As Don says the Bedford has a very mixed session in the main bar: there was one afternoon a couple of years ago when it turned into "Concertinas Rule OK", and most of the rest voted with their feet! After many years of going to the Bedford I eventually discovered the late night "inner sanctum" where the serious singers go! And there's the small dining room where the professional players usually end up.
Smokers seem to head for the Swan as there's the outdoor bit at the back, albeit under a canopy, where they make up for the smoking ban elsewhere!

Sorry to hear the manor is no longer welcoming , and I'd forgotten Tudor !! The problem with being stuck in The Newt most of the week !

You will also find sessions in Tudors (next to what used to be woolworths) I think the term previously used for those who attend are the "young crowd" allthough all are welcome to come drink and play some tunes. Does revolve around when they are using the space to serve food though.

I am doubtful that there are any fringe events in the Manor Pavilion this year - in any case, the management didn't want singarounds in the bar, which was why we had to move.

The Faulkner = the Faulkner bar of the Royal York & Faulkner hotel. The morning singarounds run from 10.30am to 12.30pm Sunday to Friday and Rosy's evening sessions Friday to Friday (as far as I know).

The Ashby de la Zouch folk club reunion (open to all) will take place in the Volunteer garden on the first Friday evening.

""The Bedford - Massed Melodeons and other Morris orientated music session more or less ALL week""

Come on Terry, play fair. The main bar at the Bedford is, and always has been, a mixed session.

Five minute sets of tunes interspersed with plenty of opportunity for singers. I spend most of my days there, and I am absolutely not an aficionado of the Melodeon and Morris set.

Ooops ! Jumped the gun again !

Manor Pavillion - Sing Around ??

Yacht Club - Mixed Session

The Black Horse - ?? Not Sure !

The Ship - Looks like the Young Crowd have taken that one - And bloody good they are

Any additions , please add them on ! But I DID say that was a basic list and I may have missed some !

The Bedford - Massed Melodeons and other Morris orientated music session more or less ALL week

The Bedford (Other Bar) Old Timey session

The Faulkner - Song Circle twice a day

The Swan - Mixed session

The Radway - The English Tune ALL Day All week ! LOL

The Anchor - The Middle Bar (Upstairs twice a day)

The Anchor - The Irish Tune (Downstairs All Day All week)

The Volunteer - Traditional music and song

The Newt - Mixed session twice a day with who ever wants to fill in between 3 pm and 8 pm

""Don: Of what relevence is the specification of your computer?""

Quite simply that if any PC is going to find this site unuseable, one might expect it to be an up to date high spec machine, and it simply is not.

Answer to your problem is:- Don't like Mudcat? Don't use it! Seemples!

WE like it just fine as it is, and before you ask, this has been openly discussed on several occasions.

What does Mudcat have that some others don't (including a Scottish one I use regularly)?
The facility to follow threads that interest you, by tracing to your personal page.
The facility to PM other users off forum if there is an issue you think is only relevant to them.
The DT, lyrics and midis galore.
I think it's a great forum!

have patience Percy... it will come. Now I hope we can get this thread back on track.

So we have a few who have posted they are going... what next?

I suppose we stewards wait for assignments before we can plan the fun stuff.

Is there a list (including descriptions) of fringe activities and events? Will there be a mini mudcat gather anywhere?

Yep. I'm all sorted. I'm in the Manor as well. Anne phoned me personally and reassured me. Seems my emails kept bouncing back to them. I know that that was a typing error at their end as I have "dd" in my email address and people somestimes only use one! SIMPLES! ALL SORTED :-))))

Looking forward to seeing ALL of "Team Sidmouth" - not long now!

Kev

ps - thanks for your help Anne. I'll email photo to you at the weekend. Cheers. Kev

If the Sidmouth admins can't figure out how to become a member of Mudcat it doesn't speak very well for their technical competence.
I would also expect anybody doing a job like that to have known about Mudcat and joined it ten years ago - it's always been the world's most active forum for the kind of music Sidmouth promotes.

I can assure you, Jack, that the Sidmouth organisers know all about Mudcat, use it and monitor comments about the festival.

It is not clear that "All Folked Up" is anything to do with the festival. In any case, the following messages indicated that the problem was at Mudcat's end.

