Subject: Lyr Req: Mr.Jollyboy From: ChrisJBrady Date: 01 Feb 10 - 03:52 PM Am wondering if anyone has any music m/s from about 1910 that has the words to Mr. Jollyboy - the patent jig doll - that was around in the early 1900s. The tune(s) features on at least one of banjoist Olly Oakley's 78's from that time. Apparently there are two distinct Mr. Jollyboy songs. As an aside recordings of Olly Oakley can be found here: http://chrisbrady.itgo.com/jigdolls/Toronto_Jig_Olly_Oakley_1910.wma http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_4r0hZUcfM (Lumbrin Luke) but not playing the song / tune we are seeking. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mr.Jollyboy From: Jim Dixon Date: 02 Feb 10 - 12:40 AM The British Library Integrated Catalogue lists a score of MISTER JOLLYBOY by Emile Grimshaw (London: Clifford Essex Co., 1914) "for two banjos and piano"—I take that to mean it has no lyrics. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mr.Jollyboy From: Jim Dixon Date: 02 Feb 10 - 01:09 AM The British Library also has: MR JOLLYBOY by Marjorie Slaughter (London: Frank Howard, 1913), which is described as a "dance intermezzo" for solo piano. Again, I take that to mean it has no lyrics. Both the British Library and the National Library of Australia have: MR JOLLYBOY, words by Arthur Wimperis and music by Ralph Penso (London & Melbourne: Chappell & Co., 1910). You can see an image of the sheet music cover at The Sheetmusic Warehouse. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mr.Jollyboy From: ChrisJBrady Date: 02 Feb 10 - 09:17 AM Hi folks. Thank you for your responses and suggestions. Yes - we have researched the entries in the BL and NLA catalogues. But they cost money to copy!! We were hoping that someone would have the words somewhere!! There are at least two songs - one apparently sung by a group called The Grotesques. Tried searching for them on the Pathe News Archive but no luck. Also we're trying to find the recordings made by Olly Oakley and Alexander Prince (on 78s). We have also purchased two sets of various musical arrangements from The Sheetmusic Warehouse. And have just won another on eBay. These will eventually be scanned and go up onto a website for everyone to 'enjoy.' Chris B. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mr. Jollyboy From: ChrisJBrady Date: 16 Apr 10 - 04:42 AM The search continues ... We have just won on eBay 'Darktown Dandies' by Olly Oakley for 80p. This will be uploaded to YouTube and Archive.org as soon as we can find someone who camn make a MP3 from a 78 - any offers in London please? Also that is if the Royal mail delivers the thing intact. AND we now have a recording of 'Mr. Jollyboy' by Olly Oakley - currently on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGRTDnxjNPY Now all we need is Alex. Prince playing 'Hornpipe Meolody,' and 'Whistling Rufus.' And Prince or Oakley playing 'Fidgety Phil' (very rare tune that one, but quite a catchy one). |
