If you like the Bonzo Dog Doo Band (or their various alternative names) you'd love the Cliquot Club Eskimos. Harry Reiser, plectrum banjoist extraordinaire was the leader and they were probably the hottest novelty band of the twenties. They were sponsored by Cliquot Club beverages. Many years ago, I ought a cassette of their music which I just ran across today. I'd missplaced it for years. What a hoot. I can even here where Spike Jones got som of his ideas (they have one instrumental where a dog barks on cue for the one note pitched perfectly to his bark. When I couldn't find my cassette, I bought a CD of the Cliquot Club Eskimos and it was a major dissapointment. It was a reunion recording and they had none of the spark of the originals.

A while back, I promised someone that if I found the cassette, I'd transfer it to CD and share a copy with him. Might it have been Will Fly, as in Have Plane, Will Fly?

It will take a few days before I transfer the tracks to CD, but I want to do it before I lose the cassette again.

Anyone else ever heard of the Cliquot Club Eskimos?

Jerry

I remember drinking Cliquot (or as we called it, 'KleeKwat) Club soft drinks in my childhood. I do know there was such a band, but I don't think I ever heard it either on radio or record. Mayhap the original band can be heard on the mystical, magical internet.

And here's a website: http://www.redhotjazz.com/eskimos.html

There are several downloable songs from the '20s using Realplayer which is not on my computer.

Hey, John:

I'm familiar with the website, and it's a good background on the band. I don't have the right kind of player in my computer, but may download it, as it's free and I've used it before.

I don't remember ever even seeing a Cliquot Club bottle in an antique store, but the music was before my time, if you can imagine that. It's great stuff, though. The only CD I could find was one I got from Elderly instruments and it was a major dissapointment. I couldn't even get through it one time. The tracks on my cassette are pretty clean and scratch free and they sound like the music from that era, not a revisiting fifty years later.

Thanks for posting. I didn't know if anyone other than Will Fly had ever even heard of them. Harry Reser is probably better known in his own right. On the reunion album he sounds more like Eddie Peackock, or whatever the guy's name was who did the chugga chugga chording style of playing, which I find much less listenable. Thyat's just me.

Jerry

Check you PM. Lots of Club Music and Reser fronting other bands at You Tube.

Those recordings are way before my time, but in the late 40s and 50s quart bottles of various CC sodas were available in the Los Angeles area, so I'm sure elsewhere.

There is a store in the northern part of Los Angeles that sells many old defunct brands of sodas, and even current brands that are not otherwise available here. All of their sodas are sold in glass containers; bottles I think they're called.