Getting beyond the realms of my competence now but the amount of data here is totally huge and might well be beyond some free forum software. For example here I have nearly 1,000 incoming messages stored, and on most Joomla systems I've seen total mailbox size (incoming and outgoing) is limited to 100 messages.

Also at least one of the Volvo forums had a total loss of data due to (I think) a software problem and that would be most annoying: here there have been glitches but usually eventually stuff has finished up back where it ought to be.

I would personally say that a sub-forum system would be counter-productive. There is a significant merit in easy cross-fertilisation, and in may sub-forum systems things get posted several times in separate sub-forums so as to find thiere "audience". Also actually finding something is much harder if you have to burrow through sub-forums.

This has gone way off topic but hey, I'll continue. There are many many ghood free forum softwares out there with easy to use management tools.

I'd just like to see a little more structure to it, sub-forums and such to make it easier to find topics on a particular subject in stead of a long list. Perhaps the ability to set up email notifications (this may already be a feature but the registration pags seems to be broken so I dont know!). Call it constructive criticism!

The rest of us here don't have a useability problem, and I'm using a high end gaming PC, so what's the problem?

Apologies for not posting my registration troubles in the help forum, aparently this section is unavailable! That's quality for you.
Sorry about the registration problem. Our normal registration page is not working right, but it works fine on our "dev" (developmental) site. This link (click) should work just fine for you.
We shut down our Help forum a couple of years ago because it got flooded with Spam and other nastiness.
If you still have problems with registration, send me an e-mail.

Richard, I would be registered if the site didnt spit error codes in ym face!

See here:

If the Sidmouth admins can't figure out how to become a member of Mudcat it doesn't speak very well for their technical competence.

I would also expect anybody doing a job like that to have known about Mudcat and joined it ten years ago - it's always been the world's most active forum for the kind of music Sidmouth promotes.

This is rather like going along to your financial adviser with a clipping about your pension scheme from the Financial Times and finding the adviser has never read it.

IMHO the format of the Mudcat is easier to use than any other forum I have yet found on the internet.

As to the River Sid - I am gratified to say that last week I met my hosts from last year at another thing, and they kindly invited me to stay again, with no arm twisting. So once again I will aim to appear about Freddy lunchtime and vanish some time Sunday, time in between spent in fringes.

I'll use the twin cam this year, not the turbo - unless the twin-cam-turbo is finished by then but I don't expect it to be.

Has anyone got a subscription to met-check so we can start early wevva predictions?

All Folked Up - quite true there has been some griping. At least it means people really care about this festival.... a lot. And as is quite normal with all humans, change is often met with some negative feedback.

Please don't take it to heart. I should think the new system for steward application will run more smoothly next year. My only problem with it, was the photo upload didn't like the browser I used. So I switched from google chrome to internet explorer and it worked a treat. Sometimes it is something so simple as you mentioned with emails being dumped into junk folders or my browser prob. So if we discuss here, we can sort each other's technical issues out.

Mudcat is not unusable at all. It is easily usable if you sign up with a legitimate email address. I don't understand what your problem is. You evidently found the thread easily enough to be able to leave a post on it.

As to prehistoric, that is a bit exaggerative.   What Mudcat is, is....... traditional. It has not yet formally undergone the folk process. I quite like its current format.

Sorry for the aside, but last post was a bit.... off-putting.

I understand that Kev is now all sorted re stewarding.
I am looking forward to meeting a whole new group of mud catters there.

Kev: I am unable to register on mudcat because the site is so poorly coded and doesnt use a proper forum. Rant over...

However if you email stewards@sidmouthfolkweek.co.uk regards your "missing" emails perhaps you would get a response.

I would suggest checking your junk email folder for any you may have missed as I know the photo upload reminder has gone out at least 3 times already.

Apologies I dont check mudcat often as the layout is so prehistoric it's unuseable!

Can you reply to the email you received? Did it possibly have a number or does the website have a number?

I emailed last week to ask if the photos uploaded, what we need to do to book a space for caravan as we can not attend without it and to explain my sometimes physical limitations regards steward duties. But that was only last week.

Certain they are extremely busy so I will wait another 3 to 4 weeks before I contact again.

Val had her stewards number and photo request soon after.

I on the other hand, have had nothing!! No official acceptance form, no stewards number and no request to upload a photo!

