Too late anyway by the sound of it as the trio got best duo,eh?
White floppy eared animals one year, duos with three people another ... wouldn't be the Folk Awards without something to cause controversy would it?

Who won best octet?

Just listening to Chris Evans on R2 (don't ask me why!).

He spent the last night "with the folkies" down at the Folk Awards. He said the place was full of "more celebrities than you could shake a sick at"

At least he's playing a couple of excerpts. The sublime and very musical 'Man of Constant Sorrow' by the Transatlantic Sessions gang following the god-awful racket of 'I Fought The Law' by The Bad Shepherds.

Chris has also just admitted he'd never heard of Cara Dillon before...

well, who were the judges?.the results will probably tell us more about the judges than anything else.
personally,If I want to get an expert opinion,on how to make a fruit cake,I would go to someone, who I know makes delicious fruit cakes.
[imo]there are a lot of people who have got themselves in to influential positions in the UK folk music industry, who know very little about folk music, and even less about traditional music or source singers.

Says at the front of this forum something about the preservation of Folk music... Is that why so many posters object to musicians who dare to move the genre forward and make it relevant to real people??
Richly deserved congrats to SOH for long overdue recognition.

The problem is as well Dick - and here I have regaled constantly against this including taking the BBC to the Information Commissioner - we don't know who the judges are.

So we can't judge how much they know.

Wouldn't dream of commenting on the knowledge of the judges (like Dick suggested).

But since they don't know the difference between a traditional song and one written in the last couple of years, and the differnce between a duo and a trio - I do have my doubts!!

I could have been a judge, but I never had the maths for the judgin'. I never had it, so I'd had it, as far as being a judge was concerned. They said "what's 2+1?" and I said 3, but they said that wouldn't do because in their system it's 2.

I managed to get through the pirating exams - they're not very rigorous, they only ask you one question, they say 'Who are you?' and I got seventy-five per cent on that."

Now then... one of the reasons Jon Boden is about the best male singer in folk right now is precisely because he doesn't bother trying to sound like anyone except Jon Boden. That alone is worth the prize.

The annual argument regarding the duality of SoH on the BBC Radio 2 Folk and Acoustic Message Board prompted me to post the following comment there this week:

On BBC Radio Devon 31Jan10 on Jim Causley's Devon Folk - 1hr 35 mins in and Steve Knightly announced that Show of Hands were actually a Trio and not a Duo .........

"musically and as an entity we are a very much a Trio"

BBC iPlayer Jim Causley's Devon Folk 31Jan2010

Will BBC Radio 2 please take note of that fact when accepting submissions for the 2011 Folk Awards?

Good for you Joanie.

The right-wing have no problems spouting their views at every opportunity. Look at the media power of Rupert Murdoch. The occasional opportunity to put forward a left-wing point of view is one not to be missed.

Ahhh, I see. So you don't actually need to be able to sing well at all to be voted 'Best Singer'.

I see.

Are you one of the judges by any chance?

I will remain nameless but i voted and it is a very open voting system but IS based on your knowledge of the folk releases/gigs of the year.
If you only read the press and don't get out there and see the bands then you might be swayed by others or just be lazy.

A lot of the people i voted for didn't win or were not nominated, others did.

My decisions were based on who i had seen live that year and who's albums i had listened too.

Silas:Ahhh, I see. So you don't actually need to be able to sing well at all to be voted 'Best Singer'

1. What Suegorgeous said.
2. Rather someone who is passionate and idiosyncratic (but not necessarily technically perfect) than someone who is technically brilliant but lacking in verve, soul and passion. Jon B puts heart and soul into his performances and it shows. Anyway, as a lover of those old recording of traditional singers, I've never held technical ability alone to be that important. Inhabiting the song and and putting it across like you truly believe in it counts for far more...
3. "Best" is purely in the ear of the beholder. Attempts to define objective standards are doomed to failure. Hooray!

Silas: Are you one of the judges by any chance?

Are you 'aving a laff? No, I'm just a lowly mortal with a heartfelt desire to listen to folk music that cannot be categorised as polite, bland or anodyne. Bring on the folk-brut revival!
