Rumour has it that tenor banjo playing will soon be declared an Olympic Sport.

If you think about it it has all the attributes:

1. It is fiecely competitive
2. Physically demanding
3. Recognised and played all over the world
4. Associated with preformance enhancing substances
5. Lots of other things

i trust those on Mudcat with influence in these matters will use it .......... erm ........ as appropriate

The tenor banjo has been maligned. In the hands of a great artist, it is an expressive musical instrument not necessarily given to pyrotechnics.   I know of two considerable artists who have made this instrument sing well.

The equation with an Olympic Sport is truly insulting and shows ignorance.

It WILL be part of the Summer Olympics....the bad news is, it will be integrated with the hammer throw.

I just love to hear the tenor banjo played well.

So if they include that in the olympics, there will be something worth watching.

I hope Lonnie Donegan isn't looking down on this thread

I would propose Banjo Lugging as an Olympic sport -- using top-quality bluegrass banjos with bell bronze tone rings in their specially fitted Calton cases. You have to be seriously fit to carry one of those things at all, let alone upstairs, at speed.

Could give some respectability to playing the banjo, and stop those of us unfortunate to suffer this affliction from skulking around in dark corners. http://doodoowah.com/BanjoPlayersAnon.htm

Thank you Bernard, its often difficult to get the tenor of these short posts correct.

To paraphrase an old boss of mine: Everybody brings joy to this thread, some when they arrive and some when they leave

Nothing sounds better than a tenor banjo.................unless it's a chicken in a vacuum cleaner.

Wasn't that lady who won a GB gold medal sliding on a tenor banjo?

I am also waiting for a new cooker to be delivered. However, I think you have missed all the possibilities - The banjo could be an integral part of Kayaking - Hockey- badminton- tennis - use your imagination

Good one Pete, how about The New Modern Pentathalon:

Run 10K in clogs carrying a banjo, whilst singing all known verses of Famous Flower of Serving Men, dance a solo jig from Bampton, succesfully call a Apron with special attention to original graces.

Now, that's what I call an Olympic event

Still no cooker