Does ANYBODY know what is going on please?

Some people have already been told where they will be stewarding!

It is eight weeks until the start of the festival!

An answer for someone who is trying to volunteer their time would be much appreciated.

Re the Big Band posts

I know that it's painful to lose an event that you've enjoyed for many years, because the singarounds we ran in the Theatre Bar for many years were discontinued when the new management of the Manor Pavilion took over and didn't want them.

We were lucky enough to find another venue for singarounds, though on fewer days and for less time, and on the fringe.

Anonymously slagging off the current festival organisers for scheduling a different workshop this year isn't very constructive. If you can find another venue, I'd guess it would be advertised in the programme..?

Guest: you have been aggressive and confrontational towards me since your first post on this thread. If you think that is the way to effectively persuade people to your point of view, I'm afraid you're mistaken. If it makes you feel clever to think you've "rattled my cage", knock yourself out. Life's too short.

Sal, I don't know who "offered" you 15% from our "committee", but we have one person dealing with catering and she is the only person who had the authority to make any sort of offer on behalf of the festival. We are not run by "committee". You may find "a sniff of disorganisation" off-putting, but many festivals would also find traders who regularly slag them off in public forums (because this is not the first time) equally off-putting. If you are not happy with the terms you were offered, that is unfortunate.

I have come into this thread on several occasions to try to be helpful and answer questions, but I think it's time I stepped back to focus on doping what I do best, which is programming the festival. Have I mentioned that ticket sales are up by 21% this year? Hurrah! So there are clearly a few people out there who are looking forward to coming along. We have lots of brand new caterers this year who will be offering a great range of food and drink to festival-goers across all of our sites, and lots of exciting new events for them to enjoy.

For those of you coming to Sidmouth - see you there! For those of you who aren't, enjoy whatever you'll be doing instead.

Bye!

Thank you for your comment Don. It goes much further for my trade at this venue. Activities don't get going in the Blackmoor Gardens till mid day and usually empties around 5.00. Other caterers at the Ham sell a variety of products and have passing trade till gone mid night. For an odd reason I've been compared with them. Weather wise it can be very unstable, not actually opening for one day last year because of the rain; rain for me means no customers. This is the risk I take. Hey, life's too short to get upset about losing this one. I also received an email from the venue organiser who had omitted to delete the previous email he'd had from a collegue about me being there. It wasn't nice. I don't think they want me there and i'm wondering if the pitch's already gone to my competition. We'll see. I really don't mind and will pop over anyway for a good sing in the Middle Bar.

I have to say that 15% sounds a lot more reasonable than a flat £500, and if I were producing a product for sale at a festival with unpredictable weather, I would run a mile from the latter.

You will be seriously missed though, Sal.

There comes a point where commercial efficiency overrides common sense, and it's arguable that this is that point. There are always some facilities which have a disproportionately positive effect, and we discard them at our risk.

It also appears that there are too many people making decisions and not consulting their collegues on the committee. I was offered 15% of my turnover, which I agreed, only to have it changed to £500. I'm sorry but you're the 2nd festival to do that to me this season. Once I sniff disorganisation, i'm out.

"New" participants doesn't necessarily mean younger. This decision has nothing to do with age, it's to do with creating a workshop that fulfils the brief of a ceilidh workshop. Changing the focus of one workshop series in a festival containing around 600 events is hardly "chasing youth at the expense of more mature festival-goers". The festival as a whole covers a wider range of activities and interests than any other festival in England, and will continue to do so - and at the same time it will continue to grow, and develop, and change.

It is not about stifling discussion. The decision has been made and I have explained why, so there is really no point going round in circles.

And given some of your other (quite personal) remarks, including one in your opening post, I'm afraid I don't believe you when you say you're not a regular Mudcat member, "Guest". Not that it particularly matters as I don't intend to discuss this matter any further with you.

As I say, this isn't my area. I do know that the festival is gradually moving from a position of debt (accrued over several years) to one of financial stability, and there will be many factors which contribute to the new stability. Increased pitch fees are clearly one of them. I am sorry you're unable to come under the current offer, Sal, but I hope you realise that these decisions are not made out of greed, but because the festival has had to change the way it does business in many respects simply in order to survive.

