Both Firefox and IE have suddenly stopped playing music.

Any ideas?

It was my understanding that browsers don't play music...they send the file to whatever your default player is.
In Firefox it's at options->tools->applications.

of course, it's possible to accidently hit 'mute' on sound card.

Bill, that is set for Real player and downloads work fine.

It's the background sound that is not working. For example in http://www.johnnymudd.com/onelegged.html
there is the line

bgsound src="music/mp3/onelegged.mp3"

It works fine on John's machine but suddenly stopped working on mine

You can also try looking at the program that came with your sound card to see if there is a restore defaults option - that worked for me.

Thanks bobad, I just tried your suggestion but it didn't make any difference.

"It works fine on John's machine..."

Have you tried other sites/files? Maybe that src link is the problem.

Yes. They just stopped working on my machine for no apparent reason. I can play mp3 files just fine but bgsound stopped working. It is not server side 'cos it works for John.

IE has a click box at Tools|Internet Options|Advanced tab in a section called "Multimedia" where you need a check in the box to "play sounds in web pages" that might affect what you're getting.

There are adjacent clicks to set whether "animations" etc will run.

As mentioned previously, you should have a little "speaker" icon in the lower right toolbar.

If you click the icon it should open to show whether the speaker is turned on or off. (It should show a red "x" on the icon if it's off.)

With some sound cards, if you double-click on the icon, or click a link/button on the normal popup, you get an expanded popup that shows "mixer channel settings" or something similar, where you can set different sound levels for various kinds of sounds. You might find that the speaker is on but the channel that plays the music is set too low or is separately turned off.

Another possibility is that the site(s) where the sound is missing may be using an "applet" of some kind (Java, Flash, etc) that is different than what your computer is set to use for music. You may need an applet that you don't have, or have turned off; or another applet that's turned on may be misdirecting things. (Tools|Internet Options|Programs tab|Manage add-ons in IE)

John

Go to Control Panel ->Sound ->Sounds and see if "no sounds" has somehow been selected. If so, select "windows default" instead.

Bert - are you running Vista? People were reporting sound problems after installing SP1 on that - sound drivers needed to be reinstalled.

Or try running the command:

sfc /scannow

to check the system files. This has been reported to fix some sound problems.

Mick
