Hi
Hope you can help. I am being seconded for 3 months to the Preston/Chorley area of Lancashire and want to find a nice, singer-friendly club to go to during the week. I have looked at 'Folk North West' and can see there are quite a few, but would love some 'insider' information! I am only around Monday to Thursday - which clubs would you recommend?

Check the http://www.bothyfolkclub.co.uk/ Diary pages. It's a Sunday club, so may not be of direct interest to you, but they list a wide range of clubs around the North-West.

The Four Fools Folk Club (Mondays, monthly?) near Standish welcomes singers and musicians, even on guest nights.

Tony Gibbons and the company at Maghull Folk Club (Tuesdays) are friendly and welcoming.

Gregson Lane (Thursdays) I haven't been to yet (clashes with Fleetwood Folk Club, home base for me, always welcomes new voices but possibly outside your travelling range).

Also west of Preston is the Clarence in Blackpool (Wednesdays) with occasional singers nights (guest nights draw on the local residents for support, so no "floor spots" available).

If you can stretch to arriving on a Sunday, the Bothy itself is worth a visit. And if you can stretch to staying on for a Friday night, the Moorbrook (Garstang Road, Preston) has a fine song and music session.

We go to Four Fools at the Crown, Worthington. It's a great club - very friendly with both singers and musicians welcome. Angie runs it as a sing/playaround so that everyone who wants to perform gets a turn, rather than having to wait for your name to be called (don't know about you, but that makes me more nervous!)
If you fancy coming along, you would be really welcome - 8.15 on a Monday evening. (That's the same for anyone, not just Kathryn)

As an extra to the Bothy in Southport. We have a (mainly) music session at 'The Guest House', Union St, Southport. On the 3rd Monday of the month & (at present) a (mainly) singing session at the same venue on the 1st Monday of the month.Check the website for any changes.In addition to the normal Sunday club nights there are a couple of 'Thursday Specials' planned. The 1st being on the 25th Feb which is a CD launch by Liverpool singer / songwriter Lizzie Nunnnery, and the second is a blast form the past with 70's contemporary legends Bridget St John & Michael Chapman.

I can only endorse what Bar'bry and others have said. You would receive a very warm welcome any Monday evening at the Four Fools FOlk Club at the Crown at Worthington. The Crown is a Camra Pub of the Year and has some great ales, also great food. We are a really friendly bunch of people who greatly enjoy meeting new people and hearing them sing/play, and also welcome audience. Start time 8.15. Come and join us.

Yup - the Crown at Worthington is good - I dropped in there about almost a year ago and enjoyed the session. Also a friendly crowd at Wigan Folk club.

I think there is a monthly club, on a Tuesday, at Limbrick, Chorley but I cannot find any deatils. I believe it is, or was, traditional and very good indeed.

Sadly, after almost 10 years of being the best, the Limbrick Nights have folded. Old story, change of landlords, failure to find a suitable venue to keep people together, etc. The only places I get a song round here are The Crown at Worthington (WN1 2XF) every Monday and the Dressers at Wheelton (just off A674) every Sunday. The more, the Merrier. -- SID

Sorry to hear that. Sid. Ged always said he would take me one night when he picked up Ted but I never got around to arranging it. Looks like I missed a good un:-(

I really must get to the Crown one night as well. It used to be our 'works canteen' whan I worked for Logitek (Under the railway bridge towards Standish - First building on the left) and it was one of my favourite pubs. Do they still do food and a good selection of real ales?

On Wednesdays there is Coppull Folk as the Alison Arms on Preston Road at 9pm. A little less traditional in flavour than Four Fools. Both are great fun and close to Chorley. If you get as far as Wigan there are singarounds Tuesday and Thursday and a ukelele club on Wednesdays.

There are lots of very enthusiastic music in the area, I'm sure you'll get a great welcome wherever you go.

I'd still go myself if it wasn't so far from Nova Scotia.
