This was one of my summer holiday reads. It's a great book, well written and even if you don't necessarily agreed with all Will H's opinions or conclusions, it's consistently entertaining and thought provoking. Most importantly, his love of the music he covers comes through very strongly.

I'm reading the book now, it's a very good read.
When I've finished it, I'll listen to the CD again.

There is a Ballad of Britain Website: http://www.theballadofbritain.com/

.. and a (rather annoyingly illegible, but with good recordings) Ballad of Britain MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/theballadofbritain

In addition to producing his excellent and surprising book, an old-Astra journey around England and woods and sessions and fields andmusic, Will Hodgkinson also collected recordings from the folk (and sheep) that he met along the way. They're a fascinating listen, I think, whimsical but essential, and they do illuminate something about music now.

A great collection, available from Heron Recordings in a lovely cardboard sleeve, and with excellent notes, but should really be listened to in connection with the book.

Anyone partaken of either? What did you think?
