From: GUEST,Francis Ward
Date: 18 Jan 17 - 08:15 PM

I have been asked by a couple who are due to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary if I have an Irish song which includes a line about the wife saying it would be a good idea if the husband could wear the suit they got married in??? He had it on a cd in his car but his car was broken into and the CDs were stolen? Any help tracking this down please? Thank You

Oh gosh.......sorry this one is over! Just popped in and was interested in this thread and lo and behold it's been resolved!

Just wanted to comment (for future reference?) I also love, "WHEN I GROW TOO OLD TO DREAM" (quite beautiful) and would think that the classic, "ALWAYS" would, er...uh...always be appropriate.

Can't remember who recorded it, but "Look At Us" - that's a good one too.

"WHEN YOUR HAIR HAS TURNED TO SILVER"
"AS TIME GOES BY"
"THE VOWS GO UNBROKEN"
"WHEN YOU WERE SWEET SIXTEEN"
"Through The Years" (Kenny Rogers)

Well, thanks all for your input. She got whatever she wanted & so I sang Joe Heaney's version of "RED IS THE ROSE" not so in keeping with the party but she's the host. Hi, Lynn; nice to see you here, you do a great job on "Lovely Agnes" & it's nice but I don't know it, I'll have to steal it from you along with your version of "YELLOW GALS/Doddle Let Me Go". Again thanks for all the input & response. Barry

Hi, Barry,

I can hear your bodhran from here.

How about Sally Rogers' song "LOVELY AGNES"? You've heard me sing it often enough! (I think Tom's getting tired of it.)

Re: the Anniversary Waltz

How about these words --

"We danced, and we danced on the night we were wed, We danced and we danced, cuz the room had no bed."

Why not write your own or give me a famous tune (maybe something popular 50 years ago or favourite to the couple) and I'll write some words for you to sing. Reply to Lynda; nzwaw@ihug.co.nz There's no charge of course, it will be my pleasure.

Two traditional tunes that never fail to moisten the eye at such events... BELIEVE ME IF ALL THOSE ENDEARING YOUNG CHARMS and WHEN I GROW TOO OLD TO DREAM. Everyone will know the lyrics, too, so they'll sing along with you to honour the 'bride and groom'!

Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: THE ANNIVERSARY SONG (Jolson/Chaplin
From: John in Brisbane
Date: 06 Aug 99 - 12:03 AM

Barry, here is the tune for the Anniversary Song, which I have pitched in Dm.

THE ANNIVERSARY SONG
Words by Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin, ©1946.
Music adapted by Chaplin from "Waves of the Danube" by Ion Ivanovici, ©1880.
As recorded by Al Jolson, 1946; featured in "The Jolson Story."

1. Oh how we danced on the night we were wed!
We vowed our true love though a word wasn't said.
The world was in bloom; there were stars in the skies,
Except for the few that were there in your eyes.

CHORUS: Dear, as I held you close in my arms,
Angels were singing a hymn to your charms,
Two hearts gently beating, murmuring low:
"Darling I love you so!"

2 The night seemed to fade into blossoming dawn.
The sun shone anew but the dance lingered on.
Could we but recall that sweet moment sublime,
We'd find that our love is unaltered by time.

Darling, I love you so!

Regards, John.

From: Song 'n Food

Is The Girl in the Red Velvet Dress in the DT? I heard it done by the Rude girls. Also, if it's a dancing crowd the round

I've been waiting all th3e day through just to see the stars in your eyes

My love, come dance with me now, see how the evening flies And as you sleep, my dear, know that I'll be near

To Hold you when you ariiise

It's in the Saul Roundsman Webber book of rounds and is named after a woman, perhaps with an A name. I wish I'd thought of this. We just celebrated my parents 50th last weekend.

Subject: Lyr Add: ONE FRIEND (Dan Seals)^^
From: Bugsy
Date: 05 Aug 99 - 10:31 PM

It's not Irish but Dan Seals' "ONE FRIEND" is a great song for the occassion, (Ask my wife of 30 years)

It's on his new album "In a quiet room" All acoustic versions of his past hits - great stuff!

Words Follow:

I always thought you were the best, I guess I always will
I always thought that we were blessed, I feel that way still
Sometimes we took the hard road, but we always saw it through
If I had only one friend left I'd want it to be you.

Sometimes the world was on our side, sometimes it wasn't fair
Sometimes it gave a helping hand, sometimes we didn't care
'cause when we were together you made the dreams come true
If I had only one friend left, I'd want it to be you.

Someone to understand me, who knows me inside out
Who helps keep me together and believes without a doubt
That I can move a mountain, someone to tell it too.
If I had only one friend left I'd want it to be you.

Hope it's of some use

Bugsy

Also not Irish, but my favorite anniversary songs, is Randy Travis' "FOREVER AND EVER AMEN." Great love lyrics.

There is a wonderful Irish tune in my head somewhere. I'll try to dredge it out this afternoon.

