Mike. As new him as when I was around thirteen. Used to go out with my sister. Saying was saddened to hear of his death is an understatement. He was my guitar hero, friend and I regarded him as my brother. He was the influence that kick started my guitar playing. I know it's late to post now. I only just stumbled across this. You've always been in my thoughts mike cand I too love bananas. R. I. P.

The entire Greasy Truckers set is now available for the first time ever on an expanded CD boxset which I've yet to hear. According to Deke: it [Spunk Rock] was 22 minutes on the record but when it faded in we had already been goig for about ten. Sadly the CD doesn't reinstate those lost ten minutes but you do get Many Are Called.., an early version of Bananas, and, of course, Romain - see HERE for more.

Likewise expanded with hitheto unheard material is the recent re-issue of Live at the Padget Rooms, Penarth by the same line-up recorded two months after the Greasy Truckers concert. Well worth seeking out - the version of Spunk Rock is every bit as good as the one on Greasy Truckers, to which it adds a minute!

Anyone interested in the legacy of Micky Jones should also check out The Flying Pigs - traditional pub rock at its finest!

That's sad. I saw Man in the late 1970s - they were a fine band ans MJ a great player. Nice to see an old OGWT clip of 'Day and Night' on one of the BBC4 retro shows recently.

I first saw Micky with his early Band the Bystanders in about 1965 in the Ritz Ballroom in Skewen near Swansea. Not only was Micky a fantastic guitarist he was also a wonderful harmony vocalist with a falsetto. It seems a bit unlikely in hindsight but he could sing Four Seasons as well as Beachboys songs which were far removed from his songs with the brilliant MAN.

One of my all time favourite bands. Spunk Rock from the Greasy Truckers Party at The Roundhouse (which I attended) must be the finest example of live guitar interplay ever recorded. A 25 minute tapestry of guitar magic woven around a pounding heartbeat bass line and featuring pure pschedelic telepathy Micky's SG and Dekes Telecaster. Phew...

Rest in peace Micky and thanks for all the pleasure you gave us.

To quote from Deke Leonard:

There's something I ought to get out of the way. It's about Jones and me. My musical soul requires that I maintain the conceit that, as guitar players, we are equals, even though, if the truth was told, I am not fit to lick his boots. I have played with Jones for nigh on 25 years and I still don't know what he's going to do next.

Daily he blows my mind. And the worst thing is that I know that he knows that I know that he's better than me. I know this. He knows this. Occasionally, he reminds me of the fact. He sometimes cushions the blow by pointing out that we have different strengths, that he isn't much cop at writing lyrics, but this is freezing cold comfort in the long dark watches of the night. The upshot is that I will have to content myself with being the second-best guitarist in the world.

Deke Leonard - from Rhinos, Winos & Lunatics - The Legend of Man - A Rock 'n; Roll Band, Northdown Publishing, 1996, p.8

(Micky's the SG; Deke's the tele.)

Rest in peace, Micky. One of the very finest. The very angels must now look to their laurels.

Mickey Jones, legendary guitarist and singer with the Man Band, has died, aged 63, following a brain tumour. A bit off-topic, I know, but Man were my heroes when I lived in Swansea, and Mickey's fabulous musicianship was only one of many formative influences that led me to discovering the wonderful world of folk today. Diolch yn fawr, Mickey.