As I have explained: the original workshop was supposed to be a ceilidh band workshop. It is not performing that function. We are creating something, as part of the festival's ongoing development and in response to requests from festival guests, which is closer to the actual brief of that workshop. Because of the pressures on workshop space, we cannot run another large scale workshop in the mornings. So there is no room in the programme this year for that particular workshop.

I'm afraid that the decision is made. As I say, it was taken in consultation with others who have a much longer involvement with the festival than I do, who support the decision. I hope that people who have enjoyed the previous workshop will come along and try the new one, and enjoy it just as much - and by opening things up a bit, we might even get some new participants as well.

If you wish to continue this conversation, perhaps you would be kind enough to send me a PM. I feel that your points have been responded to now, and to the continue to discuss the issue would only become increasingly repetitive, which I know is a popular Mudcat passtime but it's one I simply don't have time for right now.

Best wishes,

Joan

Oh - I would add that "Clearly you are ignoring the wishes of those who attend" implies that you speak for all of those who have attended the workshop in the past. In fact, I'd hope that many of the people who previously attended the big ceilidh band workshop will give the new set-up a try, and many will hopefully really enjoy it. This is not a reduction in provision - it's just something a bit different that what's gone before.

"Guest": the decision is made, the reasons have been stated. The workshop you refer to is a ceilidh band workshop; it came together to create a ceilidh band, which played for a ceilidh at the end of the week. The decision was taken based on feedback from existing customers, plus consultation with people who have been involved in the mamnagement of the festival for many years, who were also supportive of the change. Sometimes things have to change. I am very sorry if it isn't a change that you are happy with.

"I've no doubt the Rugby Club could accommodate both your new workshop and the much loved and enjoyed "Big Band" if you wished to run both."

Actually, the Rugby Club is pretty much back-to-back with activity of all kinds this year - adults' workshops, talks, led sessions, youth activity, children's activities. As I explained earlier, workshop space is always tight - if nothing ever changed, we would not ever be able to introduce anything new.

Although the workshop programme is not yet published, it is complete. I am not intending to make any further major changes, as artists' contracts and timetables are currently being produced.

Best wishes,

Joan Crump

Hello, anonymous guest! :)

To be clear, we have not scrapped a Big Band workshop. John Kirkpatrick has always run the festival band workshop, and he still will. The workshop series you refer to is actually meant to be a Ceilidh Band Workshop. But as is evident from your post, it has morphed over the years into another big band workshop. Last year, several people remarked in their feedback that they would like a ceilidh band workshop that is more like the experience of playing in a real ceilidh band - ie, smaller ensembles developed over the week. As we have a new ceilidh coordinator on board in the form of Cat Kelly, who is also running her popular Callers' Academy at this year's festival, we decided it was an opportunity to create something new. So this year's Ceilidh Band workshop will have guest tuition from some of the leading ceilidh bands in the country, and will work in conjunction with the Calling Academy - and might even result in some real life ceilidh ensembles being formed.

So, you may ask, why are we not running the "Big Band" workshop as well as the new Ceilidh Band workshop? Two reasons: first of all, we already have a band workshop with JK's daily session; secondly, one of the biggest challenges at Sidmouth is venues - particularly during the day, and particularly for workshops that require a fair bit of space and with floors appropriate for dancing. Unfortunately we simply can't fit in every single workshop and event that every single visitor would like, much as we might wish to.

Every festival has to grow and change if it is to develop and not stagnate. We have to listen to the views and take into consideration the needs of visitors who feel they are not being particularly well catered for, in addition to those that are perfectly happy with the way things are. Sometimes, that means making difficult choices.

I'm afraid that I am not involved in decisions around catering, so I have absolutely no idea if or why a decision has been taken not to have Sal's lemonade this year. I do know that we have had a lot more catering applications this year, and there is someone new to the festival team who is managing the applications. If Sal would like to discuss the situation privately I am happy to do so.

Joan

"I thought it was going to stay small after Mr H departed? Are there plans for it to grow again? Is this what the locals want?"

I would venture a guess that a greater proportion of those 6 - 700 events are participative - workshops, talks, lectures, dances etc - than at any other UK folk festival. So it depends what you mean by "small" - for me, it means making sure that the grass roots is well represented and catered for.

