Search being down I can't find an older thread to add this to...

Terry Gross had the Carolina Chocolate Drops on Fresh Air on NPR -- a nice long interview. Clicky

There are links on that page to the nearly 45-minute audio, plus 3 whole tracks from their latest CD, "Genuine Negro Jig". Excerpts from the interview in text there, but not the whole thing.

I'm following you around the radio dial today. I heard about 1/2 of that interview, with stuff going on in the house this morning. I'll have to catch all of it online.

Weren't they incredible?!

I heard most of it also. Some great information got passed on about North Carolina fiddle styles and Joe Thompson, as well as just some darn good music lessons!

If you type "Carolina Chocolate Drops" into the Filter space and set the time for timespan desired, several threads will be brought up.

Great music, I agree.

I thought that Terry was wanting and not well informed about the lineage of black string-bands in the USA. Where these groups were not extensively recorded, there are many amazing and fine photographs in books over the years that illustrate the reality quite well. The Mississippi Sheiks, Martin, Bogan and Armstrong---many others.

I agree Art. But I thought the members of CCD did a good job of educating her.

Yes, Janie, you are correct. Personally, I've gotten tired of doing interviews with well-intentioned folks who had vary a clue of folk's last 50 years.

It is great to see this band doing it. As good as friend Sparky Rucker is, I was always sad seeing how few Afro- Americans looked into the revival and saw how it appreciated black participation all through the last century.

Audio and video (as Windows Media .wmv format) available of their appearance on the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour is on this page. It's episode 430. We caught it on a re-broadcast on "Blue Highways TV" on cable here in L.A., it will probably come around again, if you get that channel.

Of course, there's plenty more online on Google search for video of them. (Not just YouTube.)

Heard this interview on NPR, today, missed it the first time round. I enjoyed hearing what they had to say and, of course, their music.
