NORTH CAROLINA SONG & SOCIETY WORKSHOP

Saturday 22nd. May 2010
10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m.
Elephant & Castle White Hill Lewes BN7 2DJ
Joe has inherited the song & storytelling traditions of his family in the North Carolina Appalachians, where he still lives & works. He plays guitar & banjo. His account of life in the small village of Sodom Laurel is fascinating & often surprising. The workshop will cover 'Old Love Songs & Ballads from the Western North Carolina Mountains' & the oral tradition that preserved them. Joe will tell the stories of the 'Keepers of the Old Songs' who passed them on to him. Photographs of the landscape & the singers, along with field recordings,
will paint a vivid portrait of life in this isolated part of America.
A work book with lyrics & information & a CD of field recordings will be provided for each participant.

This should be terrific--it's been wonderful to hear Joe at Whitby singing and talking about the Wallins and others.

I've just been listening to a beautiful rendition of "Crossing the Bar" on Mr. Penland's website, linked above.

Blush, stutter, mumble, I've put South instead of North Carolina in the thread title. Could a kindly elf please sort this out for me?

Geographically embarrassed,

Valmai

We still have day and evening places for this. Some people are coming quite a distance, from Scotland, Hampshire and the Home Counties. I think I've got that bit of geography right.

Valmai, I don't suppose it's possible for someone to pay for and get the cd and booklet by mail? I can't get there from here, and I'd love to learn more about Mr. Penland's songs.

Why do superb things like this always happen at the other end of the country?

An added incentive may be that the evening before, Friday 21st. May, the Copper Family are singing in aid of Christian Aid in Rottingdean. Tickets are £10 and the show starts at 8.00 p.m. Phone 01273 302611 for details.

More information and a map are on the Coppersongs website.

Ray: Ah ... bully your local organisers into doing something similar, or offer to help them do it ... it can't be difficult or we wouldn't be able to do it down here ... Come and see us one day, anyway.

Tootle pip,

Valmai

Thanks Valmai, and the others who did all the organizing work.

Really an excellent time: Joe evoked the world of the singers recorded on collections like 'High Atmosphere', 'Dark Holler' and 'Far in the Mountains' with great warmth, vividness and humour; his own stories and personal connections to those keepers of the old songs made that corner of North Carolina seem very close to Lewes.
