I am one of Harry Cox's great grand children (my mother was Harry's only grandchild) and I can assure you that we aren't related to John Terry!

I have never seen any evidence for the claim that Harry was John Terry's great grandfather.

I edited it out of the Wikipedia page on John last year and made these comments on the associated discussion page:-

"I have edited out this reference which has been marked up for some months as requiring a citation "His great-grandfather, Harry Cox, was a noted traditional folk singer, featured in Lomax interviews.[citation needed]"

Harry Cox was a friend of my daughter's godfather in Norfolk, there seems no local tradition of a relationship to John Terry. Harry's only child to survive infancy as far as I know was Myrtle, she married Lenny Helsdon. A bit of cursory research suggests the names of John Terry's great grandparents were TERRY, WILLING, POWELL, CHESTER, CHURCH, LEWIS(?), BELL and HENESSEY(?). I will make a similar edit on Harry Cox's page. IainWallace (talk) 01:03, 18 October 2009 (UTC)"

For some fairly personal reasons I did the Cox family tree … I know pretty well who was and who wasn't related to Harry, no Terrys that I noticed. There again, nobody's perfect.

I didn't need to ask ,I just wondered what your comment had to do with the subject at hand. And that is ; is Wayne Rooney one of the piper Doran's ?.

I would have thought it was obvious but as you needed to ask, it was a response to the weird suggestion that Wayne Rooney would have been better off playing for the Republic rather than England.

He's not playing for the Republic because all his grandparents were born in Liverpool.

Re. Wayne Rooney, it's not impossible that there is a piping connection. There was a family of Rooneys who spent a lot of time in Liverpool who were travelling pipers. I don't know if they were related to the Dorans or not. Mind you, there are hundreds of Dorans and Rooneys in Liverpool. Some are related, some aren't.

In any case, why isn't he playing for the Republic? It's not like he's going to win anything playing for England.

Coincidentally I heard another soccer/folkie connection the other day. I was told that Wayne Rooney's grandad was one of the piping Dorans .How true this is I have no idea.

This story (Terry having Harry Cox as his great granddad) appeared on Terry's Wikipedia site some time ago, but then disappeared soon after. Looking at Harry Cox's family history in the Topic CD booklet, it seems to be an unlikely family connection.

Maybe for England football (soccer) fans ? John Terry is in the team and did a Tiger Woods

What songs would Harry have sung for his wayward Great Grandson ?.. I'd have told him to keep that Long Peggin' Awl in his shorts
