Nowt wrong with bottle beer, Conrad - in my native Tyneside we drink bottled Newcastle Brown Ale in preference to many draught beers, a tradition I carry with me the world o'er.

Let me het this right. You think that bottled beer is not 'folkie' for some strange reason and think it should be banned at folk events?

I have seen some strange arguments on here but that round about takes the biscuit. I am not even going to explain why and on how many levels that is wrong! Whoever came up with that idea is obviously not a full shilling...

There are plenty of wonderful bottle conditioned European beers. Far better in fact than some of the swill available on tap. most of the smaller breweries in the UK do a range of lovely bottled beers - stouts, porters, ruby milds, IPAs, honey beers, winter ales etc etc. Very few pubs could stock such a wide range on tap.

Just out of interst (and I know I shouldn't) why do you think bottled beer is "wrong" for "folk venues"? Do you think they might encourage dressing up and using napkins? Sounds like Morris Dancing to me...

Most beers (the sort usually called "real ale") are better served under gravity, and are too fizzy out of a bottle, but bottled beer is better than things like "John Smith's Smooth" or most normal pub lagers.

If I were to go out for a beer at 4 pm every Sunday it would be a "regular beer".

You can buy a range of Bateman's beers, relabelled Aldi, for £1.13p a pint and very nice they are. Compared to some of the stuff I've been sold from a beer tap for three quid, bottled beer makes sense. All things being equal a pint from a barrel is better.

Ah !! Newky Brown. Nowt wrong with that. generally I do prefer draught beer but there are some bottles that I enjoy for a change.

I used to work in Scotland and I enjoyed Youngers Double Century Ale again on occasions rather as first choice.

Not seen it around recently.

I used to drink quite a bit of Newky Brown before I moved to Tyneside - it seemed to have less body in its home town. As for another of S&N's Newcastle products, it was nearly enough to make me an ex beer drinker.

The bonus was that in England I could get Lorimer's.

There's no such thing as bad beer.........some are just worse than others.

With regard to bottle versus draught , I suppose that once bottled it is difficult to meddle or not care for it correctly.

Some time ago in my local the landlord changed and the newcomer tarted up the pub but the beer was b....y awful.

Then one night we came in and the beer was on form....one wag at the bar enquired " Did someone break in last night and clean out the pipes??"

As for the question in the thread....as John McEnrow used to say " You can't be serious".

The beer "down under" is like frozen gnatspee so a bottle of decent British ale is very welcome.
If there isn't any good beer at a venue then bottled half decent is fine.

This is alarming

Beer contains female hormones! Yes, that's right, FEMALE hormones!

April2009, Sydney University and scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer.

Men should take a concerned look at their beer consumption.

The theory is that beer contains female hormones (hops contain Phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women .

To test the theory, 100 men each drank 8 schooners of beer within a one (1) hour period.

It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects, yes, 100% of all these men:-

1) Argued over nothing.

2) Refused to apologize when obviously wrong.

3) Gained weight.

4) Talked excessively without making sense.

5) Became overly emotional

6) Couldn't drive.

7) Failed to think rationally, and

8) Had to sit down while urinating.

No further testing was considered necessary!!

3refs, you forgot to mention how it affects the sensory receptors that create an illusion and makes all women look beautiful and like models. As each pint is consumed, so the illusion improves.

"broon" (I have never heard neukey anywhere but usa) is available in any large draught beer oriented bar in Baltimore. Hardly a brew pub without it. But not as fresh as it could be as the price is higher than it should be so it sits for I think longer than it should another reason to eliminate price greed.

I find that bottled beer is far different animal than draught. I remember my first guinness. I got a bottle first thing when I got to london in the 70s from germany. Still can't stand bottled guinness and can't afford it at $6.00 - 7 a pint.

Unless it's bottle-conditioned, bottled beer is filtered, pasteurised and carbonated. This radically alters the flavour of the brew. If you like the taste, go for it, but the only bottled beer I'll drink is bottle-conditioned. Try Summer Lightning or any of the bottle-conditioned ones from Sharp's - Special Bitter, Single Brew Reserve or Chalky's Bite are all superb. If you visit the brewery shop you can even get bottle-conditioned Doom Bar which is far superior to the standard bottled Doom. A lot of supermarkets are selling Duvel in 330ml bottles for about £1.70 these days (it's over 8% so plenty of wallop for yer dosh) which is a silly price for such a brilliant brew.

Actually I looked into getting a keg of woodchuck and found it terribly terribly expensive. Outrageously expensive. One would think they would like it to become more popular. I was going to serve it via the tap on my apple and eve art truck last summer.
