Hi,
Jochen Voit is about to launch a new biography of Ernst Busch entitled ' Er Ruhrte an dem Schlaf der Welt', ISBN 978-3- 351-02716-2, 24.95euros. The book is in German and is to be published on 14th March 2010. There have been several Mudcat threads in which Ernst Busch and his singing of Spanish Civil War Songs has featured and so I bring the new biography to your attention in case anyone out there is interested enough to buy it. Ernst Busch was, as you may know, a strong anti-fascist who, upon the rise of Hitler to power, left his career as a famous German film star and singer and eventually went to Spain to entertain the Republican troops. He was responsible for collecting songs and arranging them for publication in book form as ' Canciones de las Brigadas Internacionales '. I do not have a web site address which would enable you to get further details but if I find that there is one I shall post it later.

Regards, Geoff Lawes

Try this: Erinnerungsort. Materialien zur Kulturgeschichte

A very interesting site, not least because of the numerous interviews with people who knew Ernst Busch. His career as an actor and singer of both entertainment and political songs was not ended by Hitler (though he barely escaped with his life). He moved to the GDR and was one of their most influential artists, working closely with people like Brecht and Hanns Eisler, till he fell out with the party and was sidelined in the Sixties.

Busch would have been 110 last January; his death occurred 30 years ago in June. He also took part in the German fleet's rising in Kiel that started the November 1918 revolution which ended the Kaiser's rule. We're hoping to present an exhibition on Busch's life in Kiel in November, including a reading by Jochen Voit from his biography if he is available.

Are there plans to publish an English translation of the biography?

There is a complete discography available.

The recordings of Spanish civil war songs have been continuously in print since the late 30's, and may be found on many CD reissues.

Many of Busch's other recordings have been re-released on CD:

Best wishes, Thomas.
