Saw him three times. He was the greatest. Can't believe he's been gone for nearly 30 years.

Yeah, well, you know, sometimes those friends make sure that new friends surround you, Dan.

Harry was a very special man, absolutely no doubt about that. He cared, and he cared deeply about people. I can see why he was so taken with you, my friend..because Harry spotted that same special gift in you too.

I don't really understand why I feel like crying when I listen to Harry sing his songs either, other than I miss that man so much...which is kinda strange, as the closest I ever got to him was seeing him in London that time, at the gig, shortly before it was his time to move on...

I've told you before how he lost his voice that night....it went completely, around half way through his set, so Harry sat down on the front of the stage and asked his audience to help him out, (in a whisper)....inviting them up on stage.

Up ran all these fellas, absolutely over the moon...and when Harry's brothers and the rest of his band started up, there were 'several Harry's' on the stage! :0) They were word perfect, diction perfect, intonation perfect.

Harry stood there, laughing!   They were all so good that he said he could retire and no-one would notice.

He was a man who understood human emotions in such depth. Such a wonderful storyteller..

'Mail Order Annie' had me in tears from the first time I heard it..The image of Annie sitting on that train, wondering who the hell was going to be meeting her, all those worries, fears, going through her head...terrifying..and there he was, this kind, gentle man, who opened his arms, and his heart, oh so gently to her. Suddenly, he didn't really care if she wasn't as pretty as he'd hoped, because he knew that wasn't important..and something in that ol' heart of his told him that Annie was the right woman for him..

I can still see them riding away from that station in the wagon, Annie's tears still rolling down, and his protective heart already starting to wrap itself around her as they went off to start their life together..that hard life, but one that would soon be filled with love and laughter....

And 'A Better Place To Be' is one of my favourites. But then, so many of Harry's songs are my 'favourites'.. :0)

'Anywhere' IS a better place to be when you feel so desperately alone, as those in Harry's song did. And that lovely line when the waitress says to him, through her tears...

"I wish that I was beautiful, or that you were halfway blind, and I wish I weren't so goddamn fat. I wish that you were mine...."

And he finally smiles, after telling her his sad story, one that had broken his heart, daring, perhaps, to let himself believe that possibly the woman he'd always wanted was standing right in front of him. I like to feel they lived their lives in absolute bliss, for the rest of their days.

I just miss Harry Chapin for so many reasons...

And of course, he wrote the story of my daughter, but I never knew it back then, long before she was born. The story of how children can be so damaged by those who want to 'educate' their way rather than teach children to learn in the way that is natural to them.

"You're son marches to the beat of a different drummer....."

'Flowers Are Red'

Well said, Lizzie - Lovely posting. Sorry to be surprised but it is far different from your usual gushy postings! Not being insulting here - honest - just giving praise where it is due:-)

I do not know his work, other than through the voices of others (Marie Little's version of 'Roses are red' for instamce), but you really brought the night alive to me. When and where was it? Before you had the kids and could get to concerts I guess:-)

I cannot get youtube at work but I will have a look when I get home.

Cheers

Dave
