Many will know that The Black Swan Folk Club, York, won the Radio 2 folk award for "Best Folk Club 2009", Roland walls is not a performer but he has been and is the lynchpin of the club, Roland is ill in hospital, being a private person he probably wouldn't thank me for this but I know he has many friends in the folk world who would wish to send him healing thoughts.
Peter

Roland,
Best wishes and a speedy recovery from all of The Yorkshire Garland Group. Roland has helped us on numerous occasions with publicity and advised us on our Phase 1 Launch Day at the NCEM a couple of years ago.

Peter, is there an address for sending cards, or should we use this thread/the newsletter address?

All best wishes to Roland for good and quick recovery.

I only heard yesterday and didn't realise he was in hospital that quickly. I agree totally that he is the centre of what has kept the Black Swan as it is. He has also been a great supporter of other smaller venues and clubs around the area and we've both benefitted from some publicity when we've wanted it at our own gathering close to York as well as having his company on a few occasions.

I hope we see him around again in the not too distant future.

I haven't met Roland but he made the very kind offer in Tykes News of buying me a pint of Adnams at a future NCEM concert in York following my review of the John Tams/Barry Coope & Roger Davies concert there on the eve of my 50th birtday.

I wish him a very speedy recovery and look forward to my pint at my next visit to NCEM!

Roland sent a newsletter today; as usual it should be available on the club website. Chris Euesden, Eddie Affleck and a few others will fill in for him on club matters for a while.

And the club has a new e-mail address:
blackswanfolkclub (at) yahoo.co.uk

He says he'll be out of circulation for quite a while.
best wishes to Roland for health and good recovery.

I'm sending all my very best healing wishes and hope that his recovery proceeds apace - we can't afford to lose him!

Ahhh, ditto for meself, Anne. I have had the pleasure of singing at the Black Swan twice and Roland is to be congratulated for organising such a wonderful folk club.

I did receive the latest Black Swan newsletter detailing that Roland is in hospital. I wish him a speedy and total recovery.

Thanks for the news, Peter.

Chris has seen Roland and he is recovering from surgery, I think he will shortly have access to a 'puter so it may better to send messages to the Black Swan Folk Club site
Peregrina has posted the e-mail address a couple messages above this one.
For what my opinion is worth ( Roland was responsible for bringing 2BS&S together, it was on his suggestion we started performing) He has managed keep so many factions of the folk genre cordially under the one umbrella it cannot be underestimated the positive effect that has had on the Greater York folk scene, and a fine gentleman to boot!

Hear hear!
Wishing Roland as speedy a recovery as possible under the circumstances (said he with typical cautionary phrasing!)...

All best wishes to Roland.

I have been an occasional visitor to the Black Swan for over 20 years, and Roland seems to have been ever-present. The amount of work he does, not only for the club, but for folk music in general in this region, is staggering. Long may he continue to do so!

I was talking to Roland last night at the Black Swan, he has only just read this thread and he said that appreciated the kind words written and he felt humbled, he looked the best I have seen for a while, still on chemo so feels grotty and tired sometimes which, knowing Roland, means all of the time, he also said the club "regulars" were doing a great job in his absence.
