I believe it was a Scot who invented the chronometer. Up until his time they had no idea about longitude.

Burke and Hare were Irish immigrants. There was a book a few years ago by Owen Dudley Edwards which took on the unlikely task of defending Burke as a misunderstood victim of anti-Irish prejudice.
