Subject: Tune Req: Help with ABC notation
From: HiHo_Silver

Help Please; Can someone write this ABC notation into the proper note values so that it plays as a clog? I believe it is 6/8 time but I am unable to give the notes the proper time duration and bars to make it work out. If you need to add an extra note in places to make it more playable, feel free to do so. Thanks Jim

Oh bum, I've left it as 6/8 when it should be 4/4.

If I just change it to 4/4 in your 5:53 PM Message, will that work, Chris? It sounds pretty good, but I don't know a clog from a sneaker....

To play or display ABC tunes, try concertina.net

Or try Jon Freeman's superior ABC Converter

Thanks so very much for your efforts Chris. The Tune comes out fairly accurate but not exactly correct. This could be the fault of myself or the ABC player. I use ABCNavigator 2 and have noticed erors in the playing of other tunes from the actual notation. I will have to check the notation. Perhaps I did not post the notes quite correctly. I am a self taught musician with a limited knowledge of music notation and play mostly by ear. I was not able to get the note values even close. I believe I can now edit the tune to get it to play correctly. If and when I do, I will repost it here. Once again a sincere thanks for your efforts. Jim

Using the folkinfo.org online abc converter then playing the generated MIDI files back with free players ( Notation Player ), ( vanbasco's karaoke player ) the tempo seemed too slow. It sounded better with the Q: value set to 120.

I don't think the last bar or two in part 1 is quite right, it doesn't have the usual final cadence you get in hornpipes. (I've never seen this written down before and haven't heard it for a few years, so I'm not going to try fixing it myself).

Yes, the speed of Q:1/4 [or 1/n] in abc2midi (which the converters apparently use) works differently depending on the time signature, quite why I don't know, though it was explained to me once.
For M:4/4 it needs changing to Q:1/4=120 or Q:1/2=60 exactly as Geoff the Duck suggests.
As for whether I've got the last bar or two of part 1 or anything else quite right, hey, I'm only the messenger.
