Great festival! So many highlights but particularly loved The Young'Uns!! Never laughed so much in all my life and their singing was superb!

I came for the day on Monday because my son was a sound techie all wkend in the Sabrina tent. (He was the ginger dreaded chap who sorted out Chuck's sound probs yesterday). I heard a lot of mutterings about not enough singarounds. I sat in on one in the pavilion, I didn't get a chance to sing,   it was far too short and didn't get around the room. The 3 young lads running it got bored or had a gig to go to maybe, but the room was empty all afternoon after they left. Also many people said the volume from the main tent had been interfering with other tents and attempted singarounds over the wkend, so much so that they had to be stopped. I got the general impression that the trad folkies are being squeezed out in favour of the young and those who like loud booming music. Also there were very few familiar faces, when I was wandering around.
Sal
{i also saw a caterer selling lemonade at £2 a cup and it WASN'T freshly squeezed!!}

Just getting over Shrewsbury. Brilliant. Highlights for me were Chuck Brodsky, Kristina Olsen, John Otway & Wild Willie Barrett and new comer Lucy Ward.

The archived material from past webcasts can be downloaded to realplayer in mp4 format, then presumably can be converted into a format suitable for burning to dvd.

The RS/LK set was truly magical, I recorded the sound off line - the video stream would not download, but some fancy software may have done the trick. I hope that the set is made available on the Shrewsbury site later - this may be from a different feed without the distortion on vocals during the first few songs.

Hi BWM...Hope you enjoyed your trip to the suburbs of Boston :-)
Shrewsbury has archived material from past webcasts on it's site (Better quality than the "live" webcasts too). they also have their own YouTube channel, so hopefully something will pop up at a later date.

Just watched Richard Shindell & Lucy Kaplansky on the webcast - they were wonderful, some overloading problems on the sound for a while but very good once they sorted it out. Nothing over 15khz though - limited bandwidth I suppose??

Can anyone advise what 'in town' performances are on this weekend - also any info on pub sessions and sings.

We'll be in Shrewsbury from Saturday night until Tuesday, but not at the festival.

Ta,

John

I'm also interested in the pub sessions, although for the full weekend.

We're not 'doing' the festival this year although we'll likely be in town for most of the time. Any information on sessions, performances, dance displays in town will be v useful.

Ta,

JJ

Seconded - they are great fun!

I'll be there, as a steward and getting to as many concerts and workshops as I can.

It will be my third SFF, and I think it's my favourite festival. Particularly looking forward to seeing Bellowhead, but hope to say goodbye to the current line up of Kerfuffle in style.

Dear All,

The live webcasts last year were a resounding success in that I know people coming over from the US and local non-folkie friends all so impressed with what they saw last year they have already bought tickets to this years Shrewsbury Folk Festival.

Am now hoping that Newport Folk Festival, RI, will copy SFF and do live webcast this year as they only did live audio cast/online chat last year.

In excited anticipation,
Effie

ps: imho both the above knock spots of the BBC CambridgeFF coverage because they are real time every day/evening.

'Or you could see the festival for nothing! We will be doing the LIVE webcast again this year from our main stage'

Cracking idea if you live in Mexico or Canada, but no substitute for being there!! I am sure I would feel a bit daft wearing a stewards tabard in front of a computor screen :)

Can't wait for August.

Would love to bring the band next year by the way.

Hello Joe....you are so right Mr Shindell is an absolute treasure and "Are You Happy Now" is my favourite track too.

Just a gentle reminder, the 1st of april is approaching fast and your opportunity to buy tickets at a reduced rate will be just a memory...

Or you could see the festival for nothing! We will be doing the LIVE webcast again this year from our main stage. This was a real success last year with messages coming back from Mexico, Canada, Spain, the USA, Norway, Australia and, in fact, most parts of the world, including Wigan. Access is free, so you have no excuse to miss the festival.

All the Best

Alan

I understand the Beginners / Improvers / not bad at all sessions are to be 're-modelled' a bit. Can't rate them highly enough. We B / I / nba people just need more opportunities to play together.

Can I give my review? the Dervish concert will include some very special guests, some very big names from the folk world. Dervish are doing two such concerts this year, after their huge success at Celtic Connections, we are not saying who ......because surprises are all part of ther Shrewsbury experience.

treewind: we do very occassionally include a picture from the previous year in our flyer (Dog Rose last year)and as Pig Dyke are so attractive we couldn't resist the one we included. You will be coming back I'm sure.

Tam in Gloucester: Cresby you are such mischeivous boy. Get a life.

Anyway we have the best SFF in prospect, I'm sure the Afro Celts concert will be exceptional, but look out for Chuck Brodsky and Adrienne Young they will make a major impact this year.

All the Best

Alan

I understand that this is not the first Shrewsbury FF. I understand this because I have been 3 times already. Review seemed that best choice and people can go on the web site and see and hear some of the guests.

Dancing may well be better elsewhere. I prefer Whitby for sessions but I think SFF tops the poll for lots of exciting traditional based music and value for money.

I suspect this will provoke a 'discussion' about what on earth 'traditional based music' might be but it's as good a definition as I can manage

Best wishes
