Subject: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 23 Feb 10 - 05:38 AM I have only just recently discovered Dan's songs and was blown away by Katie's Song which I added some photos to and put on Youtube after contacting Dan who said "do what you like with any of them" so I have! Katie's Song This led me to more of them which I think are great, so after fading the ends after Dan admitted he tends to turn the machine off too early at the finish, and converting them to Wav files I have made a CD containing 23 tracks which although would be regarded by some as not quite full blown studio quality, but which I think is good (I am biased), I am now the proud owner of a Dan O'Connell CD called "ORIGINALS Plus". If anyone is interested in a copy, let me know and I will send you one. I suspect Dan is going to be highly embarrassed by this but hey, you can't hide your light under a bushel forever! #1 Dan Fan. |

Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: olddude Date: 24 Feb 10 - 01:05 PM Well John you certainly surprised me with this thread. I am truly touched. I am just a dad who writes songs for his kids and his friends. I am delighted you like them ... Thank you, that was so kind of you John. I think many of the catters have some of the older songs I wrote for they were on the CD I sent out originally. I re-recorded them on soundclick because I am trying to get the production quality a bit better. My soundclick is my test site. I have 10 new song that no one has heard yet and I am waiting to get them polished up and will send them to anyone who wants them ... Music is just something we all have inside us that helps us get through the struggles of day to day life for sure. If it were not for the people of mudcat I would not have picked up the guitar again or even tried to write once more. Thank you God Bless Dan |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: wysiwyg Date: 24 Feb 10 - 02:42 PM I have to disagree with you there Dan. The music would have forced its way to some other way. You just can't keep a good gift locked up! ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 25 Feb 10 - 06:03 AM What "W.y.s.i.w.y.g" said. Well I can't wait to get hold of the new ones, and I know several others that will feel the same when they hear. Requests are coming in for the CD from all directions, and Dan, if you could pm me with your address I really would like to send you a copy of the printed disc and cover, and honestly it does NOT cost much at all to send so DON'T worry and let me send one, even if it's just to make this old man happy. :-) Meanwhile, keep up the good work. John |

Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: frogprince Date: 26 Feb 10 - 12:17 PM It sounds fine, but have 13 other people got to you yet to tell you that John Prine wrote the song some years ago? |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 26 Feb 10 - 12:34 PM Oops! No not yet you're the first and thanks for that, I will make the necessary changes right now. |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 26 Feb 10 - 12:42 PM I've just found a video of John Prine singing this song on youtube. It is a perfect song for Dan to sing. I must admit that I haven't heard the song before and I did enjoy watching the John Prine video as well. Dan does sing songs written by other people; just been listening to Dan singing Bonnie Ship the Diamond on soundclick :-) |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 26 Feb 10 - 12:51 PM Bonnie Ship the Diamond is one of them on the CD, which I did at least name aptly, "ORIGINALS Plus" as there are a few that are not originals like St James's Infirmary etc. But I love 'em all anyway. |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: olddude Date: 26 Feb 10 - 01:08 PM On my soundclick unless it has the word "original" it belongs to someone else. only the ones that I wrote "original" in the title is mine. Thanks so much ... sure do love John Prine |

Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: olddude Date: 26 Feb 10 - 01:31 PM also wrote the old picker which I dedicated to Art Thieme cause it is his time and Kendall, and Jacqui, and Dan that got the grammy nomination. It is their time for sure ... Like I said I just write and play for my friends and kids, those guys along with most of the other fine musicians here on the mudcat are the real deal ... |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: olddude Date: 26 Feb 10 - 01:37 PM Most of the catter's have heard these all before, they were on my cd called South Bound Train" I re-recorded them because I have been struggling trying to understand the whole "recording concept" and trying to get it as right as I can because I have a new CD of originals that I want to do a better job with when I complete it. I thank all of you for your help. You surprised me John and I do thank you very much and your video work is amazing. Dan |

Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: olddude Date: 01 Mar 10 - 12:37 PM that was cool John, great pictures. There is great story about the song that I told before on mudcat. I wrote it for popcorn sutton a famous moonshiner after he passed away. I never met the guy. Some of his friends heard it and sent me some great photos of Popcorn and told me they now play the song in their trucks when they make their illegal moonshine runs LOL |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: olddude Date: 01 Mar 10 - 12:38 PM its my only claim to fame, it is a hit with illegal moonshiners LOL I laugh everytime I think about it ... |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: olddude Date: 01 Mar 10 - 12:48 PM Popcorn really was a folk hero by any definition. I wish some of the fine writers here on the cat would write more songs about the guy. He is everything folk legends are about don't ya think ... what a character. I can't remember which one of our catters.. told me they had some of his "shine" and it really was the best |

Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 23 Mar 10 - 03:12 AM Just in case frogprince's comment above may have caused a bit of confusion. Anyone is welcome to a copy of the CD and there is NO charge, but if recipients feel that they would like to make a donation to Mudcat that's great, but not compulsory John |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: wysiwyg Date: 23 Mar 10 - 11:02 AM I have the "master" for sending US copies, to save John the US/UK postage, and I feel exactly the same way he does about "costs." I agree that no charge for copies is necessary, and that any donations to the Cat would be welcome but are not required. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: olddude Date: 23 Mar 10 - 02:47 PM anyone is free to copy my music for non sale purposes. I have only sold CDs as fund raisers for autistic kids ... never for me... anyone is free to perform any song I wrote. I only ask if you are going to record a song I wrote on a CD for sale that you ask me first. I have never told anyone no, can't see a time where I would but if I sold the rights to a song (haven't yet) I would not want to cause BMI issues. |
Subject: RE: Dan O'Connell (oldude) CD From: olddude Date: 23 Mar 10 - 10:17 PM My friend Bob Pickins did some background harmonies with me live a couple of weeks ago at a coffee shop here in town ...
