Subject: Lower Coke Sun 21 Mar
From: Richard Bridge
Date: 05 Mar 10 - 10:07 AM

The last* of the Lower Coke Winter sings this year         Sun 21 Mar.

(* - it might not be the last, I am still trying to decide whether there willbe ne in April)

From opening time (noon) until closing time or earlier surrender to darts matches, darts competitions for the Sunday joint (meat, what else might I have meant?) foolsball on the square eyed God - usually till about 6-ish or 7-ish on March 21st.

The Nag's Head, Lower Stoke, Near Rochester, Kent, ME3 9RD.

Promises of a real ale, real fire, roast spuds, maybe some Yorkshire puds and little not-sausage rolls, all fit for vegetarians.

Great acoustics thanks to the wood floor.

If I like you selected invitees may, in my discretion, receive squidge in my gaff over the road on termination. Squidge comes in variants. Basically there will be veggie (actually I mean Vegan for the real fanatics) stoo, a meat stoo and a hot pepper sauce to turn either the meat stoo or the Vegan stoo into dragon fuel - stand back and strike match (at either end). At least that is the plan. Remember I have a dog and my lodger has a cat, so allergenists may be discommoded.

You will then kindly please F orf to assist me to be unpleasant at work on Monday.

Right... have told the main Fab Club p.a. person that we won't be at Grays on that afternoon. (Len is assistant p.a. person). Anyway it's Jim Bainbridge, who we have booked for the previous Friday in Orpington. So you will have two leopards in attendance but no cub.

This is starting to sound like VT's song about the 14, er, no, wait, was it 12 or 10, apostles and the 3 seasons and 6 fingers, no hang on, they were the gospel writers...for the mathematically challenged!

6 fingers?.....That's Dungeness, isn't it?

I'll be there!

5 and 7.....If you wait a while, you sometimes get two for the price of one.

I should prefer it. I am becoming increasingly concerned about the Mudcat.

If you do:

1. Go to gmx and get a discardable email address.
2. Use a false name that only friends will recognise you by, possibly a reference from a song you are known for.
3. Do not put up a picture, or use one of a camel or something.
4. Max out all your privacy settings.
5. Accept "Friend" requests only from identities that you are sure are really the people they purport to be and whom you know and trust.

If we all carry out steps 1-4 the step 5 is impossible as there will be a load of false names with animal faces so how do we know whether to accept the friend request or not?

Dear Riyad Rover

You use a known email (or mudcat PM) to ask the user if the Fakebook ident is him her or it. Doh!

Or you wait until you meet the person (for example in the pool of the hotel Triton, Torremolinos, doing the breaststroke) and ask.

Or you message on Fakebook to ask for a detail that you hope only you and the "Friend"'s real identity knows.

Lots of ways.

Is Faceache really the most efficient way of disseminating information? I'm rather reluctant to waste time on the thing unless it's absolutely necessary; it sounds more trouble than it's worth. And I've got things to do, people to see and songs to sing, you know! :)

I'm not completely sure why you don't want to use Mudcat, Richard, though I have my suspicions! PM me if appropriate.

Herewith my post starting the LC WS Freds this year: -

Subject: Lower Coke Winter sings (Kent, UK)
From: Richard Bridge - PM
Date: 05 Jan 10 - 06:58 PM

OK, after much blandishment, and Paddy and the landlord Peter both having bribed me with alcohol, and having taken due account of the risk of re-appearing on the 'cat, here is the eagerly awaited announcement of the Lower Coke (Upper Dogsbotham) winter sings, on the ground that no-one else appears to be doing anything competitive. Folkies do not compete, they co-exist. It is the music of the people.

Right. Here is the plan.

From opening time until closing time or earlier surrender to darts matches, darts competitions for the Sunday joint (meat, what else might I have meant?) foolsball on the square eyed God - usually till about 6-ish or 7-ish on the following Sundays: -

Jan 31
Feb 28
Mar 21.

Where? Oh, silly me! The Nag's Head, Lower Stoke, Near Rochester, Kent, ME3 9RD. It's in Hogarth's diaries doncher kno?

Promises of a real fire (maybe 2), roast spuds, maybe some Yorkshire puds, proper beer under gravity on the bar, and great acoustics thanks to the wood floor. NB if you have specific real beer requests for Kentish Beers or Beers of Kent, PM me URGENTLY as beer arrangements are likely to occur on Monday 11 Jan. Beer ties being what they are suggestions for non-Sheps beers will be treated confidentially, hint, hint.

If I like you selected invitees may, in my discretion, receive squidge in my gaff over the road on termination. Squidge comes in variants. Basically there will be veggie (actually I mean Vegan for the real fanatics) stoo, plus the adjuncts to vary it: there may be a pot of meat stuff to turn the meat into meat stoo, and a pot of very peppery and chilified stuff to turn either the meat stoo or the Vegan stoo into dragon fuel – stand back and strike match (at either end). At least that is the plan. Remember I have a dog and my lodger has a cat, so allergenists may be discommoded.

You will then kindly please F orf to assist me to be unpleasant at work on Monday.

