duets with Al. The very first time I ever heard him play the Anglo concertina, I wanted to get together to play concertina and guitar duets. He's a great player.

Well, I think that's just about covered the agenda of the Mutual Appreciation Society - back to some serious fiddle practice before my lesson this morning...

Fiddle and you play fiddle also ... my friend just gave me one cause I always wanted to learn. Can't even figure out how to hold it ... then I realized that the bow is short, it is 27 inches , I guess it suppose to be 29 ? Oh well another project I won't get good at LOL

Dan, I play fiddle like someone who's been playing fiddle for about a year - which is to say I've been playing for about a year! I learned a bit of viola over 50 years ago, so it wasn't totally new. In fact, I've just bought a new instrument when I realised the one I bought a year ago just wasn't me. I've had it about two weeks now, and it's wonderful...

See? - you're never too old!

"Candyman" is not (literally) about candy, but it's not about drugs, either.

In the grand old tradition of double-entrendre, the "coded" references are sexual. And in the more recent tradition of US=folk-revival instrumental prowess, one's ablility to perform the John Hurt arrangement came to be very much about one's "manhood," not specifically sexual, but as a full-fledged grown-up fingerpicker.

When I was younger, I spent a lot of time working on "Candyman," and eventually, after years of effort, developed the ability to fight my way through it without any glaring errors. Can't do it as well any more, however, thanks to one Mr. Arthur Itis...
