Subject: BS: Green Eggs and... From: SINSULL Date: 08 Feb 10 - 03:44 PM Cuillion delivered a dozen eggs from her farm to me last weekend. Beautiful, cruelty free eggs. BUT one of them is green. Any idea why? The feed? The chicken? Dye? |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: Melissa Date: 08 Feb 10 - 03:48 PM aracana (or something like that) chickens lay colored blue/green eggs |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: katlaughing Date: 08 Feb 10 - 03:50 PM According to the answers on THIS BOARD: The only real difference between a Green egg and a White egg is the green egg is laid by an Aracona chicken and a white egg is laid by a Leghorn chicken. Sounds pretty!:-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: katlaughing Date: 08 Feb 10 - 03:51 PM Oh, I forgot to say...they will be green IF they are meant to go with ham!:-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: LilyFestre Date: 08 Feb 10 - 04:06 PM The above mentioned chickens are also called Easter Egg Hens. :) I haven't raised them but my aunt has...and some of them indeed are tinted green!!!!! Fresh eggs are THE BEST!!! We have hens and also a waiting list for fresh eggs!!!! They really DO taste better and the yolk is such a vibrant, pretty color! Michelle |

Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: Rapparee Date: 08 Feb 10 - 04:10 PM There's no reason not to juggle hand grenades, as long as either the lever (spoon) is taped down or you can watch someone else do. |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: SINSULL Date: 08 Feb 10 - 04:15 PM Come closer bruce so I can kill you. Or are you too suffering from cabin fever? I will have to take a picture of this egg. It really is pretty. |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: wysiwyg Date: 08 Feb 10 - 04:23 PM Araucana eggs are not green inside (just like brown). They will taste like reglar delish range eggs. I never knew an Araucana that wasn't fed good stuff. They are another whole range of color when wet. Some folks notch little blowholes at each end, blow out the yolk (may have to break it with a toothpick before it will come out easy), and paint the shells with clear nail polish. They then keep forever and can be hung up-- with a broken toothpick inside to attach a thread hanger. We used to make annual Easter Egg trees in school, like that. Sometimes you see them nowadays on bushes. They come in ranges of dark to light and green to blue; sometimes the minerals do not deposit evenly, and you get faint, glowing stripes. Shine a flashlight thru it for some cool light effects. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: mousethief Date: 08 Feb 10 - 05:47 PM Which, then, are the green eggs where the shell is green all the way through? That's the kind we get from our local farmer. O..O =o= |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 08 Feb 10 - 05:53 PM You never see proper Easter eggs nowadays. Just the chocolate ones from shops. |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: JohnInKansas Date: 08 Feb 10 - 05:58 PM I seem to recall hearing that various kinds of duck and goose eggs may be differently colored, but my training in ideggification has apperently been sufficiently minimal to defy my recollection of specifeggs. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: Cuilionn Date: 08 Feb 10 - 06:22 PM Aye... most of my chooks are Golden Comets, but I also have a couple of Araucanas, a few Barred Rocks, and some Old English Game Bantams. SINSULL, the dozen you received represent that mix. Enjoy them with abandon! An aside-- when I was a bairn, we kept Barred Rocks and Araucanas in a pen that was moved each year to a different fourth of our veggie garden. We threw them food scraps as well as weeds we pulled from among the rows of veggies. Once, after my mother processed and canned a large batch of beets, the chooks were given all the beet peelings. The araucanas laid PINK eggs that week! --Cuilionn |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Feb 10 - 06:38 PM Here's a Wikipedia article about Araucana chickens (not to be confused with Ancona chickens). It has a picture of the egg, but it calls it blue, not green. (It seems blue-green to me.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 08 Feb 10 - 07:59 PM Thought this was about the green Chinese preserved eggs. They have a clear green jelly like 'white' and an almost black yolk. Not for the faint hearted... |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: SINSULL Date: 08 Feb 10 - 08:26 PM There are white and brown and different sizes but only one green. Quite pretty. And so far all are delicious. Bright yellow yoke that stands up nicely. Yum! |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: MGM·Lion Date: 08 Feb 10 - 10:34 PM Jim Dixon ~ I think that is the shade called 'turquoise': my late wife & I spent many hours of our lives disputing as to whether it was a shade of blue [her opinion] or green [mine]. |
Subject: RE: BS: Green Eggs and... From: katlaughing Date: 08 Feb 10 - 11:19 PM Ah, but turquoise comes in many different shades...some closer to green, some closer to blue.:-) According to THIS it is both, no matter. katsmiling |