What the locals want is a festival that is solvent - because that's sustainable. Locals want the festival to keep bringing a substantial economic impact to the region, as it is well known in the area that festival week has a major impact on the viability of a number of local businesses. Should the festival be too small, or disappear altogether, that economic benefit would be lost. So a certain critical mass of activity - and visitor numbers - needs to be maintained.

We are working very much with the local business community, and we have certainly had no feedback so far that the festival is any bigger than the local community would want it to be.

Looking forward to seeing everyone, both other stewards and folkie singers/musos :-)))))) Tam - you are going to LOVE IT! The crowd will be there - Essex Girl, Hoff, the Baird, Pierre, Naughty Forty - may the force be with you!

I just received 4 "gentle" reminders to upload photos 2 for each of us. System must depend on someone entering some info on the Sidmouth end before it generates the request for photo upload.

Anyway. I have just scanned the photos and uploaded them. Does not work in Google Chrome but did (I think) in Internet Explorer.

I submitted TSO's app a minute or so after I submitted mine. Today I received TSO's acceptance with indication that he should have had a request for photo upload.

We have not had the request for photo upload. And now I am wondering where my acceptance. Maybe I buggered up the system by using my email addie for both applications.

If it's broken you can all blame me.

Got confirmation of acceptance yesterday. Bit of a damp squib since the photo request preceded it by a couple of days. I kind of assumed that they wouldn't want my photo if I hadn't been accepted!

Photo upload worked fine (Firefox with 50k JPEG).

Just need to know which form I fill in to get a dry campsite...

"It WILL be a shame if , because of the vagaries of the system , there is shortage of Stewards come the day , and those that HAVE got in will have to work longer shifts !"

If anything, what we have found is that, while some people have been working many hours, every day, some have worked very few hours for a couple of days and enjoyed the same benefits. What we ARE trying to do is make sure that the system is as fair as possible, regardless of what job you are doing or which venue you are assigned to. This is likely to ensure that we keep a strong, dedicated team of stewards year on year, where no one feels they are being treated unfairly. It should also help to ensure that we are using the team we have as effectively as possible.

We also have to balance the experience of previous years with the reality that season ticket sales are up almost 25% from last year, and individual event tickets have not even gone on sale yet. We have to make a new system work with audience numbers that are not following any previous trends and are rather unpredictable. So a cut-and-dried "this is the way we've always done it, let's carry it through to next year" approach is simply not going to work.

Ruth - sounds very much like the School Governor conferences I used to administrate. Only 300 delegate places for over 9000 governors, 13 workshops offered twice in the day, 2+ seminars, surgery and opening and closing lectures, 2 lunch sittings, 2 dozens speakers and VIPs and dealing with technical issues on a rather spread out campus.

It was a bear to organise and tiny in comparison to Sidmouth. Best of luck and as little stress as possible to those organisers.

"Ruth - you have stated several times that you are addressing this issue and that the system is new and that we will be hearing from you soon - but it just isn't happening."

As Virginia Tam says, this falls outside of my remit. I have brought this thread to the attention of the appropriate people within the team, and have done my best to assist with the areas that I can.

"Rather like the billions that our governments spend on I.T. only to find it doesn't work. I must ask why was something that wasn't broke used again?"

The idea that the old system wasn't "broke" is a big assumption. Since The festival effectively re-launched after Mrs Casey left, the organisation has been gradually evolving. It is run very differently even now than it did 5 years ago. As it changes and evolves, systems must inevitably develop. The festival "manual" is still being written, because for the first few years, people were rather preoccupied with the huge task of just making the festival happen every year. Now we are taking stock, and seeing what works and what doesn't, and what we can do to make things better.

The new stewarding systems are not just about new IT. There has also not been an audit in many years of the ratio of stewards to venues, how many we actually need, what the standard shift times should be, etc. While many of these issues have been discussed and evaluated through the year, some of them were dependent on certain aspects of the programme being completed before any judgements could be taken. While all of these elements are making things more challenging this year (especially for our very small and hard-working team), hopefully we are creating systems which make things far more efficient in years to come.

Kevin - This element of the festival is not in Ruth's remit as I understand it. She has looked into it and reported what she could to both sides. Can't say fairer than that. It is a new system. There is likely only a handful of people dealing with this among other things to do with the festival.

