Also Art, I missed out on the auction, can't seem to get very far with this dinosauer 386. I never tire of singing Nightriders Lament, but do a great job of screwin up the yodel, but after hearing Jerry Jeff's yodel, I don't feet too bad. Got to find a way of hearing your Night Rider's Lament. I finally figured out why I don't write too many songs. Firstly lack of talent and secondly there are tons and tons of great songs just waiting to be embraced... |

There's a 99 & 44/100% chance that she is NOT the Annie in Paxton's fine song. But Anne hills was a part of a fine trio for a time with Tom and Bob Gibson. It was called THE BEST OF FRIENDS. I've a closely guarded tape of a grand set they did at Holstein's in Chicago on 2/16/85. And isn't "FOLLOW THAT ROAD" a wonderful song? |

She *claimed* to be jet-lagged, but boy I sure wish I could sing half as good as that when I'm NOT jet-lagged. She was late getting into Portland, and the opening act had a few nervous moments wondering if they were going to run out of practiced material... but Anne showed up and was wonderful. Did a wide spread of songs, some hers and some others, and kept us all on the rollercoaster. She sang "Never Grow OLd" and we all joined in, and the little methodist church filled up with harmony; she did David Roth's song about the hispanic guy with cancer (Juan Juarez maybe?) whose whole circle of friends shaved their head in support of him and you could see people wiping their eyes; she did her song, Follow that Road, and you could have heard a pin drop, she got a howl of laughter from the audience and much applause when she did B&B's Orange Cocoa Cake a capella as fast as she could (that's where the jet lag showed up). She sang Dave Messengil's Orphan train, and ended with two Blessings songs, it was a great night. Frank was pretty nervous about her being late, I forgot to look and see if he had any fingernails left at the end of the night. He's a sweetie, and amazingly enthusiastic, and boy, does he love this music. I had a sudden lightbulb click when she was singing this Tom Paxton song I didn't know, something about how I could never leave you... and I was reflecting on why I wouldn't sing that song, or some of the others, because I believe when a relationship is over, you set it down and get on with your life, and not linger... like many of her songs did, and AHA, I all of a sudden realized she must be the Annie of "Annie's song" (as in, "now Annie's going to sing her song called take me back again"). We have a newly built Hyundai disc manufacturing plant in West Eugene. (They've recently been in trouble for being reluctant to hire women and minorities.) Right downtown, in the old Bon Marche building (where I used to get kicked off the escalator on my way home from St. Mary's Lower School) is the Symantec company. Both of these are targets for the monthly riots put on by the local anarchists. Springfield, right next door, has the Sony plant. (The anarchists don't dare show their hooded faces in Springfield.) The University of Oregon built a research park near the river, but it's having a difficult time getting tenants. Parts of the city want to be friendly to high-tech companies. Actually the place is booming in spite of itself. Property values are skyrocketing, so get here soon. You can go almost everywhere on the bike paths, this being the most bicycle-friendly city in North America. Sam Bond's Garage - used to be a garage in the Whiteaker neighborhood. Now it's a tavern, and they have an open mike type of set-up on Sundays, especially for folk-irish-celtic music types. I would have to sneak in there wearing a disguise because there are people who hang around outside who want to kill me. You would be safe though, as long as you don't look like a yuppie or a cop. There are dance companies, dance troupes, ballet, square dancers, and it's possible to major in Dance (or something like that) at the University of Oregon. There's the Hult Center for the Performing Arts, The Lord Leebrick Theater, and the Cuthbert Ampitheater (outdoor venue) all of which you should check out. One hour west is the Pacific Ocean, now more crowded than Art remembers, but still magnificent. One hour east is the Cascade mountains, also magnificent all year long. It rained all through the nineties, so I'm expecting sunshine during the otts. We also have the finest police force in the entire nation! |

I absolutely loved taking my dogs to the beach and walking with the surf pounding and the mists rolling in. I think if I'd lived that direction instead of Portland I'd still be there. I might head out that direction again some day. My son is in Seattle now and he and his lady want me out on the Left Coast, so ... maybe in a couple of years. (Kat, if you reveal my plans to leave wyoming sometime in my lifetime, I'll be steamed! ;-] ) Isn't it wonderful and poignant how some places just burrow into you and always create a longing in your heart when you remember them? I hardly ever get nostalgic for Santa Fe -- except for the wonderful weather which meant I could ride my bike just about the year round -- but I often feel lonesome for Oregon. WW |

I miss the Oregon coast like crazy. Here's the details: THIRTY-TWO years ago (pushin' 33) Carol and I left Chicago with everything we cared about loaded into a VW bus (1967). We headed West to find the place where we wanted to live. We had our records, books, cat and dog. We hit every Western state before settling in Depoe Bay, Oregon. There we found a house on a cliff looking South toward the town. It rented for $60.00 a month. We also paid that same amount for a storefront right downtown on the ocean. That became THE FOLK ART SHOP. Sold records, banjos, dulcimers, books, and all manner of home made folkart items. To make a long story short, we lasted there about 2 years---singing in Lincoln City and Newport--trying to sell things and ideas folkie. NOBODY came in to buy. Nobody knew what we were doing. Very few gigs. Eventually we headed back to Chicago and the Midwest where making a living with folk music was doable in a beatnik sort of way and travel was easier. (The East Coast was closer now.) But a love for the Oregon Coast will be a part of me as long as I live. If folks like the people talking in this thread had been in Oregon back then---if places to hang and hear and play the music had been there----if anybody who knew who Woody & Pete were (and the ones who did know of them didn't think that to know them meant I was a Communist or worse)---well, I might still be there. I came to love walking the beaches in the fog and rain. Now, when it rains here in Illinois, I get nostalgic for Oregon. I go out in it and walk and pretend that the fog here is obscuring tidal flats at he base of Cape Foulweather and hundreds of tide pools filled with unbelievable forms of life. I do hope you good people out there know fully what a paradise you are so lucky to inhabit. Here's one guy and gal who are truly glad we climbed down those cliffs when we had the energy and the health to do it. And if you folks looking for alien life in space would only look once at the base of Cape Foulweather, I'm sure you would find all that you search for -- and all without first having to discover warp drive. A production I co-wrote with a friend is done frequently at OMSI during the holidays, "Return of the Light" -- a mixed media celebration of the winter solstice. They reprised it last winter and I think he's doing some rewrites and updating and it will be performed again this winter solstice season. I'd love to see it again, but don't know if I can get out at both Thanksgiving and Christmas. But if anyone's in the area and it comes up, you know one of the writers...Ta-DAH! :-] WW |

But as it turns out, we both enjoyed our stay very much. I'd be happy to put you up. But you'd have to put up with us! :o) No state income tax in Washington. However, if you work in Oregon, they will take Oregon state income tax out of your check. And what do you get for it? Nothing, nada, zip. It is so irksome. Live and work in Washington is a better deal. Yes, shop in Oregon where there is no sales tax. Beaverton Oregon is the computer center around here. Maybe there's more in Vancouver than I know. Dance therapist? Is that like physical therapy using dance? Never heard of it. But then I never heard of music therapy until last year. I've heard it's good to live in Washington (no income tax) and shop in Oregon (no sales tax). Is that true? Drive east on I-84 and check out the gorge and then back on the WA side on St Hwy 14 to Portland. If you decide to do that give me times and dates , we live about 2 hours east of Portland but the scenery is breath taking. My work schedule affords me some week days off as well. So EZR. It is a possibility. There is six to eight active M'catters that live in and around the Portland area. They might answer to the call. Let's give them a chance to catch up to the thread. Mudjack |
