I never had it, so I'd had it, as far as being a judge was concerned. They said "what's 2+1?" and I said 3, but they said that wouldn't do because in their system it's 2. I managed to get through the pirating exams - they're not very rigorous, they only ask you one question, they say 'Who are you?' and I got seventy-five per cent on that." |

If you only read the press and don't get out there and see the bands then you might be swayed by others or just be lazy. A lot of the people i voted for didn't win or were not nominated, others did. My decisions were based on who i had seen live that year and who's albums i had listened too. |

Rather someone who is passionate and idiosyncratic (but not necessarily technically perfect) than someone who is technically brilliant but lacking in verve, soul and passion. Jon B puts heart and soul into his performances and it shows. Anyway, as a lover of those old recording of traditional singers, I've never held technical ability alone to be that important. Inhabiting the song and and putting it across like you truly believe in it counts for far more... 3. "Best" is purely in the ear of the beholder. Attempts to define objective standards are doomed to failure. Hooray! Silas: Are you one of the judges by any chance? Are you 'aving a laff? No, I'm just a lowly mortal with a heartfelt desire to listen to folk music that cannot be categorised as polite, bland or anodyne. Bring on the folk-brut revival! |
