I am an elementary school teacher who is in charge of our annual dance festival where students perform different folkdances from different countries. While attending college I learned a stick dance from the transylvanian region of Romanian that my instructor called Joc Cu Sucatore. The instructor is no longer at that university and I can't locate the music. It's a fairly upbeat instrumental song. Please help me if you can.

Thanks

I've only got a couple of CDs of Romanian folk muic and it's not there.

I would bet it's in Bartok's five-volume collection of Rumanian folk music somewhere, if you can find a library that has it.

If you can't, become a member, send me a PM, and I'll look it up in a library here.

Jeff O'Connor at Humboldt State University taught this dance in 1995. He is still there and might be able to send you the music or give you some resources. I'm looking for the dance notes, as well as the music, and will be trying to get it from him during a visit soon. If I have any luck, I'll post. I want to teach it to my 6th grade class for a festival.

There is a video of Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances, all six, at youtube. The first is a stick dance, but is called Joc Cu Bata.

I got the music on my trip to Humboldt. If you give me your email address, I'll send it to you. Do you have the dance notes? I don't have them, but I think I remember it right. If you have the notes, however, I'd love a copy...it's been 15 years!

There is a video of Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances, all six, at youtube.

You're thinking of the ones he published as arrangements (violin/piano etc). What I was talking about was the posthumously published 5-volume collection "Rumanian Folk Music" (Indiana University, 1969), which contains hundreds of tunes. It's about the size of Bronson.

I've only seen it in Edinburgh University Library but many institutions must have copies.