Paddy is back in the village and may bring his banjo, so please encourage him. I propose to message Jeff, perhaps the best serial murderer on the clawhammer guitar in the county. I have just tonight met a traveller who may invite some of the local travelling families who remember the old songs to come (this is a long shot, I have been after one of the Rai to come and sing old songs for some time, to no avail – he prefers Elvis.)

All guarantees warranties and/or conditions and/or innominate terms, express or implied, whether statutory or otherwise, save as expressed above are hereby excluded. I accept no liability of any kind or nature whatsoever.

Any attendee by act or omission causing any actual or alleged damage or liability to me will on demand keep and hold me fully and effectually indemnified against any cost claim or liability of any nature whatsoever arising out of the event or their attendance.

I can keep exclusion clauses up for hours. All of them apply."

Read my lips: there never ever was a 28th date. it was always the 21st. Back to school and detention for the lot of you!

I am tickled that the parish council has formally written to Peter the landlord to complain that someone had flyposted the village. I wonder who might have done that?

I am not the only one who got the impression re 28th March?
Having said that I think the confusion may come from last years lower stokes events.
It does not matter. Who cares so long has its happens. Pissed off re missing it last time due to thoughtless sister. Dont wanna miss this one.

I think its more of a concern that someone complained about flyers in the village.
Dead horse I love your humor. But having lived in a village for much of my married life I put the flyers issue down to the saying thats "It Takes all sorts.

I am glad to say that the fakebook group now has 18 members (some of whom have not got members, if you get my drift) but that is still not a full house.

So if there is anyone you know on Fakebook who ought to be a member please point them in the right direction. So to speak.

Maybe we should consider a summer folcecue with open mic this year - to give a certain MEMBER a chance to wear his mankini.

I am only mildly miffed with the parish council. And the reason is that I would have thought they might prefer nice quiet folkies in the Nags than rowdy pillocks. Ho hum.

Hoping for a good turnout on the 21st. Maybe we can have a straw poll about whether there should be one in April (maybe the 18th, does anyone know what else is on in April?) when we see what sort of turnout we have this time. I was a bit disappointed at the last one, and the barrel of beer seemed to linger on in the pub for ever. We have to do most of that barrel in if we want Peter to keep getting one specially for us.

For the last one, the weather was shite. I kinda prefer the slightly less packed vibe myself - even if it's not so good for the beer.

I'd like to see an April do...

April 18th almost coincides with St. Georges Day & FAF week, in case it's of any moment.

I have no lift arranged to get to the Nags and the thought of public transport on a sunday with possible engineering works on route with a bus replacement service .I think I would rather stick pins in me eyes. which may just keep me awake on route?

Has for replacement buses they go all round the world.
I went to Tonbridge Wells once on a bus replacement ,clean shaven.
Went via bloody Norway.
Time I got to my destination the event was finished and I had grown a f,,k... Beard. and I had the same Fiasco home again.

Perhaps as there is a stout on (and it has recently been plastic paddies night) we should especially encourage Irish songs this month?

Bags I "Step it out Mary" before Brian does it to the chord sequence of "Tales from a raggy tramline".

I might do "The Thieves of Peckham Rye too, unless the Leopards come and do it.

Who can do "The sick note"?

Hmmm.... I've always considered stout an English drink. Didn't it originate in England?

Also, in my experience, the best stouts are English (despite Guinness's multi-million pound advertising campaigns and market flooding!). Compare a pint of Goacher's Stout with a pint of nitrogen-charged Guinness, for example. No competition!

I'm already licking my lips over tomorrow's offering! Chugalug, chugalug!

Sorry - slight thread drift! I shall be singing as well as drinking tomorrow!

Absolutely not into stout. Hoping there will also be a bitter available, otherwise it's a mix of softs and coffee, which just might see me swinging from the light fittings.

I'm much more placid on beer.

I came on here for another purpose. I popped in to the pub to check the wares for tomorrow, but the beer is not yet on. A propos it is designated and "Irish Stout" by the brewers. I do not think there will be another beer on the (newly refurbished) handpumps but there will be bottled Nun's Pleasure (Bishop's Finger) and Focke F*cker (Spitfire) as well as yellow and brown fizzy drinks under pressure.

Did I get a shock? Peter the Landlord and Nova (his Rubens-esque lady friend) have become affianced to each other and are leaving the pub.

Just as I get them trained they go and I have to start on a new lot!

So let's make it a good send-off for them.

The Hot sauce is being made later tonight with red Scotch bonnets.

Since I can't get to evening gigs at the moment, I try to squeeze in every second at the daytime ones.

I'll be flying around on the Sweeps weekend, between Medway, Maidstone and Farningham.

Busy trying to work out bus times at the moment.

The hot sauce now needs to simmer for an hour before I cogitate sweetening and thickening. If I had a kitchen door I would close it since the kitchen atmosphere will be about as burning as mustard gas. Sweetening is tricky, since it involves tasting, and since one teaspoonful of hot sauce will turn a whole plateful of food into a vindaloo (give or take) tasting the sauce neat necessitates using extremely (er EXTREMELY) small quantities.

