AND guess who is on the front cover?

NuCeilidh and
Silent Folkin' Disco.
Seems like the locals will get a bit of respite from the interminable volume. For one night. AND those wot want deaf-aids in 20 years time, will get their wish.

OK. My favourite will be (hard choices but) - Mr Gubbins Bicycle , fronted by a notsominor deity.

What are you looking forward to?

Hi Mr Red.

Thought you might like that picture. :) But as the big mailout of the flyer takes place this weekend, only people who were at Cheltenham Folk Festival have seen it so far!

Just to clarify: NuCeilidh is not silent. Silent Disco and Ceilidh both take place at the Bulveron on Sunday 1 August. But at the Blackmore Gardens Dance Marquee, we're having two nights of NuCeilidh, which is like a combination of the best bits of social dance (more challenging dances) with the best bits of ceilidh (energy and exciting bands).

I will be interested to hear what you think once you've tried it!

Sounds like poncy dances with a drum kit.

Well, the only way to find out what it's like is, of course, to come along. :)

Hmmmmm - I have been known to do squares and contra, arguably more of them at Sidmouth (& IVFDF).
As a Barn Dance tart - I am pretty open about styles. I am sure I will be there. Is NuCeilidh another word for Zesty Contra?
I still advocate Horses' Brawle, not a bit challenging IMNSHO, but very inclusive of single people and not too number dependant. And I like the tune.
About the only genre I find challenging is the Eurobash, not because I can't dance Mazurkas (eg) but because the lack of guidance means most people around you are doing different things at different speeds needing different safety margins. I can foresee collisions when everyone is Polkaing (usually).

Well at least we can discuss NuCeilidh unfettered on this forum. (Almost).

You may have noticed, Mr Red, that I am not a dancer (I dropped off my leaflets and scarpered on Friday night). But I am working with the festival's ceilidh and social dance advisers to develop the idea, as well as bringing a completely new approach to our ceilidh band workshops and providing a Calling Academy (Cat Kelly is one of our ceilidh advisers).

All in all we are trying to approach the participative dance provision in a more unified way, and thinking through ways of making it as good as it can be.

At the moment, it looks like Mr Gubbins' Bicycle and Belshazzar's Feast will be involved in the NuCeilidh dances.

"we're having two nights of NuCeilidh, which is like a combination of the best bits of social dance with the best bits of ceilidh "

I like the sound of this.

Social dance used to be lively, with stepping, and done largely by young people. Much of that has been lost as it's drifted towards an older person's activity and the younger people have gone elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see how it's pitched - in a club it's not unknown to do the same dance two or three times to get it right, which wouldn't work for a ceilidh, but it's no fun a ceilidh to spend a whole dance just playing catch-up to what you should be doing next.

Are the bands/callers lined up or do we have to wait for the flyer? And are workshops being offered?

Malcolm
I've booked the hol, suppose I'd better fill out the stewarding application :-)

Cookie reset - I'm officially me again.

"About the only genre I find challenging is the Eurobash, not because I can't dance Mazurkas (eg) but because the lack of guidance means most people around you are doing different things at different speeds needing different safety margins"

There was a very good workshop - Kerry somebody? a couple of years ago, I wouldn't mind a few more Euro-ish workshops. Would help to enjoy the dances more.

Malcolm

You have no chance, Mr R. As soon as Ruthie appears and the magic word 'Sidmouth' is uttered you know there will be trouble:-)

And for what it's worth - I can't dance a Mousaka either...

:D (eG)

That'll be Kerry Fletcher, an excellent dance tutor of French, Scandinavian, and no doubt a whole lot more styles as well.

I was going to suggest it was probably Kerry Fletcher. She's great, and we'll definitely be asking her along again this year.

I last saw her teaching clog workshops at the Bellowhead new year's eve bash at the South Bank, dressed in a sailor suit! :)

Exuberant dancer. Great teacher. Learnt her Scandinavian skills from the best people in Sweden, 20 years ago.
Now....Wheres my gig??!

Kerry did the Fandango workshop last year. Hmmmmm, can't remember a thing from it. Muscle memory? Not with my muscles.
And the she explained that lasso bouree at Towersey, now that I can do.
And curiously only weeks later we did almost the identical moves in an Appalation w/s at the Didmarton Festival (superb little event if you like Bluegrass or Máire Ní Chathasaigh and Chris Newman playing anything from blues to Irish, via B/grass)

Speaking of leaflets...if any of the lovely people turning up for the Middle Bar reunion this weekend fancies a couple of hours of envelope stuffing on Saturday or Sunday, they'd be very welcome. PM me if you'd like to help.

Thanks!

Er!!

It is probably quite well known that a number of the usual suspects will be in Sidmouth this weekend.

Any chance of the Flyer being available in the Anchor and Radway?

Dave

Ruth - maybe we could do some envelope stuffing in the Anchor? (It would remind me of folding Fylde leaflets in the Dove for Alan Bell during folk weeks!)

I'm looking forward to finding out where and when Ethel's Cats are playing - not because I think it's a cool name for a band, but because I'm in it!!!