The "Happy Friendship" version in the DT is from Greig. You may find it by looking at Happy Roun' the Ingles Bleezin' under "H" in the index above. (Nice new feature, Max!) Not a very complete version, but there you are.

Mick Bracken's song looks to me like a version of the Scottish song "Happy Friendship" which Willy Scott, the Scots shepherd, used to sing wonderfully well. We thank you for that text, Mick! Caroline and I have a truncated version which I learned from Paul Clayton, who had it from his family (grandfather?) in New Bedford, Massachusetts. In fact, we sang it at BBC's party for Bill Sables last weekend.

For anniversaries, we often sing Bruce (Utah) Phillips' "HYMN SONG." Seems appropriate, with words like:

I believe if I lived my life again
I'd still be here with you.

Sandy

This isn't a song, but a good slightly off-colour toast I once made at a 50th wedding anniversary (the original source was Ronnie Hawkins, the Canadian rockabilly singer).
"I'm [He's] not as good as he once was, but he's as good once as he ever was."
They all got a big kick out of it. Of course, it depends on the crowd!!!!

Garnet Rogers has a song about long-term love & commitment that used to kill me until I found my sweetheart. It's called "Stars in Their Crown" & is on his recording, Small Victories.

..sorry for the thread creep, but I've been trying to find the appropriate symbol for an institution's 75th anniversary. As far as I can see, the ones used for weddings don't go up that high. Gold for 50; Diamond for 60 etc.
Any florists, greetings cards experts, out there with any ideas?

Subject: Lyr Add: HAPPY ARE WE ALL TOGETHER^^
From: Brakn
Date: 05 Aug 99 - 03:49 AM

Do you know this one. I was told it's Irish though I've only just come across it. A great one for family gatherings.
regards Mick Bracken

HAPPY ARE WE ALL TOGETHER

Round this bright and social table
Seated with a merry crew
Not one on earth could be more happy
Than the times I've spent with you

Chorus
Happy are we all together
Happy are we one and all
May we lead a life of leisure
And may we rise and never fall

Many's the time we've left our stations
Troubles we did have but few
And earthly pride was all sensation
Love was made for me and you

Friendship brought us all together
Friendship makes our hearts unite
And friendship leads a life of pleasure
'Twas friendship brought us here tonight

Barry, I posted THE GOLDEN JUBILEE tune about two weeks ago, and the lyrics have been added. For that age group, I believe that the sentiments in Al Jolson's 'THE ANNIVERSARY SONG' takes some beating - Ivanovici's melody helps a tad as well. Regards, John

Subject: Lyr Add: GOLDEN YEARS (Lee Ruth)
From: catspaw49
Date: 05 Aug 99 - 02:12 AM

Hey Barry---It's not Irish, but "50 Golden Years" by Lee Ruth is just beautiful....great tune/great lyrics. It's on the Folk-Legacy Golden Ring Reunion album "For All the Good People" with Sandy and Caroline, Ed Trickett, Dave Para, Cathy Barton, and Harry Tuft.........You're probably familiar with it anyway, but I thought it was worth a mention. Helluva' an album ain't it?

Spaw

(from Joe Offer) Here are the Folk-Legacy notes for this song:

GOLDEN YEARS

(Lee Ruth)
Happy Hollow Songs, 1988.

Dave Para: guitar, lead vocal; Ed Trickett: piano, vocal;
Additional chorus vocals:

Cathy Barton, Caroline Paton, Sandy Paton, Harry Tuft

Lee Ruth has been playing and teaching music in central Missouri for many years, and several players owe some of their first guitar and banjo chords to him, Cathy and I among them. Lee plays guitar with wonderful invention and versatility and sings with a warm, honest voice. His album, Happy Hollow Songs (available from Lee at Happy Hollow Farm, Route 1, Box 228A, Jamestown, MO 65046), is full of the loving care and artistry for which his friends know him.

Lee wrote this song for his parents' 50th anniversary in 1988. I rewrote some of the lyrics for my parents' anniversary, but I sing Lee's words here. If you should want to rewrite them for someone you know, I'm sure Lee would think that was great.

(Dave Para)

They were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1938.

Though times were hard and war was near, their life together would not wait.

And it took them an even dozen years to fill the house with kids.

If they ever had regrets, they kept them hid.

Golden years, golden years,
After fifty years, they're still romancing, still go dancing,
Dance the night away.
Golden years golden years
What a blessing to be love for fifty golden years.

Hard work and overtime, Mama worked as hard as Dad
To keep the house in order and the kids all clothed and fed.
And then one day they looked around, the kids were grown and gone.
It was their turn to do some moving on.

From Texas to Alaska, they heard the highway's call.
And it's northward in the springtime and southward in the fall.
And I'm always glad to see them every time they're passing through
On their way from someplace old to someplace new.

Well, I bet it's been ten thousand days I've enjoyed their company,
And it's strange to think that it's come down to one, or two or three,
Or Five, or ten, or twenty times I'll see them on this earth.
So, here's a song to thank them for my birth.
