most events at the arms are a charity event, a lot has been raised for demelza house, kent air ambulance, help for heros to name a few.
you can always contact sharon at the arms or send something to sharon she will put it into the jar. but please woodsie dont feel you have to, the day is not to get money out of people for nothing, unlike most pub sessions where the only people to benefit are the landlords, at the arms any day organised via mudcat can always be assumed to be for a charity, not to line the pockets of the staff or owner,

Sorry folks but I wasn't aware that this was charity event and wasn't asked at any time to donate or buy a raffle ticket - Can I make a belated donation, and where?

""The Dead recorded "Whiskey in the Jar".
Maybe I should also resurrect my folk-style "White Rabbit".

I play enough "Folk" Don to justify some diversions.
""

That wasn't a dig at what you play Richard. It was in anticipation of some comment from you about my normally being part of the "Anything Goes Brigade".

I haven't got that Dead compilation. I used to have loads of vinyl and my wife Kay was a Deadhead. I did buy the two CD box sets covering 1965-1973 & 73-95. You are quite correct Richard it is on On "So Many Roads" but this is just them messing around at a stage rehearsal "I haven't heard that in 30 years" says Weir "nor me" says Garcia. "I suppose it's Irish" "Yeah" ... and so on ...then the Amazon MP3 preview cuts out! They never recorded it or performed it live. I must check out Shady Grove though. I do already have a lot of stuff with Jerry & Grisman. I do cover a few Dead songs myself and sang "Brown Eyed Women" the last time I was at The Good Intent!

Woodsie, according to Tom Henehan on another thread here about Whiskey in the Jar: -

"the Grateful Dead box-set "So Many Roads," which includes a rehearsal tape of "Whiskey in the Jar," recorded shortly before Jerry Garcia's demise. (It's the second-to-last selection on the album, followd by the title tune, which was recorded at the Dead's final show in Chicago.)
Jerry had just recorded the song with David Grisman for their "Shady Grove" album (which I have NOT yet heard). To my ear, he's got the melody "wrong," or perhaps "different from the traditional": the verse should have an "ABAB" melodic structure, as I recall it, with a rising or starting line, floowed by a concluding line, then a repeart of the two lines before the refrain. Jerry sings it "ABBB," with the second or "finishing" melody line repeated almost-ad-infinitum, which sounds counterintuitive to me"

The Dead played and recorded many folk songs but I've never heard them do Whiskey In The Jar! T'would have been great though, if they had. They do a great Jack O Roe and "Lady With A Fan" Station is based on the old folk song "Lady Of Carlisle"

I had a marvellous time, arriving about an hour early due to the vagaries of bus travel.

So I was about three pints up on everybody else in the falling down stakes.

The beer is excellent, the food addictive, the welcome sensational, and the landlady, apart from being a vey nice lady (stop blushing Sharon), wants us there.

Now that I'll be mobile again, I'll be dropping in for a chat with Sharon in the next fortnight, to see about organising not only more Saturday Sessions (I think, on a regular basis, Saturday allows more recovery time than Sunday, as well as better transport), possibly about every two months, but also a regular Folk (yes I did say "Folk" RB) Club, monthly.

I would be grateful for any help I can get in timing these to avoid festivals and similar sessions. It will help to know up front which weekends are a no-no.

For the Folk Club, I thought Thursday might be a good choice. Small steps, I think, maybe third Thursdays, and if the response warrants it we can always increase to two (first and third).

I'm prepared to put in the time (I've got lots of that), but I'd like to use the first club night to find out exactly what the attenders would like it to be.

Anyone who would like to be involved in th organising, just let me know.

That's all, I've waffled enough, but I'm a bit fed up with being retired from organising a club.

Don T.

I had to leave as I had already pre-arranged a pick-up for 5 O'Clock and had been there with my 3 yr old grandson since Midday. Country Joe & The Fish were one of the great psychedelic bands to emerge from SanFransico in the mid sixties, along with Airplane, Quicksilver & The Dead. Trouble is most people only know them for "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag" which is not really representative of their output. The 1967 album "Electric Music For The Mind & Body" is a classic!

It was a very nice afternoon. I only caught the end of the dancing but hell I really only go for the singing anyway. The largely biker assemblage of audience was very amiable and appreciative - and turned out on conversation to number players who had they been found out earlier might have been coercable into giving us a song.

Apparently it is British Bike day there this morning - but I must prepare a lecture!

Woodsie, shame you went, just after you left I did Country Joe's "Who am I?" and you'd have been the only person not saying "Wow, what was that song, great words, who wrote it"

with many many thanks to sharon and the staff at the crayford arms for the copious amounts of free grub and the warmest of welcomes as always, the arms is the one pub that really wants and enjoys the folk scene, shame its not used more, but hay ho.
sadly i was not up to much due to a slipped disc and had to leave early as the pain towards the end got too much, i also want to thank loose women who made the trip up to the arms in such numbers, also the gongscourers who had no excuse for not being there, i feel it was a good day for all who came and hope you will be back

I have advised Mr Bridge that there are some eccellent guests at Fab Club on April 18th. Some of you might like to see Mick Ryan and Paul Downes. It's free.
