Kicking the bucket down the road, more like...all this Glorious Dead stuff. OK, perhaps it's not quite so blatant now, but can you tell me there really isn't any of it in all of this? Squaddies collecting for poppies, digging into the sense of duty which lets politicians get away with causing wars. If it's "Let's not go there again" then why isn't it being said? We're still in the land of "Dulci et decorum est", unless it's being positively said otherwise.
And yes, I spent more than a few years taking serius responsibilities in the area. We tried teaching the military that policy is about peace. Somehow, I don't think they've really got it yet.

I should have added that the Director of Northern Broadsides, Barrie Rutter, commissioned the title song for An August Bank Holiday Lark from Mike Waterson.

Mike Waterson wrote it and recorded himself singing it. Barrie Rutter claims it as his final musical contribution. Scripts are available from Northern Broadsides.

And coming shortly to the Oldham Coliseum, Close the Coalhouse Door.

Northern Broadsides theatre company completed their tour of An August Bank Holiday Lark just last night.

It was written by Deborah McAndrew with the help of Saddleworth Morrismen. It followed the members of an east Lancashire rushcart procession in 1914, with a wonderful cast of eight dancers and four musicians.

On a simillar theme, Austin John Marshall wrote Whitsun Dance, set to the tune of The Week Before Easter.

Published in 1968 in Karl Dallas' Book The Cruel Wars, it was sung by Shirley Collins as part of the Anthems in Eden Suite issued in July 1969.

I heard it on Radio 4 in early November 1992, about a week before Armistice Day (Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, I think). They credited Wheatley MM at the end.

With the recent talk of BBC dramas I remembered a radio drama with the above title. A quick search has reveled that I have mentioned it here before, once, it was a John Kirkpatrick project and very little else:-( Does anyone have a recording of it or know how I may be able to get one?
