Subject: RE: Low Anthem - rather odd if you ask me From: GUEST,Spleen Cringe Date: 12 Feb 10 - 09:52 AM I've got a copy of their "OH MY GOD, CHARLIE DARWIN" album (great title, by the way). I quite like it. It's far from being the best alt-country/americana album I've heard (I'd reserve that for Smog, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, the Walkabouts, Uncle Tupelo, the Scud Mountain Boys, the Handsome Family and a few others) but it has a few great songs nicely done. My main problem is that it has such an irreconcilable split personality as an album - either low-key, maudlin, introspective songs or rootsy, Creedence-style rockers with little continuity between the two styles. In fact it could be two different bands. Fair play to them for not putting all their eggs in one basket, but at least they could have put both baskets in the same room... Having said that, the good definitely outweighs the not-so-good. Here's their Myspace: Low Anthem |

I've heard them in a small venue (coffeehouse in church hall) and a large venue (Newport Folk Festival). It's true that they write and play a variety of musical styles. Each vocalist is also a multi-instrumental musician and they trade instruments onstage. |
