Subject: RE: Tech: Laptops Needed 4 Catters Africa Charity From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Feb 10 - 06:13 PM Sam- I was working with a similar project in Ethiopia last year, some 30 refurbished desktop computers and accessories for a school in a rural market town. One of the major hurdles we encountered was getting the computers through customs without excessive charges. I hope you have people in-country that can walk through the necessary paperwork. We eventually succeeded and now the computer lab is fully functional, and we even got the satellite dish operational again! Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Tech: Laptops Needed 4 Catters Africa Charity From: GUEST,Sam Pirt Date: 09 Feb 10 - 05:03 PM Hi EBarnacle Thats great to hear, it really will help so much, it is hard to even express how much. When it is ready you can get in touch via my website - www.sampirt.co.uk Dont forget Catters to keep an ear out if you hear of a laptop going free. Thankyou, Sam |
Subject: RE: Tech: Laptops Needed 4 Catters Africa Charity From: EBarnacle Date: 07 Feb 10 - 06:26 PM I have been taking in and repairing laptops for about a year now. Once they have been rehabbed, I give them, no questions asked to people who I believe can benefit from access and who can change their lives with access. If the laptop is rehabbable and is Pentium 3 or newer, I will take it. It does not have to be currently operable and the case does not have to be pretty but all of the parts should be there, including power pack, battery and support disks, if available. I have built a collection of screens and other parts so I can take units with bad monitors. At present, I have only one ready to go and it's been promised already. I currently have a Toshiba that I will have to get parts for before I assemble it. When that is done, you are welcome to it. I am not an official charity. I just do what I can. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Laptops Needed 4 Catters Africa Charity From: catspaw49 Date: 05 Feb 10 - 01:14 PM Sam, you need to at least drop by every now and then as we miss you and your expertise around here. Connie and Wayne and Karen and I were out a few months ago and "My Grandfather's Clock" came on the background music.....not a normal song for that type of thing. We all laughed and said it must have been for us. Explanation for Others: When Sam and Ian came to the States with Bill Sables they came to see me. It was the day prior to a surgery preceding the valve surgery and as I had to at the hospital at 5 AM, we were staying at Connie and Wayne's home in Columbus. Bill, Sam, and Ian, came to their house instead and a fine time was had by all. Wayne has a Grandfather's clock that chimes every 15 minutes. If Sam and Ian were playing, it didn't matter what they were playing, but if the clock chimed they transitioned smooothly into a chorus of "Grandfather's Clock" and went back to the original tune. It was funny and an example of excellent musicianship. Don't make yourself so scarce Sam. Had a nyckleharpa thread just a few months back.(;<)) Spaw |

Subject: RE: Tech: Laptops Needed 4 Catters Africa Charity From: katlaughing Date: 05 Feb 10 - 10:26 AM Good to *see* you, Sam! And, I am not surprised you are involved in such good works. Good for you. I'll ask my Rog if they have any at work; I don't think they will, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Dan, as Sins says, Sam is a longtime member, has been to Mudcat Central, played on Mudcat radio live with video feed, and it is safe to say anything he is involved in is legit and outstanding. I know it's good to be sure, though.:-) kat |
