So the wearing of FAF (sic) tee-shirts doesn't really bother me. I've never seen anyone at my local pub(s) or Waitrose/Sainsburys/UKIP Member managed farmshop wearing one ..? |

That does not mean he is no good,far from it, he is brilliant, but let's not kid ourselves, he is not the best" Actually, the title is not the "best" folk dinger; it's "Folk Singer of the Year". As Tom says, Jon Boden has done huge amounts this year. He has worked with Bellowhead, Spiers and Boden and the Remnant Kings - each delivering material that is fresh, timely and important. His work continues to draw in legions of non-folkies, not least among them Martin Green, who is Head of the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremonies. As far as I know, Bellowhead is pretty much the only folk band that is really on his radar, and they are probably our best hope for getting any representation of folk into the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. It may not happen at all, but if it does, it's because Bellowhead register on the radar beyond the folk world in a way that 95% of folk bands do not. And apart from that, Jon is a wonderful proponent of traditional music and a damn fine singer. So, for all of these reasons, I am proud to have voted for him. |

I personally think Jon IS a truly fantastic singer, if not to everyone's taste (but you can't please all of the people..). His timbre, delivery, expression and originality combine to powerful effect, and he always delivers his chosen material brilliantly (what other definition of great singing is there)? It's not bel canto, but the adjective might be clue here. My interpretation of the award, however, is that it's not about vocal technique. It's about being a 'folk singer,' as in the job description - all of it. No folk singer has delivered more than Jon in the last twelve months - his workload has been prodigious (terrifying, actually) and he's made a lot of good new things happen, and happen extremely effectively. He IS at least best equal best folk singer at the moment (and after 'best equal,' in a game like this it has to be a lottery, naturally). I'll vote for that. (Jon, you can leave the used fivers in the normal place ;-) |

Rather someone who is passionate and idiosyncratic (but not necessarily technically perfect) than someone who is technically brilliant but lacking in verve, soul and passion. Jon B puts heart and soul into his performances and it shows. Anyway, as a lover of those old recording of traditional singers, I've never held technical ability alone to be that important. Inhabiting the song and and putting it across like you truly believe in it counts for far more... 3. "Best" is purely in the ear of the beholder. Attempts to define objective standards are doomed to failure. Hooray! Silas: Are you one of the judges by any chance? Are you 'aving a laff? No, I'm just a lowly mortal with a heartfelt desire to listen to folk music that cannot be categorised as polite, bland or anodyne. Bring on the folk-brut revival! |

If you only read the press and don't get out there and see the bands then you might be swayed by others or just be lazy. A lot of the people i voted for didn't win or were not nominated, others did. My decisions were based on who i had seen live that year and who's albums i had listened too. |