I am just feeling worried that I won't be able to go at all if the other camp site gets booked up and we don't make steward, especially now it has been built up so much to me. Yes I really want to be there. But if it doesn't happen I will learn to live with it and just go to some other smaller festivals this year and try Sidmouth next year.

Now... just breath. As you have stewarded before, I am sure you will make it this year. See you next weekend in Rochester.

I applied online at the same time as Val. She is confirmed, I am not. I have sent TWO emails to the stewards@sidmouthfolkweek email address and have had no reply from either email. I even tried submitting a fresh application this evening tonight in the hope that I would get a response tonight and the site informed me that I was making a duplicate application!

I have heard yet again, of many friends who are being asked for electronic photos BEFORE being confirmed.

I along with many others, have encouraged people to think about stewarding at Sidmouth. Virginia has stated above that she is thinking about making alternative arrangements due to the stress and uncertainty that this POOR lack of response is causing!

Ruth - you have stated several times that you are addressing this issue and that the system is new and that we will be hearing from you soon - but it just isn't happening.

Sidmouth relies very much on the hard work and commitment of the stewards. At the moment, it feels like we are being taken for granted and that we will be the last to know about whatever is going on.

PLEASE tell potential applicants if they have been accepted. PLEASE reply to emails sent from your official website.

This rant will probably ensure that I am not picked - but, SORRY - it needs saying. People have expressed grave concerns and they are NOT getting answers!

Regards

Kev

Many thanks for the suggestions, particularly from Virginia Tam and Tattie Bogle. Unfortunately my nearest Jessops or Staples is about 25 miles away. My computer is about fifteen years old, with programs which are also on their knees, so I don't know if it will be able to send anything by e-mail. The last few times I have tried the items have been returned.
Unfortunately the current organisers of the festival seem to be unable to comprehend that many people 1) may not have a computer, 2) may have a very old or basic one, like mine, 3) may live, as I do, in an area far from a large town 4) may have no use or need for "modern technology".
It seems that there is rampant discrimination against us "more simple" folk!

After camping Mon-Sat last year we worked out that even in good conditions it's a logistical impossibility to get to morning workshops and do LNE. As you won't get any sleep until LNE ends and there were too many BYTs being noisy late and horribly early, we thought it just too much of an endurance test.

Bits of it were very good, but too much like hard work. Not to mention the rain.

May manage a day or so.

TSO and I haven't heard yet either Kev.

Bonecruncher - I should think that you could scan a photo even one taken in photo booth which come out the proportions of ID photos for passports, etc. If you don't have a scanner then you can take photo to Staples or Jessops or some such place. They can save to CD, then you can load to your pc and email.

Luckily TSO and I still have photos from my Leave to Remain application. I will scan those and send if/when Sidmouth Stewarding team request them.

To potential stewards:

Having spoken to the Operations Manager, the delay is due to the system for managing stewarding changing a bit this year. As with any system review, implementation is just taking a bit more time than usual.

You should be hearing from the festival very soon.

"Come on Sidmouth, some people have to make money out of trading and the season is short. Most venues are done and dusted and they are well before your festival."

And most festivals aren't dealing with almost 700 events over 8 days, an infrastructure which spans both town and greenfield sites, and an administrative system which is going through a process of major change. The festival appreciates that you have to make money out of trading, and everyone on the Sidmouth team is doing their best to satisfy your needs as well and as quickly as possible - as well as the needs of all our other traders, catering partners, volunteers and customers. Thanks to all of you for your patience.

snip from confirmation email we received 7 March.

Thank you for applying to steward at Sidmouth FolkWeek 2010. We have received your application and we will contact you by email if/when you have been allocated to a particular team/venue.

You will be contacted by email with a link to upload a passport photo of yourself, your application will not be considered if you fail to upload a suitable image (do not be concerned if this email does not arrive immediately). Instructions will be included in this email which will arrive when the photo upload facility is available.

Maybe the function for uploading passport photos is not working yet, so possibly holding things up. I can imagine getting to grips with a new booking system has its repercussions too. Now that I am determined to go, If I have not heard by early May, I will look into booking alternate camp site and buy tickets for specific events and fringe it the rest of the time.

I have previously brought the issue of stewarding forms to the attention of the Operations Manager; I will raise it again with him and with the person who created the online booking system.

