Oscar Brand, who turned 90 years old yesterday has written more than 300 songs and recorded 90 albums. He has been hosting Folksong Festival on WNYC radio for 65 years. He was interviewed by host Michael Enright on The Sunday Edition on CBC Radio in Canada. I thought it one terrific interview and want to share it with you.

Oscar Brand ;-)

I saw him live some 25+ years ago, with my parents, who had been listening for 30+ years...

I'm looking forward to listening to this!

I heard it live from start to finish and it's worth finding the right link. Start at www.CBC.ca and see what gets you there. Michael Enright is as good at radio as Oscar is, and he likes Oscar too. It was very good fun.

You have to have the Adobe Flash Player, for which there is a link at the bottom of the page. The Oscar Brand material starts at about 9 mins.

"The Oscar Brand material starts at about 9 mins."

That's funny because when I click it it starts right off with Oscar.

I knew he was alive (thankfully); I didn;t know he was still doing his WNYC radio show, which I grew up with. Wow.

Thanks Bob...what a beautiful soul... he continues to be an inspiration... I remember the TV show, 'Let's Sing Out'. I tuned in faithfully and was curious about his use of a nylon string guitar.. which was different back then...not used by the trad. country players.. The only guest I can recall now was Josh White with a lit cigarette stuck in the headstock of his guitar.
somehow that image stayed with me... a smokin' black bluesman on national televison.... bless ol' Oscar the Grouch,

Every old codger who thinks the only thing Oscar every did was record "Bawdy Songs & Backroom Ballads" should tune in to this one.
Not too many are privileged to enhance their legacies past 90.

I didn't realize Brand was still doing his radio show. He was, for awhile in the 1960s, broadcast in Los Angeles. I enjoyed those programs. It would be nice to have access to those as as historic documents. Thank you for post the link to the current program, Bobad.

Born in Winnepeg? I did not know that. How is it that Winnepeg has produced so MANY amazing musicians?

Too fuckin cold or too many skeeters to go outside?

Sorry, but I'll say anything fer a joke, eh?

RIP.

BTW.... you played at Carnagie Hall? I did not know that. Wow... kewl!

One song, but man, it was Carnegie Hall. Heady stuff to a 17-year-old. The reason I got on that stage was due to Mr Brand. He did it mostly because I was a fellow Canuck. I've never forgot him for that. Never will.
