Nothing formal, but this coming weekend (Fri 26/ Sat 27 Feb) is the annual pilgrimage of the Swinton Hardy Intrepid Trecking Society - SHITS for short - To escape the fog smitten environs of Salford and undertake some Sheep s**ging in less lugubrious surroundings. This year, for the second or third running I think, it is once again the turn of the above hostelry to host this prestigious event. We have taken a bunk room and filled all the space with escapees from assorted assylums so we cannot offer any accomodation but we can offer songs, tunes and sparkling wit and repartee. Well, we find it funny. Well, we do after 17 pints...

Just thought I would let you know

:D (eG)

Best wishes and fraternal greetings from all at The Beech, Chorlton. Some of us will be at Ghyll Head looking across Windermere to The Old Man. And as I type, snow falls in Chorlton

Old Man of Coniston - Highest point in Lancashire, Les, and don't let anyone tell you it is now in Cumbria:-) Definitely best viewed from the Ghyll Head or any other warm hostelry at this time of year:-) We did Whernside last year (Photies on Facebook) but have a lower level walk planned this time.

Have a good 'un - Saturday night - 8pm - raise a mutual pint across the miles?

Cheers

DeG

Unfortunately I've got other stuff on this weekend or I'd be joining you. I'll definitely be interested if you do it again - obviously the sooner I know the better.

If anyone's interested, Sally the Lemonade Lady is running another of her excellent weekends at the Salwey Arms, near Ludlow, over the weekend of 5-7th March.

Will do, Don. Next time John!

Looks like we are going to get wet! At least we have planned for that and tomorrow we are probably only doing 6/7 miles on a low-level circular to Chapel-le-Dale. Never know - may end up in the hill Inn for lunch with a bit of luck:-)

Hiya,
Just been on the BBC site, the weather for the Ribblehead area tomorrow is Cloudy with sunny spells with a tropical day time temprature of +4c dipping down to -2c at night, followed by a similiar day on Sunday, so it's a strong chance I'll be there (won't be till 7.30pm on Sat.though)

Cheers

Well, we're back from a spledid weekend. We had a good sing and play on Friday and a short-ish but very pleasant walk on Saturday followed by a magnificent evening.

As well as our lot there was a birthday bash with their own musicians. We had, effectively, two folk club singing and playing sessions going simultaneously. Guitars galore, fiddle, concertinas, melodeon and a percussion section with bongos, washboard and an assortment of things that boinked and tinkled!

An amazingly broad range of music from Morris tunes to Bob Marley with everything between, including a selection of eclectic compositions from Muppett - Who it was great to meet! The whole room was bouncing. Men and women of all ages, children, dogs - Everyone having a thourougly good time and I must make a special mention of the dancing girls:-)

Cheers

Forgot to add that the birthday do was populated by people from, in the main, Yorkshire. while ours was from Lancashire. Made for some interesting friendly banter about largese:-)

Oh, and I must add the joke of the weekend. Thanks Steve:-) Nothing to do with Lancs and Yorks, just the way my brain works...

Man in free-fall wwhen he discovers neither his main or reservce parachutes work. As he prepares to meet his maker he sees another man heading in the opposite direction - upwards! In a final act of desperation he shouts, "Know anything about parachute?"

"No," came the reply, "Know anything about gas cookers?"

Hiya David, good to meet up with you and yer mates, and to meet up with Bill, Tracey and co. as well wasn't expecting to see them for at least another 6 weeks or so.

It was a grand night / morning and I found enough energy to walk the next day over the fells to Buckden and then have another brill session in the Taps in Ilkley in the eve.

I'm at work now (dinner break)and a little tired now though.

Cheers

Muppett

That's a fair old trek, Muppett. How many miles? Looking at the map I would guess you followed the Dales Way?

Glad you made it anyroads.

Hiya,
Acording to me pedometer it was a few steps short of 15 miles (made it up to 15 miles though by walking upto the bar a few times in the Buck Inn at the finish of the walk whilst waiting for the bus).

Yep I followed the Dales way most the way

Puts our 6 or so miles to shame but my excuse is that I am a fat bastard:-) In defense I can say that I have done my share of 20+ milers when I was younger!

I have been contemplating for many years now doing the walk described in Mr Fox's 'The Gypsy' which takes in Wharfedale and Langsthrothdale - There is a thread about it just been resurrected. Rather than do it in the two days that the 'hero' of the song takes I would propose a more gentile 5 or so though:-)

Muppett

Would you be the same "Muppett" who joined my mate Dave and me entertaining the crowd in the barn on the Sunday afternoon of Headcorn's weekend at Appledore in Kent on 12 June 1983? (the date is exact as I met my wife the day before)

I've been in the George but never to a session there. Only pub I know that cannot serve it's own water as it is not passed as fit for human consumption! Don't worry - They have a water supply it is just not certified so they have to serve bottled drinking water:-) Same in the B&B down the road.

Ribblehead to Dymchurch under the Wall - Now that WOULD be a hell of a rail journey. Start in the Settle-Carlise and finish on the Romney-Hythe-Dymchurch. Wonder how many spectacular lines you could fit in between? And if you could sing on the trains and be met by Mr Mipps:-)

From the Dymchurch website -

Dymchurch holds it's Days of Syn pageant bi-annually during the August Bank holiday weekend.

Cheers