Hoff, glad to hear that you will be in Sidders again this year!!

Has ANYBODY that has opted to be a Steward heard ANYTHING from ANYONE yet?

Ruth said that she would be having words with the people who do the website/stewards bit, but as yet, I have still not heard a dikiebird, and as far as I know, other friends have not either.

It is vitally important to know 1:Has the registration form been received and 2: Have we been accepted (so that we can get booked in somewhere, and also budget for the week).

It's only fourteen weeks to go, but we all need to plan accordingly.

As my original post said, my girlfriend and I registered within 30 seconds of each other - she received an acceptance email the following morning, whilst I have heard nothing. I even emailed the stewards email address and have heard nothing.

Any further news please would be GREATLY appreciated.

Kind regards to all

Kev

Ruth, I was merely making an observation, and I do appreciate the huge amount of work that has gone into keeping the Festival alive after it nearly died, and the financial risks taken by those who committed themselves to that process. IMHO the Folk Week we have now is all the better for it: as many have said before "it has given the festival back to the town". (I speak as one whose husband is a Sidmouthian).
And despite my observations, I HAVE bought the day and evening season tickets, tho' I may not go to everything I'm entitled to (physically impossible anyway, when there's so much choice)- as I also love the Fringe events, esp the Middle Bar and the Bedford sessions with JB and pals.
The "Fringe- only" crowd also spend money in the town which is all to the good of it, and most contribute to the Folk Week collecting tins. Have also heard some local businesses say that what they take in Folk Week sustains them through the long quiet winter months.

I felt I rather imposed on my hosts last year (John Barden, who is a bad influence, can tell the story) - they live a mere 100 yards from the Volunteer - so if I can convince myself that I can manage the office remotely with netbook and mobile phone, where else should I be looking to sleep affordably? If I can get a shower and loo somewhere I'm happy to sleep with guitars in back of Volvo (keys well hidden in case PC Plod asserts I'm "drunk in charge").

I'd be happy notionally to chair the Newt until Terry arrives, it's pretty well self-running. How early would I need to be there on Friday if I were to be permitted to do that?

Oh, one more thing: at the moment the sale of season, weekend and day tickets is substantially up on last year. As a result, advance tickets for events that are likely to be very popular may be quite limited; for some events, we won't sell any at all. This is to ensure that day, weekend and season ticket-holders are not disadvantaged and have the best chance of seeing the events they are most looking forward to.

If there is something that you really, really want to see (such as the Nic Jones concert, Bagpuss, Bellowhead or Roy Bailey's solo concert in the Methodist Church), it might be wise to buy a day ticket for that day.

Of course, in the event that these events are not actually over-capacity on the day, we will sell tickets for any remaining seats on the door.

Chaps, the festival LOVES the fringe! Over the past eighteen months or so, our relationship with the town has improved enormously, which translates to a more supportive atmosphere in Folkweek and year round, and more material support locally for the festival as well. One of the things which has helped to develop this relationship is that we have driven home the economic impact of the festival on the region. Whether you attend festival events or not, if you are staying in a local hotel, B&B or campsite, using the supermarkets and restaurants, going to pubs and buying things in shops, you are contributing to the festival's positive impact on Sidmouth and consequently to our good relationship with the town's business community.

Of course, we also thrive on the collections, so your donations in the many tins are equally welcome and much appreciated!

If you want to help the festival, though, please also consider supporting those businesses who support the festival (you'll find the list in the programme or on our website, and most have signs in the window) - and let them know that you're shopping there because they support FolkWeek!

Last year, there was one shop which was selling "I (heart) FolkWeek" cotton bags - of course, there was no money coming to the festival from these, and to add insult to injury, they weren't even sponsors! (I did pop in and ask if they'd like to become sponsors as they were making money from the festival, but was rebuffed). So again, if you are going to buy FolkWeek merchandise, please buy the official stuff on sale at the Ham, as all profits help to ensure the festival's future.

Like Terry I'm always fringe too, but do buy tickets for the concerts I want to see and always contribute whatever I can afford on a daily basis to the collecting tins, thus in my small way helping to keep Sidmouth and, I hope, the spirit of Sidmouth alive. See you all in The Bedford and elsewhere (God willing of course)

Sidmouth is a classic example of something that has developed to the point that it is impossible for any one organisation to do HALF of what some people want !
And people like me who ONLY do the fringe dont really help the Festival at all , though the festival would certainly not be the same without the fringe .