Remember that there will be a session at th Kings Arms on st. George's Day weekend. I'll start that thread later today.

Just been to Tesco and have a HUGE rucksack of food, so sitting outside a pub at mo waiting to get a pint before I step out for home!

Have fun one and all.

Kev

"Here,s to absent friends
What a great afternoon. I throughly enjoyed it has always.

Well done to all singers . and little singers. "Annie & Isabella"& not necessarily in that order?
The musicians whom ? fell rolled and tumbled there way through there verse and music in the early stages but everyone settled and it was a good event.

The bar staff were great and the regular locals showed interest with frequent applause.
I think we played and sang ourselves out of The Nags this evening handing it back for the evening to the regulars.

Enough is good has a feast in regards the event.

Finally,
Thanks to Melodeon Boy for the lift.
Oh and not forgetting,
first and foremost
To Richard for organizing the event.

Based on many of the performances yesterday (started by me) I would say the end of an error!

Actually, it was great, lots of laughs and feels liberating to know the seasoned performers can make the occasional cock up and deal with it gracefully.

Was that young fellow with the Martin that started with wicked blues playing, Morningwood?

Welcome! Hope you can make it to the Good Intent for the Sweeps.

Thanks to the Pete the Landlord and to Mary behind the bar for how welcome you made us.

Pete- I am so pleased with how much your playing and performing has improved. See you at the Sweeps. Could you pm me with the name and charge of the place you stay during Sweeps. I am searching for a friend.

Weren't there a lot of mistakes!! Most weird.. After general bumblings and fumblings however, the afternoon concluded with a proper rousing bunch of songs!

Cheers to Richard for hosting another season of Winter Sings at the Nag's with the excellent acoustics, and for genial hostage plus optionally spiced refueling pottages at his home. It beats singing all alone and beerless at the top of my stairs anyway, though the acoustics at the top of my stairs are fairly good.
Cheers to Don, for my request of 'The Old Miner'. And to Tam for working up a version of 'See Lyin' Woman' too - I may have to steal your lyrics.

My calendar tells me (despite empirical evidence to the contrary) that yesterday was the Spring Equinox, so on with Summer (I think).

Funny, I just posted a post and it ahs vanished.

I have a slightly incomplete Arion tuner (missing part of the clip that clips onto the headstock - Pete is it yours? It was on the dining room floor.

I also have a funny little thing made of clear plastic roughly barrell-shaped, under an inch long and about a quarter to 3/8ths of an inch across with what looks like the tip of a pink crayon in it. It was on the drawing room floor in front of teh HiFi cabinet next to the coffee table.

Tam, sorry didn't really have a chance to say hello proper, but yes that was me. Not so sure about the "wicked blues playing" as it all went a bit awry but thanks for the kind words as it gives me the confidence to have another go when I can get my sh!t together a bit more.

The plural of plectrum in English is plectrums when talking about guitar picks but plectra when talking about the mechanism of a harpsichord! Tortiseshell doesn't come from a tortoise, but a giant turtle and it's now banned in the UK unless made before the date when it was banned, whenever that was. Anyway whoever found my plectrum can keep it. I've been offered a job as drummer with a band called "Stone Dead Leopard" who are a tribute band for TDL and we do parodies of TDL songs! Only problem is I've lost one of my drumsticks ...

Swing from chandeliers,?
Yeah thats right?
bring the bloody ceiling down?

Right Richard are we having a Nags session on the Sunday 18th April 2010 because I have a day off that day and I have heard rumor

I have also brought yet another Clip on tuner?
My 12 string stays in tune very well indeed despite old folk Legends that say 12 strings do not stay in tune and one is forever tuning them Nonsense.
but it wont stay in tune until Sweeps I fear.

This next tuner I will secure it to the headstock like a friend of mine has done and that will be the end of losing tuners.
When Richard reunites me with the one I left at his place I will do the same with that on the 6 string. I do not see why one has to keep taking clip on tuners
Off and on anyway might has well leave them where they are securely.
I think its a excellent Idea.
Regards Pierre

"Right Richard are we having a Nags session on the Sunday 18th April 2010 because I have a day off that day and I have heard rumor"

Shame I won't be able to make that date if it happens as I'm going to a weekend workshop in sunny Yorkshire with Stefan Grossman. I must say I am looking forward to it though.

Pierre, the headstock of a guitar is holy ground and should only carry the tuners, makers name, nut, dust and the odd fag burn from that Keith Richards moment. It's not to be cluttered with electronic tuners and capo's etc, it's against the law!! Although if you're at a session and happen to find a pick then it's quite acceptable to jam that between the strings at the headstock in the hope that the rightful owner will come forward and claim the pick. But that's another story...

Paul.

Al, it's in Pateley Bridge if you know it. It's a bit of a jaunt but I'm looking forward to it. I was going a few years ago but then fell off my bike and broke the thumb and index finger on one hand and the thumb on the other! After that didn't touch the much guitar for about 3 years, and the digits still aint right.

No need to feel nervous around me, it's a case of "all the gear and no idea" I'm afraid.

Paul.

ps Sorry for the fred drift.
