Yesterday we bought a lovely new pink KAOSSILATOR which Korg describe as a Dynamic Phrase Synthesiser. Hold it in your palm and intuit loops, grooves, drones, chords, ambience, solo lines & other such joyful noise in multi-tracked looping layered jams.

Check out the official demo:

At £100+ it's not going to break the bank (I know this contradicts what I said on the Cheap Keyboard thread but in terms of our general budget I still say it's hardly cheap); the ultimate in portability, although it does require an amp (we use a Roland Micro Cube which is also very portable) and it's very Folk / Post-Folk friendly - you can programme it to play in a number of modes (Dorian, Lydian, Pelog, Whole-tone etc.) & raga scales. Above all - Great Fun for musicians & non-musicians alike. From the results thus far I can see us using this in singarounds, sessions & gigs as the ideal thing to accompany E. Trads & Traditional Balladry, so - watch this space!

Anyone else got one yet????

They are great fun, will lead you into all sorts of unexpected creative directions and drive the more rigidly minded traditionalists into foaming fits of rage if you actually use it to accompany something from the sacred canon of Sharp and Co.
I'd like to hear it though.

Perhaps this has changed since they came out, but I decided against it because you can't save or upload/download. I've since acquired a widget for my iTouch called iSyn that has the same Kaosillator functions, and cost about $4. I use it almost exclusively in various and sundry waiting rooms, with the headsets on, of course.

For that sort of thing you spend the extra cash for the Kaossilator Pro! As it stands, I'm finding the Kaossilator ideal for song accompaniment - & no need to save anything because it's easy to set up and get into the groove. The perfect folk instrument as it uses a vocabulary based on Popular Music Traditions of the last 20 years or so - and it's great with the fiddle too!