"it was still better value when there wasn't the separate evening events extra/supplement."

Unfortunately, Tattie Bogle, we have to balance best value for the customer with making the festival pay for itself. This certainly seems the fairest system: we keep the season ticket as cost-effective as possible, and provide a Ham Evening Season on top, ticket which effectively cuts the cost of attending all the Ham evening concerts in half. If you don't want to attend all of the Ham evening concerts, you still get a discount on individual concerts.

It's as flexible as possible so that people can buy the combination of tickets that best suits them. To be frank, we could not offer what we offer (something like 700 events over 8 days) any more cheaply, and it seems unfair to ask people who aren't so bothered about the Ham in the evening to subsidise the people who want to attend every concert there.

Tattie Bogle, I bought a season ticket for my first Sidmouth a few years ago, and I was only there for four days. I still reckon I got better value than I would have done from individual tickets.

If you're going to attend a dozen or more events over the course of the week, the ticket has pretty much paid for itself.

One of the difficulties of deciding to buy season ticket or not (if you can afford it) is working out the economics of it, as they don't tell you the price of buying for individual concerts, nor the full range of events available, so you can't work out how much you might have spent as a PAYG attender.
With 10 minutes before the midnight deadline, I did eventually succumb to the offer!

""Don, whats up with the car? I'm up in the Cambridgeshire area now, so if I can help with twirling a spanner or two let me know.""

The offer's much apopreciated Chris, but basically the car is fine.

Ford Scorpios are as rare as hens' teeth now, and some stupid twerp i n Tesco's car park took out the left headlamp, and crushed the glassfibre bumper.

New Headlamp from Ford £196.50
New bumper from Ford (special order) £600 or thereabouts
Plus one tyre, rated for 146mph top speed (I never do more than about 80, but they won't allow lower spec in MOT) £75 approx
Plus MOT £53.50 ast time. God knows what next time.

Takes more than a year to save that kind of dosh, so I'm looking for second hand parts. Back to the Hen's teeth.

Ho Hum.

The upside is they only sold 50,000, so anytime soon the survivors will start to appreciate in value. Qualifies as a classic after this April.

The festival has CRBs carried out as required - but it doesn't cost us that much because there is a substantially reduced charge for non-paid members of staff.

There are lots of ways to enjoy the festival: individual event tickets, weekend tickets, day tickets, and a workshop series pass that gives 5 for the price of 4. If you buy a day or a weekend pass, you can stay on the festival campsite on those days - or the Supporter's Club also lets you buy passes for the official campsite (there's a bus service from the campsite into town, which is handy).

Have fun!

I had a CRB check in 2008 when I was still a Governor and working for Governor Services. I think they have to be re-upped every year to 18 months though. At £65 a pop it can get expensive. Can't wait for the International Safeguarding Authority to get its finger out. The CRB check won't need to be done yearly any more.

All is not lost... Just found out if we don't get steward jobs that we can still go and do stuff. Maybe a weekend pass with camping at alternate site.

Mostly I want to do sessions and a few concerts which maybe I can pay for separately with Supporters pass. Lots of options.

We will be there at some point and in some capacity. Thanks all.

Re the season ticket cost: Sidmouth has over 600 events to choose from, but we do our best keep the season ticket price as competitive as possible. It compares very favourably with other festivals when you consider they only run for the weekend (and check out our very competitive weekend tickets!). But Tam, we always need more stewards, so if that's an option which means you can enjoy the festival for the first time, we'll look forward to seeing you! There are craft activities for kids every day. Philippa, who runs the children's festival, has specific stewards who are CRB checked, so if this is something you'd be interested in, it's best to put the request in asap.

You can also buy discounted individual Ham evening concert tickets for specific events if you buy a season ticket.

So now we are looking at full week. But from what I can determine the full week adult pass does not include the Ham season. So we pay £148 per adult for any shows happening outside the Ham?

Blast... this is going to be so expensive. It will mean we have to give other festivals a miss.

I have been told I should become a steward (up to 5 hours work a day) but I don't think I have that much energy to give to both stewarding and having fun.
