There WILL be a monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session at the Press Room in Porstmouth NH this Sat., 20 Feb. from 3:30 to 7?30 PM. Too much glare on the keyboard and I'm too tired to write more.

See you on Saturday - Tom

I'll be there, too. Alas, I won't be at the Friday session because I have to work, but I'll see Paul & Greg from Albany on Saturday.

There's a rumor Tim Radford may drive up, too.

Just got home.

It was another really nice session. There were some new singers there, and a few regular attendees from way out of town, in addition to the regular local crowd. Some really nice harmonies generated. But I'm too bushed to say much more now.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Well, it's a new and brighter day. Let's see. Who was in attendance for musicians?

Myself and JudyB from Maine
Tom and Linn
Mark
Paul (from Albany area)
Emory
Jeri
Dave Coffin, daughter, and friend
Alex
Marty
Tim Radford
Bruce
Jeff W.
BarbaraB

And another eight or so people who were singing along or listening.

I wasn't keeping track of what songs were being sung by others very well but the songs I led included:

Fire Maringo (traditional)
Mobile Bay (C. Fox Smith)
Dramamine (Talitha MacKenzie)
Clan Alpine (Ron Baxter)
Lumber (C. Fox Smith)

Nice to see so much energy, and as I've mentioned above, such rich harmonies.

Tim certainly brought some less familiar songs to the session.

We had a nice dinner with Paul and Marty afterwards at Ricardi's, just up the street a few blocks. No additional songs but it was fun to just get to know one another better.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

That's --
Charlie Ipcar and JudyB from Maine
Tom and Linn
Mark Ryer
Paul Schurr (from Albany area)
Emery Hutchins
Jeri
Dave Coffin, daughter Linnea, and Kent Allyn
Scott Bogle (who's been AWOL for awhile -- good to have him back!)
Marty Stock
Tim Radford
Bruce MacIntyre
Jeff Warner
Barbara Benn

Lovely session! Good new songs -- good old ones -- good new versions. Nice to see Scott back -- he's been using marriage and starting a family as an excuse for way too long. Really nice to have such great singers from a distance make it to the same session.

I made a list of what was sung, but I can't remember what Mark's first song was (right after Tom started the session with "Fisherman's Hornpipe").

I was going to try out ("brucing" it, as it's sort of memorized but iffy at this point) "Sixteen Tons of Herring Roe" (thanks to Rika), but I was intimidated by the company -- didn't want to "practice" in front of such talent.

But I DID sing "Sandgate Girl's Lament", "Ten Stone" (along with Jeri), "Astoria's Bar", "Race of Long Ago" and started "Nine Times a Night", but then my voice gave out and I decided not to push it -- I have to talk for two for the next couple days.

Linn-

Thanks for the clarifications and corrections of the names I listed.

You and Jeri did a nice job of sharing "Ten Stone."

We were discussing at dinner how supportive people generally were when someone leads a song in a key that's too high or too low, all those fingers pointing up or down is such a comfort! ;~)

I did the previously mentioned Ten Stone with Linn, Fire Down Below, and Black Bird. I had a great time. David and Linnea did 'The Reach', and there was as close to complete silence as it gets in the Press Room. It was a session I don't ever want to forget.

When we're good, we're very good!

I really love to listen to whatever Emery sings. He's got that rare quality as a singer that all his songs are "old friends." He probably spends some time working them up but it's certainly not obvious.

Linnea, David, and Kent performed the beautiful and timeless Wynken and Blynken and Nod for us. And, I find David has generously offered a download of it, free, on his web site:
WynkenBlynkenNod

I'll see if I can post some photos on Facebook soon, and link them here.

What a warm-hearted, fine session that was!

Once again the two nights at the Press Room were more than worth the long drive from Albany. There were moments where the atmosphere created by the songs gave that wonderful buzz that makes you glad to be alive and convinced that there is no other place you'd rather be. Good music, good friends, and good beer -- what a fine recipe. As I read down the list of Saturday's attendees, I realized that each one had contributed to the tapestry we created together. As usual, who will be there and what will be sung is always a surprise and part of the fun. I think this session was way above average, but I'm going to keep sampling as often as I can get there.

It was truly a wonderful session. They're all good (can't remember one that wasn't) but sometimes magic does happen -- always different.

Tom missed the second half of the session (although I filled him in later) -- maybe by the session next month when his defib battery will have been replaced and he won't be soooooo dragged out, he'll again be there for the whole session.

And, just minutes ago I talked with Dr. Z after Tom's surgery this morning and things couldn't be much better in that regard, also. Dr. Z didn't start the restoration procedures, but the cancer is now GONE! And what he removed this morning, though it had grown since it was originally scheduled to be removed last December, grew OUT not into tissue and, here's the really lucky thing, it grew below the vocal cord, so Tom's left vocal cord is pretty much intact. Dr. Z also said that the area of the right vocal cord has healed amazingly well.

Everyone's prayers, white light, reduction candles, healing thoughts, etcet etcet are WORKING! Thank you, every one, so much!

Linn

Hi, Jon -- check the "Curmudgeon" thread below the line -- Tom's not out of the woods yet. I just got home, soaking wet, after a bus trip from Boston. Tom is still at Mass General and life is really up in the air right now.
